Hyundai i30 - Keep or sell at 3 years? 16 Jul 2011 (Forum)
Just a hypothetical question I am wrestling with. I have 3 year old Hyundai i30 CRDi (diesel), 25k miles on the clock and full service history. Car in general runs fine, 55mpg, only a couple of very minor niggles fixed under warranty. A friend of mine suggested that I should sell the car this year and have a layout of around 2.5k to buy a year old i30. -
Hyundai Hybrid Engine Failure Common? 31 May 2022 (Forum)
Hi, I was chatting with an old acquaintance who told me the tale of there 11 month old Hyundai car engine failing, something to do with the failure of the tension idler. More interestingly it’s fairly widespread. Anyone have any further details or experience? -

Scrap Metal 26 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I've got an old car bonnet and some old brake discs to dispose of. Are scrap metal merchants likely to be interested in such things or would I be better taking them to my local dump. Someone said to me yesterday that they would be worth something but to be honest, I wouldn't have thought so. -
Audi 100 and 'Old' A6 (1991 - 1997) - Auto pushed forward when in 'P' during accident 12 Dec 2007 (Forum)
A parked Auto was pushed forward a couple of feet when driven into by a car. The auto was in 'P'. What is the likelihood of considerable damage? -
Are there many non-common rail diesels? 13 Nov 2008 (Forum)
My CDTI Vectra looks unlikely to last past 90k without some wopping bills. My old tddi Focus did much better. So, as I still need a diesel to cope with the mileage etc, are there any cars (I'm looking at 3 years old or younger) that have a non common rail diesel? I know the old TDDI focus engine was slagged by the motoring press, but it was less troublesome that the vectra common rail (or perhaps any common rail judging by some of the comments on here!) -
Advice on a future used car purchase 31 Jan 2017 (Forum)
When looking at vehicles not spending much on an older one seems appealing as hear stories of people buying 10 year old cars for 2k and them lasting another 5 years with minimal expenditure - then you hear about other having to spend another 2k on them within months. Similar with 5 year old cars or newer, but then initial purchase is higher as well! -
The future of luxury cars 14 Mar 2006 (Forum)
With all the different factors such as oil prices, congestion, parking, corporate social responsibility, environmental concerns, company car schemes etc, is it just a matter of time before luxury cars are extinct? Currently, since a lot of big cars with big engines depreciate so rapidly, they are good value for money at 3-5 years old. -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 00 1.8 Changed oil but unable to remove filter 14 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Access was awkward and the filter was tight, I'm not sure when it was last changed because I have only had the car a week. I put in new oil but left in the old oil filter which was slightly damaged but not punctured. Would there be any detrimental effect to the car by leaving the old filter in? I can either take it to the garage to get them to change just the filter or leave it till the next oil change and do both. -
Daewoo Matiz (1998 - 2004) - 00 800c cd player, no power 27 Dec 2009 (Forum)
Any ideas? It seems the plug in her car works in the old cd player and not the newer one. Phil. Thanks. -
Where do lorries go to die? And why? 27 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Here's a puzzler: there are many thousands of cars on the road over 10 years old (L plate or older). Why does one rarely see older lorries? Try it next time you're on a tedious M way journey: you rarely see them more than a few years old. Now, I can understand that a hard worked commercial might drop to bits and reach a point where it becomes unviable more quickly than a car would. -
Old VW Polo cutting out 14 Oct 2003 (Forum)
My 1994 1.0 Polo coupe (the very last of the old model with fuel injection) has the irritating and dangerous fault of losing power for no apparent reason. The car can go for hundreds of miles without fault, and then on one journey, go dead usually at low revs. -
Bye bye Subaru, hello Subaru 11 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Well I've finally bitten the bullet and made up my mind on my next car. The old base spec Legacy has been part-exed. I really wanted an Impreza STi Spec D with the prodrive pack but that is pushing £29k new and I don't do new, it hurts too much in the wallet. I'll wait a year or two until they appear at a year old or pre-reg'd. -
Importing a classic from the Netherlands to the UK 29 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Having searching various dutch tax sites I'm still not sure of the actual answer. I'm considering buying an old Alfa Romeo from a dutch marque specialist. The car is 42 years old and I am keen to understand whether VAT is payable in the Netherlands or whether as the car is for export the car is purchased without the VAT and I pay the UK VAT on the purchase price when the car is re-registered in the UK. -
First cars - the ones you're most likely to crash. 27 Feb 2008 (Forum)
I find it ironic that mainly due to insurance reasons young drivers are forced to drive round tin boxes like the 106, AX, Metro etc. All these cars have a high death point score on HJ's used car breakdowns yet are likely to be driven by 18 year olds with no experience. Does anybody else think there is something wrong here? Hopefully as time passes these old superminis will mostly be scrapped and modern ones (which are safe) will become the bangers. -
Buying from dealer, what to offer? 13 Sep 2006 (Forum)
I've decided to sell on my 10 year old fiesta and get another VW golf (wife has a tdi 90). Most of the cars I've looked at are around £7000 - £8000 (tdi 130s). Having always bought my old company cars I've never been in the position to buy a car from a dealer, so I was wondering what would be a sensible opening offer to make on a car with a sticker price of £7500?. -
Regional variation in 2nd hand prices? 18 Jul 2003 (Forum)
So, is it just a myth that cars are cheaper in the north? Any input gratefully received. oh and just in case it makes a difference: will be flogging a 5 year old Passat and buying a Mondeo (estate?) or similar about 1 year old. -
Volvo V50 (2004 - ) - V50 New Car Deal 15 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Been offered a factory ordered Volvo V50 2.0d s in metallic paint of my choice on the road inc 12m RFL for £14900 inc my old car(realistically worth £500) on the scrappage scheme. This is a local dealer so the logistics of getting my old car to him are good. Internet dealers could require me to get my car to supplying dealer anywhere in the country. -
THB Bury car phone kit 3 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Just purchased a car that has the THB Bury car kit installed. It has a 'Take and Talk' adapter for the old Nokia 3 series phones. Before buying an adapter for my current phone (around £50) I dug out an old nokia 3310 to see if it all worked. -
