  • Volkswagen Golf V TDI - Gears 27 Sep 2013 (Forum)
Just wondering if anyone can help me?  Basically my car is playing up with the gears. When I change gear I don't have to put the clutch down, i can just take it out and put it into a new gear. This is worrying me slightly because it's not supposed to do this, and I've had the car for 2 months.
  • VW Golf VI - No Dipped Beam Symbol On Speedo 14 Mar 2011 (Forum)
At first service mentioned fault that no green symbol for Dipped Beam appeared although the blue Main Beam light was working. I was told that this was deliberate but first car that I've driven to not have a Dipped Beam display and it is in the handbook though it covers umpteen variants. Anyone come across anyhing similar? Seemed good main dealer and had the experience of looking at 60 plate Mercedes SLS/gull-wing F1safety car at front door; lovely sound and look in classic silver.
  • Vauxhall Meriva - Cylinder head cracked....... 25 Aug 2010 (Forum)
After a few posts here re the above car. I have been waiting for an assessor to look at my car and at last he arrived to do this! I called the workshop a short while ago and apparently the head is cracked and has been sent to wherever to be sorted one way or another.
  • Choice of warranty on used car 8 Jun 2010 (Forum)

  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 02 1.8 ABS System 9 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Hi All Up until last sunday car was fine and only passed its MOT 4 weeks ago. Slowing down for a set of lights foot pedal went tight and vibrated. First thoughts was that the car had slipped on a manhole cover but it continued to happen intermittently.
  • Secret[s] Please of 'Smear Free' Car Hand Wash! 17 Apr 2008 (Forum)

  • ANPR Question 12 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Reason i ask is i see all the "traffic Cop" type programmes and often see them alerted to No insurance , Tax and MOT alerts, i was wondering about company cars that are covered by bonds or block insurance, would these keep ringing the alarms everytime you pass one? My old firm had a "bond" as it was a transport company and all cars were just under that, surely on ANPR thsi would flag as no insurance held?
  • Honda Jazz - extended warranty 29 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Normally I never buy extended guarantees, but, bearing in mind I'd have to get some sort of recovery cover (it's really Mrs Payer's car) and that would cost £70 per year, I'm wondering whether to go for it or not? The car has been faultless over 3 yrs, but I'm thinking that if almost anything went wrong with it then it could easily cost a small fortune.
  • Longer term European insurance 15 Sep 2006 (Forum)
I'm a contractor that works several months in Europe. I would like to take my car over on more than the usual 1-3 months allowance on UK insurance. Does anyone know if there are specialist insurers in the UK that will offer longer term cover when abroad. Do any of the regular insures offer more generous terms.
  • Laptop Theft 14 Sep 2006 (Forum)
I know you're not supposed to keep it in there but she's 32 weeks pregnant and it's kinda heavy. anyway...how did they know it was there? The cover was across the boot so nothing could be seen - and it's not the sort of car a laptop user has - not the BMW 120 next to it and the Boxster opposite. They knew - but how? The computer was off - so no Bluetooth, no WiFi etc.
  • Vroom Vroom 23 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Just in case I am, think Max Power meets Saturday morning kids TV show, only alot more dangerous. Their "star in a fur covered car" came very close to losing her right hand when her car flipped over and she instinctively reached out to brace herself and nearly got it caught between the A pillar and the road. Could have been very nasty.
  • Polish Driver Insurance Help 16 Jan 2006 (Forum)

  • Golf mk 4 suspension 12 Oct 2005 (Forum)
You know the clunk-clunk noise your car makes when you go over a loose man-hole cover? A similar although much quieter sound is coming from my Golf mk4 GTI's front suspension when I go over bumps - only noticable when going very slowly.
  • god help us! 28 Sep 2004 (Forum)
i was most reassured to read in the manchester evening news, that a serving p.c, tarik mahood aged 30 has, despite being convicted of leaving the scene of a accident {in which a injured mother and child were left trapped in their car} having no insurance and then going to elaborate lengths to cover his tracks including respraying his car and trying to coherce his girlfreind into lying and stating she was the driver has retained his job (however a spokesmen for gmp has said his present duties will not include driving),words fail me
  • Accord diesel on its way 19 Feb 2004 (Forum)
It looks as if Honda were telling me porkies when they said it would be late March, early April. I'm having my personal plate transferred to the Honda and the dealer said that I need a cover note for the new car in order to register it. Is this something new? Last time I changed my car they just needed my insurance certificate.
  • Vauxhall Reliability? 30 Nov 2002 (Forum)
My son is thinking of buying an Omega with the 2.2 chain cam engine to cover approx 35k miles yearly. With all the recent adverse press reports(JD Power & Auto Express) on G.M. reliability, I would appreciate any comments from backroomers with experience of this model. I have looked on H.J`s car x car breakdown for this model which gives a conflicting picture - came 3rd from top in the Which 2002 survey and 8th from the bottom in the Auto Express 2002 report.
  • Subaru Justy 10 Mar 2001 (Forum)
Running my second Subaru Justy (1990 GL II) have noticed over this winter mayonnaise on the oil filler cap I recall that the previous car did this. There doesn't appear to be any water in the coolant or any loss of water. The rocker cover is plastic with a metal plate inside. Could it just be condensation on short journeys? I doesn't tend to be too bad after motorway journeys.
  • Our cars were damaged by a roof fitter, can we use our insurer even if it wasn't a road traffic accident? 2 May 2018 (Ask HJ)
Our next door neighbour had a roofer installing fibre glass in their roof during, which resulted in both our cars being covered in fibre glass and resin....
  • Subaru Legacy 2.0 RE 2006 - Timing belt horrors 20 Sep 2010 (Forum)
He took off the cover, and said the belt was sloppy, and perhaps the timing belt had jumped, maybe it needed a replacement tensioner, and they'd fit one for me. So the local garage took it away. The invoice reads (complete with typos) "Check for fault with car cut out, found the timing belt loose, dismantle as req, drain off coolant and remove radiator, unbolt and remove timing covers, found two bolts seized in timing cover, found timing bolt tensioner bolt snaped, removed timing belt and tensioner, drill out snaped peice of bolt, supply and fit new tensioner with new bolt, torque tensioner bolt to 35NM.
  • Paint work warranty - worth nothing! 16 Jul 2007 (Forum)
It could only have been there for a couple of hours, but it has seriously damaged the paintwork (the laquer has lifted). No problem, I thought (how naive!), it should be covered under the paint work warranty. How wrong I was - bird droppings are an "external influence" so the damage isn't covered. I know bird droppings are corrosive - this is why I use a quality wax, and wipe them off when they occur, but surely paint should stand up to a dropping for a couple of hours?
