Buying a car from Far Far Away 6 Feb 2010 (Forum)
I keyed in all the info on the site and the car checked out clean. I still had to see the VIN on the car. Obviously I couldn't do this until I met him so I would make sure I had the HPI report with me when I set off. 4) I then needed to make sure I had breakdown cover. -
KIA Ceed 2011 - The mystery of the resurrected battery... 21 Oct 2019 (Forum)
So strange... did that initial jump knacker the battery? Will test the alternator tomorrow. Fingers cross it was just the battery... Cars! Who’d have ‘em?? -
Toyota MR2 mk2 - Clocked/rotten car...am I entitled to money back? 26 Oct 2017 (Forum)
And I wasn't informed of any of the problems. Anyway I drew a line under it and took it to a specialist who informed me that the car is 'rotten' the sills have been botched together out of bubble wrap cardboard and had a fibreglass sill cover stuck on. As well as that, bushes are all on their way out, rust everywhere to the point where things have just fallen off! -

New engine failed after 9000 miles, where next 21 Oct 2017 (Forum)
Hi, first timer poster here, sorry for the lengthy first post! We had an issue with our car last year that resulted in the manufacturer paying up to have a new engine fitted; the car was, at the time, 9 years old but had a full service history and the engine failed with a known issue (crankshaft failure, not admitted by the manufacturer though, but very well documented). -
Peugeot 206 - Labour costs 7 Jul 2015 (Forum)
My girlfriend had a clutch failure last year and a new 3 part clutch pack was installed on the car on 25 May 2014. Fast forward a little over 13 months and she suffered a breakdown on her way home from work. The clutch pedal went straight to the floor as she stopped to give way at a roundabout. -

Audi A3 - Advice on buying Automatics 28 Aug 2010 (Forum)
My brain hurts so bad so I’m posting on here in the hope someone will help it stop. I apologise in advance for transferring the brain-ache and / or if this has already been covered somewhere else. To summarise, my last two cars have been semi-automatic gearboxes (1st one a Renault Clio Quickshift, 2nd a Citroen C3 Sensodrive) and both have been spectacularly, almost outstandingly unreliable, almost killed me on several occasions and ended their sorry lives as part ex’s that went for peanuts. -
Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 96 1.8 (petrol/carb) erratic idle & cutting out 3 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Setting the thing on fire is starting to sound better by the minute ? OK ? 7 out of the 12 times the car died there was no fuel in the fuel filter ? and I noticed that the oily end of my dipstick was covered in tinny bubbles, now this is something I haven?t noticed before as I rarely look at the oily end of my dipstick ? -
Suzuki Alto (2009 - ) - Test drove it today 14 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Switchgear nicely weighted, indicators make the classy sound that the mk 1 Focus used to (thankfully not the 'ping ping' of the Suzuki Splash). Overall, I think it's a really decent car, offering a good level of kit, great economy, and low emissions. For someone who covers only 5-6000 miles per year and doesn't need lots of space, this sort of car makes sense (without needing to pay the premium for the IQ and having less room). -
Paint protection - is it a con? 27 Jul 2006 (Forum)
Had I been told I would have been unlikely to have bought the protection. Basically this condition means you aren't covered if you go on holiday - what use is that? 3. As the only time I've ever had bird muck damage to my paint in the last 20 years of driving has been on the only car I've had with paint protection, I seriously doubt that this stuff does anything whatsoever to protect the paint! -
VW Inspection service lunacy 27 Jun 2003 (Forum)
Assuming that it takes no more than 90 minutes and GBP25 (although as we all know its a lot less by the barrel anyway) for the oil, that is a fantastic GBP105 per hour for the privilege of visiting a dealer that won't pick the car up, has a much scruffier showroom and appeared to have no secure facilities to store my car for the day whilst I was at work and they were playing Midas with their black gold. Needless to say, you can work out where my money is going. -
Insurance claim dilemma 21 May 2002 (Forum)
If their own assessor writes the car off next week, they will pay "market value" and she can keep the car. My concern for her is that if she carries on with the claim through her own insurance company then there is a risk they will dock her no claim discount if they don't get everything back to their satisfaction. -
A new motor for Daveyjp 5 Jul 2015 (Forum)
After almost 4.5 years ownership, close to 50,000 miles, 47,000 of these in my ownership, yesterday was time to say goodbye to the B class. The car covered the miles effortlessly and never let me down and drove as well as day one. However recently some items were starting to fail and boredom was setting in – I seem to have a habit of trading at about 50,000 miles. -
SEAT Toledo - My new car 17 Sep 2018 (Forum)
A family member has just taken ownership of a 2015 Fabia and I was frustrated to see how easy it was to update both the maps, and system firmware, using the online Skoda portal. This free service is attached to the car for 3 years and is available for SEAT in Europe! Warranty – The SEAT warranty is equivalent to the Skoda new car warranty (3 years / 60K miles), but I was disappointed to see the breakdown cover only applies for 2 years, whereas it is 3 years for a Skoda. -
Renault Zoe 2 Aug 2025 (Forum)
Anyone looking for a sub £10k electric supermini would be well served by one, in fact anyone looking for a small car who has a driveway on which to charge it up should seriously look at one. It’s a far more relaxing and more dependable car than most modern petrol or diesel equivalents. -
Vauxhall Corsa C - Corsa C 1.2 16V - engine noise 9 Oct 2014 (Forum)
I've got a loud tapping noise from what seems like the rear of the engine. However this only happens after about 6/7 miles of driving. It doesn't happen if the car is left to tick over for a hour. The noise then disappears if the car is left ticking over after a drive. The oil light flickers on and off but only at idle in traffic...sometimes it's permanently on but only ever at idle. -
Volvo S80 (1998 - 2006) - 04 2.4 a. Do I need oil? b. What kind? 18 May 2009 (Forum)
Many thanks for any pearls of wisdom you can impart. I realise I've made an easy subject very complicated and for that, I'm sorry. Adam P.S. The car is a petrol. -
Ford C-MAX (2003 - 2010) - (2003-) 1.6 TDCi 110 oil loss 26 Jan 2008 (Forum)
I'd really appreciate some urgent advice re. my father's C Max 1.6 TDCi 110 My father arrived at my house today after a 150 mile drive. A few hours later I went outside in the dark to move my car to the drive and noticed large amounts of engine oil over the front bumper and dripping onto the road. Alerted my father - he had no idea. Lifted the bonnet and the oil filler cap is missing and the whole engine bay covered in oil. -
Skoda Superb (2002 - 2008 ) - Misuse of vehicle recalls. 6 Nov 2007 (Forum)
I'm not impressed with them or their knowledge of VAG vehicles. A few weeks later - a recall notice. This is for the well known tandem pump cover bolts on the PD diesels (see C by C breakdown on old Passat). Knowing that only one maker of the two possible makes of tandem pump is affected, I 'phoned the local dealer to see which it was - my car is busy earning money and there is at least a 50% chance that no action is required.
