Car on SORN, how to tax it - sydney the oz
Got a car on SORN ready to go back on the road, not worth a busting lot so only need 3rd party cover, but do need to tax it at the start of next month. I can drive it legally on my everyday car policy 3rd party clause (as this car is not registered to me) but have I got to insure it separately just to buy a tax disc? Or can I take my main policy to the PO and be allowed to buy my expensive little circular beermat (aka tax disc)?
And if I do need another insurance, where can I get a cheap short term insurance good enough to tax with?

Check your main policy.

I suspect that the wording will say that your driving other cars doesn't include cars owned or hired by you (not that it merely excludes cars registered to you). Therefore you probably can't actually drive the car legally anyway.

Even if you can get around the insurance issue, if it's your car, surely you are required to become the registered keeper on the basis that you're the person who mainly uses it and will continue to do so? Even if the car actually belongs to someone else, the registration document is not proof of title, merely of who is the car's keeper.

Although there probably is a way to do what you're asking and get the tax disc, it would still involve fraud against the insurer and a further fraudulent representation to get the tax also.

I doubt it. Insurance companies expect the vehicle to be insured for you to use your DOV extention to your policy. Ring and make sure then get it in writing. I was in court last last week and listened to one of these cases and he got 6 points and £350 plus £65 costs and £15 victim surcharge. A vehicle with no primary insurance against the registration is not insured unless you have a 'trade plates'. Regards Peter

If it is parked on the road without you sat in it with your DOC, then it is uninsured.
A good target ofr a tow-away and/or crush.

DOV will not cover you to tax it. Owner and registered keeper are not necessarily the same. If you have some title over the vehicle then you are the owner and are not covered under DOV. Is in the smallprint.

Not so long ago insurance certificates only had the name of the Policyholder on it, no registration numbers. Open to abuse! Similarly eveything is on a database now and checks can be easily made by th PO.
