  • Urgent Question - Brake Problem. 15 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I am a non-technical person so need comments, please, on the following fairly basic question. This morning I had some work done on N/S/R brake drum. The mechanic took O/S/R wheel off as well and later told me that he had adjusted both brakes. I then did a 50 mile high speed journey before calling at a tyre depot. The fitter there drew my attention to the fact that O/S/R wheel was very hot...binding brake??!!
  • Merc S-Class:Adding a Sub-woofer 17 Jun 2003 (Forum)
The panasonic will need an amp and a sub (in the boot I guess). SHOULD I add anything at all? Is there a particular way of adding such electronics to an S-Class? Or should I just leave it well alone because it's far too great a risk to add anything to such a complex car and make do with the existing 14-speaker setup? Any help or advice appreciated.
  • Celica dying 12 May 2003 (Forum)
Sometimes it dies while I?m sitting there. I haven?t checked anything, the plugs are pretty inaccessible. It?s one of those intermittent faults that?s hard to reproduce. Generally happens when the car is warm, not when cold. I?d be interested in any opinions as to the problem.

  • Your thoughts on contemporary car magazines? 19 Aug 2009 (Forum)
They don`t meed my needs at all. Problem is that I can remember reading mag`s decades back where there was great technical detail, such as clutch plate diameters - gearing and so on. (and so avoid that HA van with its 6" clutch while competitors had 7".. (maybe. memory) That said, I found the latest Car Mechanics a breath of fresh air under it`s new Editor - introducing engine management systems - in the last issue.
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 97 1.25 Vibration at speed/when braking 8 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Also there is no vibration from the steering during cornering at any speed. However at low speeds there is a regular noise coming from the driver?s side front wheel that gets faster as speed increases. It?s like a short scraping/clicking. I?ve had the wheel off and seems to me like the brakes are binding a little when I spin the disc. There?s no play in the inner and outer cv joints.
  • Shark tooth flint attacks tyre + horse hoof Quiz 29 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I remember advice from years gone by to check tyres for `flints`. We were prepared as boys in the 50`s I suppose - carrying around a pen knife with one of those thick long prongs attached in case a horse got a stone caught in it`s hoof. What innocent days. Think what could be interpreted if you were caught on the street or entering a well known accessory store with a long prong in your pocket like that..
  • Repair of Winter roads 27 Feb 2009 (Forum)
I guess due to the combination of snow, ice and salt, small potholes and cracks now resemble craters on the moon, and when it?s rained there?s no telling whether they are an inch deep or a foot deep. There are sections of road where it is only really safe to drive along at either a snails pace or to pass the potholes on the other side of the road.
