  • DENSO Iridium Spark Plugs 5 Feb 2005 (Forum)
I read that they are prone to damage when detonation occurs but is that the fault of the plug or incorrect set up of the fueling system? Basically the car needs to be tuned properly as I understand it. Any comments please? Cheers Simon
  • Optimax: evidence of effectiveness? 13 Oct 2004 (Forum)
A friend of a friend has a model steamboat. He fuels the boiler with a 50:50 mixture of paraffin and petrol. He and all his steamboat club mates have switched to Optimax because, unlike other petrol, it leaves their engines and smokestacks clean as a whistle.

  • ford fusion yes/no ? 23 Feb 2004 (Forum)
we were thinking about a new motor recently and the fusion 1.4 tdci diesel caught my wifes eye, although my initial comment was (it looks like a van with windows)i am now not sure. The fuel consumption figures look good. any views ?
  • Mazda 6 Diesel 10 Oct 2003 (Forum)
I'm considering buying one of these (121ps version). The only thing putting me off is the relatively poor official fuel consumption figures of 42.8 on the combined cycle. Does any one have any experience of this car and can advise if this figure reflects what they usually achieve? Thanks.
  • Volkswagen Passat 9 Sep 2003 (Forum)
The 1.8 SE 20V may be the model that would suite me but I have found a good 1.8T which is tempting. Does anyone know what insurance group the 1.8T is and whether it requires super unleaded fuel?
  • Calling Mini Cooper Owners 8 Aug 2003 (Forum)
A friend is interested in a new Cooper (non S) and needs an auto. A BMW dealer has planted some doubt in her mind by suggesting that the fuel consumption is the wrong side of 20 mpg! The figures (mixed driving) suggest otherwise. Anybody got any experience of this one?
  • flat battery and jump starting 19 May 2003 (Forum)
Can i start this with jump leads from my Octavia TDI. i know it's a daft question, but something at the back of my mind tells me no because of the different types of fuel. Thanks
  • Car parks 20 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Surely it is more logical to arrange them in a herringbone pattern thus saving the frustration of trying to do a 90 degree turn in limited space. Think of all the fuel and tyres it would save.
  • Octane Booster 6 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Super Unleaded fuel gives an improvement in consumption approximately equal to the increase in octane, ie 95 > 98 = 3% better consumption. The downside is that SUL is more than 3% more expensive than unleaded. Does HJ, or any other contributor, know of any Octane Booster which is cost-effective to use?
  • Indicative costs 13 Apr 2002 (Forum)
96 Mondeo TD Fuel Pump problem. Cost (time) to remove, have sent away for checking and repair, return and refit? (I know the send away for checking etc could be any price but someone might deal in such things and know what goes and gets charged) Any ideas appreciated
  • Gassed up 20 Aug 2001 (Forum)
I use less than half a tank of fuel a week but out of habit allways top up to the brim on the weekly shop. Would I gain more in terms of economy if I ran the car between half full and near empty on a regular basis??Any other technical advantages?
  • Electric Cars 14 Aug 2001 (Forum)
Two questions really; 1) What's the state of progress and usability of electric cars these days ? 2) Are they really better than other fuels when you include generating the electricity, making the battery, disposing of old batteries etc. etc. ? M.
  • Pug 2008 1.2 EAT6 30 fuel consumption - Motorway versus country roads 6 Apr 2021 (Forum)
I hope some might be interested by this rather long post, and perhaps as surprised as I was that the fuel consumption on the long quiet motorway trip wasn't better than its usual short journey work.  It probably would have been if we had been regularly slowed to 55mph by the elephant racers, as like most SUVs I doubt if it has a good drag coefficient.
  • Mercedes W203 C220 Diesel - No throttle black smoke 7 Jan 2014 (Forum)
Ive had the Cats cleaned Turbo Intercooler pipes EGR and all vaccum pipes checked cleaned and checked for leaks. Also checked O rings Fuel feed pipes everything fine. There's no DPF on this car either. The only Significant Code that came up stated 'No low Airflow to Charge' and there were secondary codes stating low pressure from fuel pressure rail sensor Low temp from charge sensor Checked cleaned sensors and they're operating fine Also fuel pressure test confirmed no problem there.
  • Ford Mondeo Estate 61 plate - Ford 1.6TDCi & engine malfunction - limp home mode 1 Jan 2014 (Forum)
So although I'm doing nothing wrong buy using supermarket diesel when you mix it with big brand diesel it causes a "gelling" in the fuel filter which reduces fuel pressure which the engine does not like, hence engine malfunction.   I've read other posts talk about having replacement injectors / new dpf's but this (i'm told) is all wrong.
  • Mazda 6 - Idling and low rev torubles 18 Jun 2013 (Forum)
It has service history (not dealer) and all looked good, up until it started stalling for no reason while sat at idle. First thing was to run a full tank of fuel with injector cleaner in as the car had been sat for a while unused. Also replaced the fuel filter. After a google search I've heard of a common fault with the SCV on the fuel pump so I replaced that but no difference.

  • SEAT Ibiza ST Reference 1.6 diesel - Fuel economy 2 Jul 2011 (Forum)
With an additional two years warranty (four years in total,) 3,000 Euros discount and with a one third deposit, the balance over three years with interest free credit, what is there not to like?  No other car agent offered anything to compare.  The fuel economy is an additional pleasant surprise. Next year we shall be changing my partner's car and we both are convinced that another Seat will join us.
