What does the future hold for the NEC Classic Motor Show? 26 Oct 2016 (News)
Or, will the younger enthusiasts of today – those of us in our 20s, 30s and 40s, who are the ones that are currently, whether you like it or not, changing the focus away from fins and chrome towards a brave new world of ECUs and in-car electronics – going to be dribbling into our white beards over a pint of warm, flat beer, remembering the halcyon days of the Honda Civic-shaped Rover 400 and Mk 5 Escort? Will we see a Tesla Owners' Club at the classic motor show in 2048? -
Seat ecomotive congestion charge exempt 15 Feb 2008 (News)
With the Ibiza Ecomotive, for instance, the experts at Martorell have wrung every ounce of economy from the already efficient Ibiza 1.4 TDI (on which this newcomer is based) – indeed, that model is also exempt from the revised charge thanks to CO2 emissions of just 119 g/km. In Ecomotive trim new software is added to the engine ECU, while particulate emissions are further reduced thanks to the addition of a state-of-the-art Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Meanwhile, the gear ratios of the Ibiza Ecomotive’s five-speed manual gearbox are lengthened, making for both more relaxed cruising and improved economy. -
DISHONEST JOHN'S GUIDE TO SERVICE SCAMS 6 Oct 2001 (News)
The Loose Connector Con Often, all that will be wrong is that a connector plug has come loose or got some moisture inside it. Never ever admit to this, especially if it's the multipoint connector to the ECU. Always diagnose that the ECU needs replacing at a cost of £500 plus. The Lambda Laugh If the diagnostic interrogator and an emissions test isolate the exhaust Lambda sensor as the source of the problem and simple cleaning would cure it, instruct your fitters to replace it. -

Are future classics a thing of the past? 15 Jun 2016 (News)
They never cost their owners a penny to keep, so they were kept. We were sceptical, back in the 1990s, of ECUs and immobilisers. But time has shown us that, more often than not, cars so-equipped are generally reliable. That’s fine, because it means that I can still open the bonnet of any of my 1990s classics and know pretty much what’s going on under there. -

A specific motorsport ECU manages engine (power supply and ignition) and gearbox operations. It operates in conjunction with a special electrical wiring loom and may be combined with an optional data logging. Twingo Renaultsport R2’s engine has been designed to cover 2,500 kilometres of special stages between each service. -
Honest John's Motoring Agony Column 4 Apr 2015 (News)
The FIAT dealer reports that the diagnostics show nothing. We're planning to commission an independent test - assuming that the ECU it hasn't been wiped - as I understand that it may be able to show, for example, whether the source of the sudden acceleration that caused my wife's carpark crash was a sensor or the pedal itself. -
Used Van Buying Guide: Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2006-2013 25 Nov 2019 (News)
. Other niggles include check straps on the doors failing, sliding doors jamming and brake light switches failing - the latter confusing the ECU into thinking you’re braking when you’re not. There have also been a few recalls for fuel leaks. What to watch The oil filter within the engine of 2007 Sprinters can become blocked and this causes the engine oil to be expelled through the dipstick hole (even though the dipstick is in place) leaving the engine to seize. Sprinters have a bit of a reputation for rust, though it’s unfair and largely down to abuse from owners - and unlined load spaces. -

Thus the final instruction for a Glasgow-bound driver might be: ‘Aye, right… you’ve made it at last then, eh? Yer numpty.’ Further, the system regularly interrogates the car’s various ECU chips to keep abreast of its condition and report relevant facts to the driver at an appropriate time. So, for example, if the car undergoes routine maintenance and the wiper blades are changed, the system can identify and refer to the change when it next activates the automatic wipers. -
Used Van Buying Guide: Ford Transit 2006-2014 20 Nov 2019 (News)
We've heard of problems with belt cam 2.2 diesel engines belt tensioner failing at 1400 miles onwards. Rough idling is usually caused by the EGR valve sticking open. An ECU remap does not solve the problem. You can still drive the van but to fix it, remove and set to closed, blank off or replace. 2000-06 Transits need a service annually or every 15,000 as a minimum, newer Mark7s need more regular 10,000 services and using fully synthetic oil. -

Used Pick-Up Buying Guide: Mitsubishi L200 Series 4 (2006-2015) 27 Nov 2019 (News)
A 2.5-litre unit it boasted 134PS and 314Nm of torque in standard guise. Mitsubishi UK also offered it with a ‘piggy-back’ ECU that boosted power to 165PS. It was standard on the Animal trim and above but offered as an optional extra on the more utilitarian specification levels. Transmission choices are a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic; the latter had a driver selection for first and second gears and an overdrive, useful for those using the towing (up to 2.7 tonnes) or carrying capacity the L200 offers. All are four-wheel drive, Mitsubishi very proud of its Super Select 4WD system, which allows the driver to select on the move up to 62mph. -

NEW ENGINES AND TRIM FOR ALFA 159 RANGE 27 Aug 2009 (News)
This is achieved by monitoring and optimising engine parameters such as fuel measurement, injection timing and spark advance. Managed by a new ECU, it is possible to define the angle and times of valve overlap in order to generate airflow from the inlet manifold to the exhaust manifold and therefore activate the turbocharger very quickly. This new process allows for maximum exploitation of the turbocharger compared to conventional turbocharged petrol engines.
