Any good ones - Small SUV/Crossover auto transmission? 2 Apr 2021 (Forum)
Please help! Maybe some other pretty looking car options? Thank you in advance. P.S. was thinking even about audi A1 (if wont find a good suv as almost polo size) but seems alot of money for such a small vehicle. -
Which boringly Cheap and Older Q car can one get? 18 Mar 2019 (Forum)
Don’t mind large engines and in fact prefer large petrol engines and insurance costs are not a problem however a reasonable reliability would be an advantage (this tends to leave out Audi and BMW) So it looks like there are only a few Hondas and Toyotas left. Any thoughts on older BMW’s or Vauxhall’s? Or any other suggestions ? Volvo perhaps Thanks for any suggestions, however outlandish they may seem. -
All makes - The future of Company Cars 15 Jun 2017 (Forum)
Unless you are a city trader living in Maidenhead and travelling to the city wher a hybrid is ideal, the average rep may prefer the certainty of a diesel starting without charging , having a great range and only needs filling up once or twice a week , instead of three times with a large petrol. Clarkson travelled to Edinburgh return on one tankful of diesel in an Audi A6 So economically the diesel is the only option and car fit for purpose for company car use IMHO. Refill time 5 minutes , all electric up to two hours depending on power source. -
Honest John Awards 2014 19 May 2014 (Forum)
From my perspective (trying to be impartial, despite my owning a mk1 Mazda3), I fail to understand why the 5*-rated new Mazda3 did not even merit a 'commendation' (i.e. on the shortlist) for the 'Small Family Car', yet the very average Honda Civic (4*) and especially the Toyota Auris (3*) apparently do? In my view, the Audi A3 Sportback and SEAT Leon deserve to be there (I'm a fan of the Leon), but why not the Mazda3? Do the 'nominations' represent an amalgam of HJ staff views, one person (HJ? - I thought he liked the Mazda3) or if one staff member says no, then it doesn't get a mention? -
What Gear 24 Apr 2014 (Forum)
So curious, what gear are you in at 30 or is my driving technique bad. Also, looking for, a replacment car and took outt a 3.0 Audi auto A5 for a test drive a couple days ago, but when I tried to stick to the 20mph speed limit on one of the side roads the auto box kept changing up a couple of seconds later down again, then 30 seconds up again, is it faulty, the car or me? -
What car - Buying a car 5 Jan 2014 (Forum)
Is there any particular car that suits my needs I am tired of looking and I either find high mileage BMW,audi ,vw or less mileage polo's I love the big brand cars as everyone but is it worth checking those cars for pint of money and my needs so I am just going to rely on your expert advise to tell me which car to buy and of what age and mileage. -
2008 Peugeot 308 - 'Expert advice' Peugeot 308 cambelt life 13 Oct 2013 (Forum)
Modern cam belts are tough enough to last the life of the engine unless one of the things it drives seizes. The 15yr old 129,000m one on my Audi still looks large and tough enough to drive a BMW bike! -
Seat Exeo ST - Sound advice freely given - thanks HJ 30 Apr 2013 (Forum)
Just wanted to say a really big thank you to HJ for the really excellent advice he gavce me when I needed to purchase a second-hand estate car and was tempted to go for a 4-5 year old Audi A4 Avant. His general advice was, and I paraphrase here - 'if you're not too bothered about having the status symbol four rings on your radiator grill, go get a Seat Exeo ST'. Well, he was absolutely spot-on. -
Has anyone got a 'Q' car? 6 Jan 2013 (Forum)
And I do not mean an Audi, I'm refering to a wolf in sheep's clothing. In far off days this would mean a supercharged Minor, or Cortina Savage( bigger engine in normal saloon). I'd really like to buy a non-bling quick, grunty car, up to about 30k but with reasonable fuel consumption(30+), must have a nice ride and a bit of room. -
Best and safest family diesel for £4000 5 Oct 2012 (Forum)
