Recommend me a used car - Tigstopher

Hi,

Currently owner of a 64 plate Volvo V60 (D4 business edition), owned from 2017 onwards. It's now approaching 180K miles & starts having a few issues... hence me looking for a replacement.

Requirements:

- large enough to fit 4 people and boot space for suitcases and a dog

- enough torque for swift driving & comfortable for motorway cruising

- cheap to maintain (insurance group, road tax, fuel efficient)

- max budget 15K, but ideally below 14K, and up to 5 years old...?

Current car has been great - averaged 48mpg, zero road tax, spacious and a good engine with plenty of power. However it seems that used Volvos really aren't as cheap as they were when I purchased my V60! Also considering Audi, BMW, Mercedes - not sure about other brands as they seem to be underpowered (VW) or often butt ugly (Skoda). Open to hearing otherwise though!

What's your annual mileage and use pattern? Do you have a drive?

Yes to a driveway.

Use: approx. 12K miles a year - commute is only 20 miles / 40 round trip, but frequently go to London (~100 mile round trip) and about twice a year longer trips for holidays (between 200 - 500 miles one way).

Did consider electric as it would do for the 'regular use', just not sure how I'd cope with going on holidays (especially the anxiety of finding charging points).

Nothing is as cheap as pre-Covid. You might struggle to find what you want for the age/price.

Toyota Corolla Touring Sport 2.0l?

I'm afraid they fall into the 'butt ugly' category; and 0-60 in over 10 seconds...?

Plus they're the same money as e.g. a 3 series beamer - so I can't really see any benefits

Toyota Corolla Touring Sport 2.0l?

I'm afraid they fall into the 'butt ugly' category

See this is the problem with a poster wanting a good looking car, or in this case, one which isn't "butt ugly", it's entirely subjective!. IMO the Corolla Touring is about the best looking car of its type, and certainly better looking than either a V60 or 3 Series!

and 0-60 in over 10 seconds...?

For what it's worth, the 2.0 version of the Corolla Touring (as suggested by Heidfirst) actually does 0-60 in around 8 seconds (but 0-60 times aren't that great as an indicator of how lively a car is going to feel on the road)

Plus they're the same money as e.g. a 3 series beamer - so I can't really see any benefits

Reliability?

My C-HR has the same 184 bhp 2 litre hybrid power unit as available in the Corolla Touring Sports, there surprisingly nippy with plenty of punch available for overtaking.

The TNGA platform shared with the Corolla with its double wishbone rear suspension also makes a safe engaging drive on a twisty road if you wish.

Timing chain engine, D-4S port & direct fuel injection so no carbon build up issues, no starter motor, no alternator, no drive belts plus bulletproof E-CVT transmission & up to 10 years warranty if you service it in the Toyota main dealer network.

The hybrid battery can have up to 15 years warranty.

As a Toyota owner I find my C-HR boringly reliable & its the only car I've owned that has returned better fuel economy then the official published figures.

We have plenty of Corolla Touring Sports on the company car fleet & there also boringly reliable.

Plenty of Police forces have Corolla Touring Sports as general patrol vehicles & some Fire & rescue service have them on the fleet as well - being built in the UK helps as well, 2 litre hybrid power unit is built in Poland.

You could try a PHEV and get a very cheap commute without having to worry about longer trips. Skoda Superb, Kia Optima or VW Passat GTE would all potentially work. It's difficult to know what people think looks good. BMW and Mercedes also do/did PHEVs but they weren't considered all that good. There was a Renault Megane PHEV for a while, which was supposed to be pretty good.

A manual Audi A4 2.0 TDi would be my choice of the above options. I wouldn’t touch the automated manual self shifter, they’re prone to early failures. The rest you mention aren’t the premium products they once were. I’m flogging a 68 plate Merc C200 SE Estate auto because I just don’t feel that it’s well made. Parts and servicing costs are high yet the 12yr Old Ford Focus I’m using as a commuter is a better built car, and more enjoyable to drive. All personal opinion of course,

I’m a bit blue collar when it comes to cars and I don’t get the desire for a prestige badge these days as they aren’t the solidly built mechanically robust vehicles they were in the 80’s and 90’s. There’s so much can and does go wrong with modern BMW’s and Volvo’s plus I feel that my Merc just doesn’t pass muster as a quality product, with cheap nasty plastics everywhere inside. The Audi is a better car, but they are a bit firm riding in Sport spec so take a good drive before committing. I’d like a Skoda Superb estate with the same 2.0 TDi and gearbox, but they are a last time we found that they were almost all autos, and I won’t touch VAG’s DSG box.

I’m options for electric this time, with a low mileage high spec VW ID3 replacing the Merc shortly. At £15,500 it’s cheaper than many petrol or diesel equivalents yet it costs buttons to run. I can charge at home and for free at work so it’s a no brainer for us.
