Good mid-sized auto diesel 11 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Rover 75 1.8 Manual 36.2mpg, 1.8 Auto 30.1 - admittedly petrol but equally bad effect on the derv engine, there must be some which are much better than this. So basically what is a good mid sized diesel auto with reasonable fuel consumption? BMW not really in price range, likewise Merc. Quite like a diesel Skoda Octavia Auto I was in as a taxi but perhaps a bit better than that? I'm thinking of either looking brand new or perhaps up to a year old (certainly worthwhile with the repmobiles from trade-sales.co.uk) but *not* a Vauxhall. -
the most INTERESTING sub-group 10 car? 8 Jan 2003 (Forum)
What is the best car upto around 10k? A few examples I thought of were as follows: Ford Puma 1.4/1.7 BMW 316i Sport Compact (1998/9) New MINI One/Cooper possibly New Ford Fiesta 1.4 A/C Zetec 3dr VW Lupo GTI 1.6/1.4 Sport Audi A3 1.6 Sport Renault Megane coupe or Clio? Basically I wouldnt mind something a bit exclusive and that does 0-60mph in around 10 seconds or less Any ideas? -
South African imports - strike looms! 27 Aug 2002 (Forum)
BMW, Merc and VW are affected. Thousands of motor industry workers are protesting wage offers during a one-day strike on Monday. The strike coincides with the opening of the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg. -
Would you do the job? 16 Apr 2002 (Forum)
There was so little traffic that it didn't make a lot of difference anyway. The driver of a sliver BMW 3 series was obviously too important to slow down so he carried on in the outside line to within about 50 yards of the crash site, and then had to swerve to avoid a policeman who was trying to sort out the mess. -
Obscure motoring offence 7 Apr 2002 (Forum)
But Anita Addison, prosecuting, told magistrates at Sudbury, Suffolk, that the Crown was withdrawing the charge. "Dyer, 23, of Westgate Road, Newcastle, lent James Leech his BMW X5 on August 4 last year. But when police stopped Leech in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, he could not produce an insurance certificate, and was not insured." So before you lend your car to a friend, you'd better get them to show you their insurance certificate. -
Advice on tyre alignment 2 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Posted a week ago or so re: badly wearing tyre. I got onto BMW to see if there was a common problem and they said no and I should have something called a KDS test (Optical Alignment test where they put a camera on each wheel). Now the charge for this is a p1*$ taking £140. -
Oil Type - GTI Teenagers 22 Jun 2001 (Forum)
One of the (many) idiots of which I am one on the Golf GTI web-sites aplenty has asked whether 0W-40 oil is a good bet for his Golf as he's heard a BMW ran for many hundreds of thousands of miles on it with no wear. I said, politely, "baloney mate." I suggested the, recommended, 20W-50 or 10W-40 and semi-synthetic. Can anyone advise? Surely 0W-40 would be too thin at the temperatures experienced in the UK? -
Audi A6 - any comments? 31 May 2001 (Forum)
I've read a lot about the inferiority of the Audi in the ride & handling department over other cars with a similar market (e.g. BMW etc), does anyone out there have any first hand comments? Obviously I'm going to try one for myself, but there's no substitute for long term experience! I do about 25,000 miles a year, a 50-50 mix of cross-country & motorway including long continental trips. -
Mazda Xedos 6 - Jerky drivetrain 28 Mar 2001 (Forum)
The Mazda garage says the car is fine and there's no fault. However, it is no way near as fluid as driving, say a BMW 318is Coupe (my old car), in the same conditions. Anyone have any ideas or any experience or how to cure this? Any suggestions would be much appreciated. -
Monthly Running costs for Used Cars 29 Nov 2000 (Forum)
My wife's Renault Megane (1.6RT 5dr) has just reached 3 yrs old and has cost £310 per month for 6k miles/yr. I'm contemplating a used Audi / BMW / Merc but want to do my sums before even looking around forecourts or small ads - but where can I get the figures? -
BMW X5 E53 SUV (2000 - 2007) - Advice needed re: used vehicle 18 Jul 2009 (Forum)
To cut a long story short, I didn't have the most favourable experience in purchasing my used vehicle (delay in collection, problems with updates etc). However, these things happen. However, I had to call out BMW assist 4 days after getting the car due to a battery problem, and at this time I was notified of an issue with the car (don't really want to go into too much detail) that really should have been picked up before I bought it. -

Not yet sure - New Purchase 10 Mar 2021 (Forum)
Option one is a 2014 onwards Audi Q5, 2 litre diesel S-Line plus. Option two is a 2014 onwards BMW X3 likely 20D M sport. Option three is a 2016 onwards BMW x1 20D M Sport. My wife has an obsession with Audi's of which, I'm not the biggest fan however I don't mind the Q5, it's a lot slower than the X1 and X3 pushing 0-60 in 9 seconds, the X1 is the fastest by quite a bit to be honest and obviously had the facelift in the back-end of 2015 so I'd say it's a lot more with the times tech and interior looks wise. -
Worst and best makes of OLDER used cars? 10 Nov 2017 (Forum)
Some makes of car I would not touch with a bargepole are Renault, Mercedes, BMW, Land Rover or Audi. Renaults I know have always been a pile of poo, Mercedes fall to bits after 5 years and cost a fortune to do anything to them, BMW's I've heard have a habit of spontaneously combusting, Range Rovers I've seen three or four times suffer terminal engine and gearbox faults, and Audi are just plain expensive I think. -

Japanese versus the rest. 21 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Please....no personal attacks. I know full well that there's a certain appeal in BMW or Merc. ownership and we all drive what we want or can afford - no arguments there. I'm just observing that the 'Technical' list seems a bit lopsided and owners of Japanese vehicles might be feeling left out :-) Is it that we are still trying to support the British car industry? -
Recommend me a used car 1 Jun 2025 (Forum)
However it seems that used Volvos really aren't as cheap as they were when I purchased my V60! Also considering Audi, BMW, Mercedes - not sure about other brands as they seem to be underpowered (VW) or often butt ugly (Skoda). Open to hearing otherwise though! -
Any - Quick job 4 Jun 2024 (Forum)
As soon as the steering wheel is turned, it re-engages and corners in a remarkably spritely manner (stressing that I was driving like Miss Daisy’s driver). I didn’t get chance to play with the infotainment much, but it’s a R-R version of BMW’s system. The car starts at £330,000, but with options most will be at least £400,000. Looking forward to doing the return trip in it in a couple of weeks. -
Performance Family Car 24 Mar 2022 (Forum)
Hi All, As a young family of 4 we currently own a BMW 320i (E90) estate which is just big enough but getting rather old with increasing warning lights and general leaks etc and thus time shortly for an upgrade. Looking into options currently which fit the bill and would appreciate thoughts/feedback from the collective on the next purchase. -
Shifter design 7 Apr 2021 (Forum)
But in RHD Mercs having it on RHS makes no sense. Monostable shifter - like in Fiats and BMWs, again you can't see and figure out which mode it is in. This design allegdely caused few accidents as per internet. This is another design change which solves a non-existing problem.
