  • An interesting drive home. 2 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Did anyone have an interesting drive home from work, yesterday? I did. Everything fine for the first couple of miles, dry day, sun shining, hardly any traffic, then it got interesting. I arrived at the back of a queue of about 6 cars doing 30 mph on a straight road.
  • Mondeo - Reving, smoke a new Solenoid 14 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Also, theres sometimes a smell of diesal inside the car as Im driving and I've noticed fuel smears on the road occasionally after parking. Ive booked it back in but they can't see it until 23rd - any tips on what to tell them - or how to stop them ripping me off?
  • Focus Tdci Running Problem 30 Jan 2005 (Forum)
2000/w focus 1.8 td di ghia, 89,000miles ,fsh ford only serviced 250 miles ago and fitted new battery leads . drives fine and then for no reason the diesel glow plug light flashes and the car stalls ,but rev counter stays where it is ,stuck in limbo!this happens at lower speeds 30mph ish restarts fine and drives off and does the same thing again usually a mile or so down road. have changed fuel filter and it has made no difference ,yet it will do 70 miles or so without a problem thinking the auction the car came from had put petrol in tank(only a 1/4 tank in car when problems started)i filled it up with diesel to full and this has inproved things but it still breaking down every now and then ,it usually jerks before it dies . i drove the car at 70mph the other day and it went fine but every now and then it popped like some rough fuel was going through but it didnt stall or the light stayed out any ideas ,was her indoors xmas present and she wont drive it anymore!!!
  • Speeding (mostly excl cameras) XXV 26 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Hi All. I am currently an associate of the West Midlands ROSPA and I am really enjoying my driving since having regular drives with a Gold/Silver member and reading and applying Roadcraft. I now acknowledge and adhere to all speed limits (although still wander off by 2-3 mph here and there) where as before, I would probably have no major thoughts of doing well over the speed limit (e.g. 55 in a 40) if I thought it was 'safe' to do so.
  • Noisy 306 18 Nov 2004 (Forum)
I drive a V reg 306 1.8XS with 56K on the clock. Ever since I've had the car (18 months), there's been a couple of annoying problems: 1. There is a squeak from the front wheels (imagine a rusty bike wheel).
  • Pro-rata Car Insurance anywhere?? 25 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Old car was gonna be scrapped..God know why but I thought it far to good to scrap so invested a little time & money & a new second hand engine fitted later, got it running again. It is now MOT'd and ready to get tax in order to drive/sell. I already have my own car i drive daily. If I add this 2nd car to my current insurance - is possible for 30 days at a time up to maximum of 90. Fine - but I am told I cannot tax the car as confirmation of insurance letter is not enough - post office need a Certificate of insurance - which I won't be getting as it's only a 30 day added vehicle.
  • Old VW Polo intermittant power loss 24 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Several signs of age have manifested recently (in the last year), but the major pain is an intermittant loss of power which I\'ve noticed when motorway driving (although it could be happening at other times), which is reducing the car\'s top speed to about 50 mph even with the accelerator floored. This can persist for some time, but alternately flooring and releasing the accelerator pedal (still while driving) seems to fix it.
  • Pleasure or danger ? 13 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Whilst I don't drive just for pleasure there have been occasions when on a lovely day and an clear/open road I've truly enjoyed driving. I am conscious, however, that some people seem to derive great pleasure from pushing their cars to the absolute limit whether it be in terms of pure speed, handling or whatever.
  • Reporting careless/Dangerous driving 10 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Is there a procedure for reporting dangerous driving where there has been no accident? The incident: Three lane road approaching a roundabout. Left lane is left turn only, middle ahead only, right lane ahead or right turn. In rush hour middle and outer lane are queuing, left hand lane is almost empty.
  • Vectra Engine Management 25 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Anyway, I felt I needed to drain half a litre to feel more comfortable with the level (it's above max) - all well and good till I found I needed a torx bit to take the sump plug out (why oh why!!!!) - anyway, I've had to drive 50 miles this morning to get to work, I'll try and source a torx bit today, then drive 50 miles home and hopefully sort the problem this evening. Now to my engine management light problem (the two may be related?)
  • Insurance 17 Mar 2003 (Forum)
However, I have a problem with claiming my NCD because my insurers, after 11 months, still haven't issued me with a full policy. Nor have I yet had a renewal notice from them. I've been driving by getting 30-day cover notes from the broker who sold me the policy. How can I force them to acknowledge that I bought a policy from them nearly a year ago and have been driving claim free since?
  • Trip to the skidpan 11 Feb 2003 (Forum)
We went to the skidpan on Saturday. National Driving Centre in Croydon (found easily by web search). Not a particularly glamorous location, but an interesting, well-run and fun experience. We drove a front drive Primera with ABS switched on and off and a rear drive Sierra without ABS.
  • Rear Foglight Use and Abuse 19 Nov 2002 (Forum)
I've always tended to be pretty sparing in my use of these lights - they're often pretty dazzling when the fog's not too thick, and can make it hard to pick out brake lights ahead (particularly when only one's working!). Also, when driving in busy 'convoy' traffic, the sudden uncovering of a fog lamp a few cars ahead can be mistaken for brake lights, and I've often seen 'concertina' braking occur for this reason. FWIW, I tend to use the rear fogs only when I'm driving alone or the back marker in a traffic stream and switch them off when I see someone's tagged on behind.
  • Third World Driving ... 26 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Here's what I have to put up with on the roads... What should have been a normal drive back from school for a group of Kimberley pupils in the Northern Cape turned into a nightmare when traffic officials stopped their taxi - into which all 33 of them had been squashed. The children, aged between 6 and 13, were crammed into their private 16-seater taxi along with the driver and his helper on Monday.
  • Reasonable Consideration 17 Feb 2002 (Forum)
t ?Driving without Due Care and Attention? but was deliberate in his actions and, whilst unsocial, it was not dangerous. On another thread Dwight Van Driver said that there was an offence of ?driving a vehicle without reasonable consideration for other people using the road.?
  • Excessive tyre wear - Alfa 166 12 Dec 2001 (Forum)
The local dealership recently checked the tracking but the variance allowed by Alfa is so great that it is almost meaningless. The guy at the garage did say that the tyre wear is as a result of motorway driving - apparently the downward pressure on the car is such that the tyres wear excessively. Not sure how true this is but I do do a fair bit of m'way driving in my annual mileage of 30k +.
  • Timing belts -- another general query 25 Oct 2001 (Forum)
The other thing is why are the belts (appaently) so puny they don't last very long on engines which otherwise do high mileages on their other parts? My Harley Davidson Evo has a drive belt good enough to send a lot of heavy horses to the rear wheel. Unlike a timing belt which is more driven than driving (!) The HD belt drive is known as the best in the business -- I have never heard of a belt failure on huge mileage engines, yet the thing is out in the weather and does all the work.
  • Volkswagen Windsreens 13 Feb 2001 (Forum)
They in no way resemble large stone chips I have received, that have resulted in the need for new screens on previous cars. In an estimated 750,000 miles of driving a variety of other makes ? Ford, Peugeot, Mitsubishi, I have had about three or four windscreens replaced. In 25,000 miles of Volkswagen driving, I have needed four. Statistically, I have not been unlucky.

  • Honda Jazz - CVT Fluid 7 Jun 2025 (Forum)
Just acquired a 54 registered Jazz CVT for newly qualified daughter to get some driving experience in. It’s got a slight judder when taking up drive, that I’d like to cure/diminish. Consensus is that a fluid change would be the first port of call. The level is OK on the transmission dipstick, but the fluid is more an engine oil colour than the red I’d expect.