Going back to 2wd in the ice makes me nervous so no BMW suggestions please due to the RWD lol My son is 5ft 10 so must be something quite roomy in the back - I hate small cars anyway :-D I have looked for an AWD Volvo or Audi but too pricey to get a decent one with reasonable miles and subarus are nearly all gas guzzling petrols What should I spend my hard earned cash on? Thanks :-) -
VW Golf TDi - VW Golf TDI 1.9 Vs 2.0 - any real difference? 8 Sep 2011 (Forum)
The 2.0 tdi looks far better on paper but seems to have a sportier setup and am looking for comfort rather than harsh suspension. Also, after looking at Audi 2.0 tdi's track record, there seems to be complaints about oil pump failures with this VAG engine, whereas the 1.9 105bhp seems pretty good. Any comments greatly appreciated. -
Vauxhall Signum - Clutch related whine? 22 Aug 2011 (Forum)
Am assuming it's the clutch, my experience of the Vauxhall is that components aren't built to last like the Subaru and Audi that preceded it. Is it likely to be anything else? Cheers -
SEAT Leon - Seat Leon 1.9 TDI SE 110 - Lack of power 25 Mar 2011 (Forum)
This is my first TDI so I'm not really sure what to expect but this just doesn't seem right. Also, my sister has an Audi A3 TDI that has a distinctive turbo whistle/whine but this is not noticeable on the Leon, should it be? Cheers. -
BMW 3 Series E36 - BMW 318 TDS advice 27 Sep 2010 (Forum)
If they are reliable what kind of milage would be the top range before I would start getting seriously expensive problems etc? Or would an Audi A4 TDI be a safer bet? I dont want to go the petrol route with these as I have found in the past that diesels seem to be reliable I.E my golf and the 106 1.5 I had before. Sorry to ramble -
best feature in any of your cars 17 Jul 2010 (Forum)
Or perhaps the Dolby Surround option on the Volvo S80 stereo (oh, Radio 2 was never the same again!)? Or the solar powered aircon in the Audi S8 that keeps running after you switch your engine off? Or the electric boot close button on the inside of the Peugeot 607 (my friends got tired of that party trick, but I didn't!)? For me, it has to be the electric memory seat systems that store complete seat and mirror and steering wheel settings for multiple drivers. -
Skoda Octavia II (2004 - ) - Skoda Options / Kit 11 Feb 2010 (Forum)
It doesn't seem like you can configure these models at all? For all Skoda do right (inc. beating Audi's A4 by 7k for the 2.0 TFSI engine), their website is *not* one of them. -
Do 4x4s Alter Cognitive Behaviour ? 18 Dec 2009 (Forum)
However first thing this morning a saw, in just a couple of miles, 4 or 5 drivers in 4x4's (mixture of Discoveries, Audi Q7 and BMW X5), driving as if it was 25 degrees and hadn't even rained for weeks ! No I dont care a bit if they wrap themselves around a lamp post, but its a different story if they take someone out with their huge hunk of metal by driving like this. -
Spook's Wheels 10 Dec 2009 (Forum)
On this current bang-bang-shoot-shoot-good-triumphs-over-evil thingy the car allocation is interesting. Good guys - Lexus saloons - image message...solid dependable establishment maybe? Bad guys - Audi Q7s - image message ....dangerous, edge of the law, dirty money perhaps? Good guy ( or girl ) who turns out to be a bad girl - Some japanese hybrid thing, possibly an Insight ? - image message....ironically duplicitous possibly? -
Most comfortable modern car . . ? 24 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I should confess a preference for the way older cars ride: I still have a '88 CX 25 GTi in the garage and would love a new 5-Series if only it rode like the last one! My worst nightmare is having to sit in any recent Audi while it's moving. If we assume an arbitrary budget of 20K and no particular segment, what would you choose? -
looking for something fun 16 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Hi all I currently have an Audi a3 2.0fsi (04 plate) and I am looking to buy something faster but it must have room for the dog in the boot and my kid in the back. I have test drove Astra VXR (I liked it but other half did not, plus found it too twitchy), Ford Focus ST (other half likes it and it can fit everyone in) I think it is ok.
