1985/86 Nissan Micra Idle When Hot 25 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Today I fitted a replacement carb from a 1990 micra, same thing really. Any one got any ideas on why this car won't run when hot please....? -
Used car for £5000 - suggestions? 25 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Main considerations are fuel economy and general costs to run, though safety is important also. Obvious options seem to be Yaris or Micra (but dare I say it these seem girly cars?), Corsa(long in the tooth?), Fabia (good cars), Panda (strangely appealling) or Punto (too old again?) -
Any tips on breaking in a rebuilt engine 20 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Go gently? Drive it hard? Which type of oil, synth? Mobil 1, or plain mineral oil. I got some 'Comma Running In Oil' but this has no markings as regards viscosity or other specifications, so am a bit nervous about using it. I was planning to just do the initial start-up/cool down + maybe the first drive around the block with the running in oil and then drain and refill with Magnatec semi-synth and leave for 12,000 before switching to Mobil 1. -
BMW 3 series diesel MPG 30 Jan 2005 (Forum)
The thing had no go at all when new, and got considerably better after it had done 500 miles. Its now done 3000 miles and although going better, and I have run it in along HJ's suggestions, the MPG is little different. It seems to average out at 41-42 in normal driving around. This is a mix with very little town driving, mostly runs of 15-40 miles in the country. -
1992 Escort 1.4 - Electric windows 30 Dec 2004 (Forum)
It used to be that with the engine off, the windows would work when the doors were open, and would only work when the doors were closed if the engine was running. Over the space of 2 days there was intermittant working with doors shut and engine running, and now they dont work at all; although when the doors are open everything is fine. (hope thins makes sence so far) Ive sone some investigation and it appears that the window circuit must be some way connected with the interior light - as when the doors are open and the interior light is on the windows work, however as soon as the door is pulled too enough to shut of the light, the windows stop. -
Problem Escort 22 Sep 2004 (Forum)
The car is an N reg Escort 5 door 1.4 LX which has covered 38000 miles from new & is mainly used for short journeys of 3 miles or less at a time, not the best way to run an engine. When occasionally used on longer trips once the vehicle has done 12-15 miles it developes an irregular stutter. This has been happening over the last eighteen months, however during the recent spell of hot weather the engine has been stuttering as described above when run from cold. -

New diesel car choice... 30 Apr 2004 (Forum)
As a student I've been running a 96 Punto 55SX but I graduate this year and its time to upgrade to something a bit bigger and more powerful. Can anyone help me with my choices? SHMBO has been running a Punto Multijet Dynamic for 6 months and 10,000 miles I've rapidly become converted to diesel power, even if in HJ's words this is a very noisy diesel. -
Seat Toledo Rattle 25 Apr 2004 (Forum)
Someone said it may be a wheel bearing, but theres only very slight play and thats seems to be the rack wear anyway. Being Seat, the running gear is basically VW. Any ideas anyone?????? Thanks in advance -
New XType Diesel Has Broken Down 29 Sep 2003 (Forum)
(The Mondeo was fixed with a new ICU) (Ignition Control Unit) The Jaguar engine turns over, the glowplug light flashes but it does not start. After 3 tries it is OK The engine has also cutout several times for no reason or will start and run for approx 10 seconds. What astounds me is why Jaguar are using a Ford Engine/ICU combination that is know to have the above problems !!! The car is with the dealer awaiting a repair and probably a new ICU PS the Diesel, when running, is a lot quicker than the 2.5 V6 XType loan car I have been given. -
How Cold is Cold? 26 Jun 2003 (Forum)
(It has no thermostatic setting control) Having read recent contributions to backroomland about AC, I have been dutifully running the AC system regularly to keep parts lubed and servicable. I have also noted that some contributors have run their systems to being 'uncomfortably cold'. With the recent spell of warm (if not hot)North Wales weather, I have been using the AC by comfort choice and not for routine and the car does not become very cold: just chilled. -
LPG Problem - Rover 820 6 Jun 2003 (Forum)
The car was driven all the way from Oxfordshire to Dover and onto the Ferry to France with no problems whatsoever. However, upon leaving the Ferry in France the car refused to run on LPG. It starts up fine on Petrol, but as soon as the LPG system switches over automatically the engine stops dead immediately. At first she thought the v.hot weather in France was the problem, but when back in the UK it still would only run on Petrol. -
Mature student seeks cheap thrills... 18 Mar 2003 (Forum)
I have decided to make the life-changing step of quitting my job (don't know what my new 'back-room' name will be) and starting a teaching degree as a mature student. For those that don't know, I currently run a 1986 2.0i Auto Granada. This, whilst being an excellent, trouble free (touch wood), rattle free, comfortable car will be far too expensive to run when I start my course. So, I am looking for a small, economical, well-specced diesel (preferrably turbo, but not essential). -

Golf Mk 2 - Lots of repairs needed! 3 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Is that standard for mk2 Golfs or is the wiring shot? And also the previous owner says it will only run on LRP but I'm sure I read somewhere that Mk2 Golf's can run happily on unleaded without any modifications - but then again I read a lot of stuff And finally the heater only seems to blow out cold air - when I put it on, the engine was nice and warm, the settings were correct (I did check!) -
ECU repairs - help! 4 Sep 2002 (Forum)
I arranged for the items to be fitted at a local independent Saab garage, who found that the engine would not run with new (upgraded)ECU. Still runs fine on original ECU. It has been taken to a pukka Saab dealer for diagnostics today, turns out that the ECU has been fitted before and is definitely faulty. I have checked the FAQ sections on this site & phoned a couple of companies but no-one I've found so far is prepared to fix this unit. -
Land Rover 25 Oct 2021 (Forum)
SILs 2017 Land Rover sport ...think it's a diesel... has an engine warning light on. The car runs ok but a visit to the dealer got a quote of...wait for it...£5000 to put right. Bit ironic really as a mate of mine bought an early (2004 if my memory is working) Freelander for a few hundred pounds and it's been fine. -
Kia Sorento - Tyres 20 Aug 2021 (Forum)
I drive on gravel tracks and main roads - occasionally motorways. I am willing to pay for quality tyres with good grip in the wet, quiet running and reasonable fuel economy. Falcons have been suggested. What would your reccommendation be please? -

Buying a runaround 27 Mar 2021 (Forum)
I need to buy a second-hand 'runaround' that serves the purpose of picking up the kids from school while our 'main car' is doing the commutes. So I need it to be safe, reliable, cheap to run and under £1,500 . Is that realistic and, if so, what should I be looking at? Always liked VWs but happy to deviate. Thanks!
