Fords and Toyotas - which type of automatic? 20 Jul 2017 (Forum)
It might be helpful - thinking particularly of Sorceress who is looking for a small automatic - if we knew which cars have torque-converter autos or CVT (generally reliable) and which have semi-automatics (jerky, unreliable or both). SLO will know this I'm sure, but all views welcome! From what I know, Volvos, BMWs, Mercedes, Mazdas, JLRs, Kias, Hyundais and most other big cars have TQ autos, and newer Hondas have CVT. Only the biggest Audis have CVT, otherwise it's DSG throughout the VW Group. Fords and Toyotas seem to vary - so which have TQ autos and which have Powershift and MMI respectively? -
Mini One - 2007 - Electric Panoramic Sunroof 27 Jul 2015 (Forum)
I have read about tapping it shut with a hammer and screwdriver or taking it to a dealer and them fixing it but charging a fortune to do so. I understand lots of Minis have had this problem with their sunroof but BMW/Mini are not taking responsibility. I just want to close the sunroof for now! Does anyone have any suggestions! Getting desparate now the summer storms have started! Thanks -
- Supermarket Fuel Telegraph Cars Section Today 2 Jul 2015 (Forum)
Talking OEM parts the lads in GSF were shocked to hear a lady customer request a set of £25 pads for her M power BMW! But its the same with tyres. A quick check will show the extent of motorists with high performance cars fitting budget tyres. And the windscreens supplied by the insurance company representatives appear to be cheap chinese copies not Pilkington or Secursiv. -
Toyota Auris - Delayed delivery 24 Mar 2014 (Forum)
So, any thoughts? Why facelift a new model so soon? I wonder if it may be linked to the engine deal with BMW that was discussed? Cheers, Dabooka -
Toyota & Honda - Toyota and Honda have the last laugh 2 Dec 2013 (Forum)
I was reading an article this morning that BMW will be focusing on electric technology as that is the only way they can meet future emmissions regulations - even if that is not what customers want. It is no secret that they are sharing hybrid technology with Toyota - presumably to play catch up. -
Winter Driving 1 Dec 2013 (Forum)
Off course everyone has winter tyres with many of them studded (allowed between October and March - I think) and I was surprised at how effective these are - even on rear wheel drive cars. Saw loads of BMWs and Mercs getting around with no problem. Most Taxis in Norway seem to be Mercs so they clearly work well with winter tyres. Once again confirms the view that 4x4 are nothing but a status symbol to many people - although I do appreciate some people do need them for their jobs such as farmers etc. -

Best automatic for my requirements...? 6 Aug 2012 (Forum)
Would prefer max 4-5 years old, max 60,000 miles on the clock So far for the money, I like the looks of VW Jetta 1.9 or 2.0 TDi DSG (2008) or BMW 320d (2007). DSG gets good reviews but I'm put off by horror stories of failures and expensive repairs. But equally there are reports of problems on the 320d (turbo failure etc). Any thoughts on the above? -

Why hasn't it been done. 21 Feb 2012 (Forum)
I know there is a thread on here about unique features in cars, but I thought perhaps there is scope for a "Why hasn't it been done?" thread too... For me it is cameras and screens instead of wing mirrors? Surely BMW or Mercedes should have done this by now, lop off the wing mirrors to make the car look nice and sleek and instead mount tiny cameras in their place feeding back to small screens on each pillar. IMHO would look nicer and would make cars slightly more aerodynamic so saving fuel. -
Any - Is there are a directory of start/stop 21 Jan 2012 (Forum)
Cars I could be interested in: Audi A3, Seat Leon, VW Golf, VW Scirocco Citroen C4, Peugeot 307 or 308 BMW 1 series Volvo C30 Need to find something under £10K, so something that has been around a few years would be of interest, newer models won't be in my price range range yet Guy -
If only everything in life was as reliable as ... 22 Jul 2011 (Forum)
On the way up this morning I thought I'd see if this was a coincidence - amazingly I spotted another two Passats and one Golf! The only other breakdown was a BMW 3 series – a full-house for the Germans. Statistically the breakdown rate for the VWs is breathtaking - not a single "nasty" Ford or Vauxhall stranded its owner during my journey time - I shall keep my little tally going to see if it was just a remarkable coincidence... -
Rover 75 - In the market for an estate car... 27 Jun 2011 (Forum)
However I am rather scared by the reputation for head gasket failure.... I'm presuming this would not be an issue for the diesels, though, which i understand have a BMW engine. Could someone confirm this is indeed the case? Also I'm wondering if Rover parts are available at reasonable prices or if repair costs are likely to work out overly high... Really would appreciate the opinion of someone in the know.... -
MINI MINI Cooper and S R56 (2007 - ) - Noise on cold start 6 Feb 2011 (Forum)
The mother of one of my daughter's friends has a new '57-reg Mini Cooper. The engine was reported to be 'noisy' on a cold start. The BMW dealer have told them that its fine and 'normal'. I've now listened to it and it doesn't sound right to me - sounds like piston slap or possibly a small-end. Anyone got a new (2007) Mini and confirm this noise as being normal? -
bmw320cd sport 2004 - Gearbox noise 2 Nov 2010 (Forum)
it mostly happens when i keep the acceleration at a constant level, espesially if goen up a slight hill or even on a level road. when the light for the automatic transmission came up on the dash I brought it to the bmw garage. they replaced the gear selector. I got the car back but the problem returned the next day. I brought the car back and they replaced the gear box fluid. but the problem came back. I returned the car and they said they done a few jobs on it. -
Cars that will give 5-6 years "no hassle" use? 30 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Reading today's Telegraph there are tales of woe from VAG & BMW owners about problems just out of warranty, and there's even a thread in Technical about a Honda which needed expensive repairs. Issues with various Vauxhall models are legion, and I even recently saw a comment about a Lexus which had destroyed its clutch and Lexus were being unhelpful. -

Precautions when battery changing. 24 Jun 2009 (Forum)
.;) But i hear that some cars do have problems if battery power is lost, and more problems if you mess up connecting a new battery, yes even if connected correctly. It'll come to pass probably this winter that the BMW compact battery will die, i shall use my trusty jump pack to maintain constant power to the car whilst performing said renewal..i understand BM's can be temperamental if power is lost for some time. -
SAAB 900 (1993 - 1998) - 97 2.5 reset of the soft top roof. 29 May 2009 (Forum)
Hi I have a great 900 soft top however just as its getting sunny the roof isnt working, Ive just had a Auto electric man out to look at it and he works more with BMWs so not expert on SAABs. He said its best to start with a reset on the hood as we already know theres power to the switch. However as he doesnt work with these cars often he doesnt know how to reset it, He is looking into this for me but i thought id try and show off abit and find out the details for him myself.
