  • RIP Diesel Hatchback 20 Jun 2020 (Forum)
The 205 1.8D - Well known for doing huge mileages, capable of over 50mpg yet rode as well as a luxury saloon. Citroen AX Diesel - A hoot to drive yet rode really well and could do 70mpg no bother. Shame they never built a turbocharged version. Peugeot 306 Dturbo - The first diesel hot hatch. These were a hoot to drive yet comfy and great on fuel.

I’ve always liked hot hatches, ask me what my favourite car is at almost any point in my life and a fun to drive yet useful family hot hatch of some sort would pop to mind immediately. Peugeot 306 GTi-6, Citroen ZX Volcane, Renault 19 16v, Renault Clio 16v, Honda Civic Type R EP3, Peugeot 205 GTi, Metro GTi were all a hoot on a twisty B road yet affordable to ordinary folks like me. They weren’t over endowed with too much power, they didn’t come with feel sapping electric steering racks that sucked the fun out of driving.
  • Peugeot 208 2015 - Small Claims Court to reject car? 28 Jul 2023 (Forum)
They asked me to find out what the problem was and they'd foot the bill. I got it checked via an independent Pug/Citroen specialist and their diagnosis was a failing EPS system, about £2500 all in using genuine parts. Clearly, this was why it was traded in. My bad. It seemed like a good one. The dealer has been informed (this was a trial involving using a mobile phone borrowed from a friend) and wants to repair the car.
  • Car for a vicar and his family! 5 Jun 2019 (Forum)
My brother in law, a Church of England Priest, approached me last week to offer some advice on his next car. My sister is pestering him to replace their current vehicle, a 2006 Citroen Xsara Picasso 1.6 petrol with 105k miles. It is starting to need more regular maintenance- nothing out of the ordinary, for example recently a new exhaust. My sister's concern is that it will start to become unreliable, and as their only car, in daily use, this would be  a problem.
  • Ford Europe Update 16 Apr 2019 (Forum)
Tourneo Courier - van based MPV now officially given a place in the UK market since January, dealers able to offer best finance deals on the market for this car type (shame honest John fails to provide a road test and review in the car section of his website). Dealer expects to sell plenty more on motability with Citroen/Peugeot/Vauxhall pushing up their van Based MPV prices on the Berlingo / Rifter / Combo Life Mustang - sales and enthusiasm starting to slow New Focus - Petrol DPF a real headache for some customers who only do short runs, has had to buy 2 back and down size the customers into Fiesta Actives.
  • Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi Zetec 2007 (56) - Focus 1.8 TDCi turbo woes 14 Sep 2011 (Forum)
Having said that, I have taken a back seat with my current car and haven't done any major work on it (because I've never needed to). I've owned Rover 200s and a citroen zx in the past (for my sins) so I've spent a fair bit of time tinkering under the bonnets of those, but as far as the guts of a Focus goes I've got very little experience. I have a 1.8 56-plate TDCi Zetec with about 83,000 on the clock (I've owned it since 32,000) and a few months ago I lost boost from the turbo.
  • Celebrating 40 years of the 18-22 series Wedge 27 Mar 2015 (Forum)
During 1977, this very magazine rated the six-cylinder 2200 HLS as the best car it had tested that year, although this was partly the slightly embarrassing result of an admirably obtuse scoring system used by the mag at the time. Nevertheless, the Princess was an entirely credible rival to the recently released Citroen CX and made Ford’s Granada look like a throwback. Its strengths were cabin space, ride comfort, interior fittings, road holding and refinement. Oh, and its Tomorrow’s World wedginess.
  • Saab - Time running out to buy one of the last 21 Mar 2013 (Forum)
New 1 hour 24 min ago Shame that SAAB went under, they have the Swedish cool Volvo could never have. Would prefer to see Renault or Peugeot (I like Citroen) go under rather than SAAB, but who knows, maybe now they are in bed with GM they could be next! reply Flag as offensive What used family car? Too much choice is a curse.. 29 Oct 2020 (Forum)
    ·         Safety - Five star EURO NCAP ·         Style – This will be used for both family as well as business occasionally, so something that looks good (even sporty) is important i.e. not a Citroen Berlingo! ·         Longevity – I’d like to make the next car the one we drive for the next 8-10yrs as I’m not a fan of changing and switching regularly.
  • Accessible Classic: The Fantastic, Forgotten Citro 5 Apr 2015 (Forum)
http://www.petrolicious.com/citroen-gs-1220-pallas?    Love the non cancelling indicators, just like my Dyane in the 1980s. Shame car design has moved backwards compared with this. 2.5 million sold tells you quirky does sell.
  • Toyota Verso impressions and ruminations 10 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Hard to convey the tactile impression of driving the thing, but I pushed it as hard as I would the Volvo along a twisty and damp B road and it inspired great confidence. Ride quality I'd describe as solid - not wafty like a Citroen but not jiggly or bouncy either. I liked it very much. 2.2 140 diesel engine is excellent. Recognizably dieselly at low speeds and with a hard-edged note when accelerating - very similar to the S-Max and C4 Picasso in this respect - but never unpleasant and with plenty of power in store.

    – though posts about specific car-related issues are fairly self-limiting (I might read one about Citroens but I wouldn’t probably bother with one about rear flange-sprockets on a twin overhead cam gyratory system). I have opinions about motoring related issues too. I also know that not every post I do make is the epitome of wisdom or wit, and I try never to post just for the sake of it.
  • Reborn classics - your choices? 5 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Alvis TE21 - if I had to explain, you wouldn't understand, so here goes. Simply the definitive luxury coupé, short of a David Brown Aston. If only it was prettier... Citroen DS - still one of the most beautiful cars EVER. This time, sort out the six-pot, maybe even RWD?! Flame war steps up again! Safari version would be, as the original is, fantastic. Volvo Amazon - solid, respectable, notably pretty, good to drive, reliable as Toyota's CEO's Swiss watch.
  • The best first wheels 23 Jan 2021 (Forum)
Any more and it’s going to be too valuable to stand all those learning curve dings and bashes but any cheaper and you’re delving into true bangernomics where only those with knowledge of the dark art should lurk with their kids first cars. Citroen C1 1.0/Peugeot 107/Toyota Aygo 1.0 - Tiny 3cyl Daihatsu engine and costs buttons to run. Resists rot well and is as cheap as it gets for insurance. Simple and reliable yet fun to drive. A good example is easy to find at this money.
  • Driving/cars in Australia and New Zealand 18 Mar 2014 (Forum)
I spotted a Morris Marina van, Lancia Thema, Escort MK2, Cortina MK2, two late Rover SD1, Rover 600, two Citroen BX, a 1960s Mercedes saloon and numerous Japanese cars c.25 years or more old. These included Subaru Legacy, Toyota Carina (Caldina), MK2/4 Honda Civic, 1980s Accord. BMWs are very rare ( expensive new, a 520i starts at £42,000) although I saw a couple of E30 3-series and a few E34 5-series.
  • New Car Time - Replacing Nissan Primera P11-144 6 Dec 2013 (Forum)
The car Im most interested in though is the VW Passat, but I think for the CR Engine, and the kind of car I want, Im looking probably £6k to £8k - would have to be 2008+ and a lot of them have quite hgh mileages compared to the petrol equivalent. I've thought about other ones such as, Renault Laguna 2.0 Petrol, Citroen C5 1.8 VTR, Nissan Qashcai, Jaguar -Type 2.5 V6, Nissan 350Z 3.5 V6, but the MPG, CO2, are poor on those last two (understandably) and the others are really lacklustre for MPG and CO2. Qashcai 1.5 Diesel and 1.6 Petrol appear slow, but Qashcais in general appear to be quite expensive for what they are.
  • New car shortlist - who's going to help? 19 Jul 2007 (Forum)
I've tried a Jetta 2.0 TDI with DSG - very pronounced turbo lag and much more so than the A3 or Octavia. Dismissed: Renault Scenic and Citroen Picasso - too wallowy round corners, and the Scenic I tried had trim rattling or falling off at only 7,000 miles. Mazda 5 and 6 - road tests all say how noisy they are and noise is something I'm trying to escape from!

Not a fan of keycards with buttons though - I argue a key is a smaller less obtrusive thing to have in your pocket and the insertion place is difficult to see, though accept were it keyless it would make sense. Citroen C4 - best looking car I saw. Easily. Lovely bluey-silvery colour highlighted it to the degree I actually went back for the key to see it. Spacious but was the only one I felt cocooned in, which I liked.
  • Recommend Me a Car 4 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Good/adjustable driving position Can be diesel or petrol, Not really bothered about Insurance Group (25 yo, 4yrs NCB) Preferably Air Conditioned Leather trimmed steering wheel, Remote central locking electric front windows decent seats, preferably 'sports' but decent will do I really like the steering wheel mounted controls in the laguna Clutch foot rest Not bothered about things like alloys, although I don't dislike them, Would consider any make-looks/image not a very high concern to me. I like all sorts of cars-even quirky Citroens. A heated front windscreen'd be good. So not an exacting list of requirements then! I already know a lot about various cars, but it's the details you can't easily get from a spec sheet that I value the back roomer's help for-things like how good is the clutch, are the brakes decent, steering wheel mounted controls for stereo etc.
  • Une carte postale 1 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Not for them the ubiquitous German- or Japanese-box, with indefinite curves & generally pleasing on the eye. Recall for a moment, if you will, pre-war Citroens with their strange boxy shape & their intruiging yet tempting aerodynamic shape. Nothing changes. The roads are crammed full of such delights as the new Megane. Allegedly Europe's most popular car, it is clear that most of them are in La Belle France.
