  • Biggest impovement on manufactures' model change? 26 Nov 2009 (Forum)
My susequent cars only showed a slight improvement on model change : Peugeot 405 to 406, Carlton to Omega and Audi A6 to....A6. Going back to the 1950/60s, I can imagine big improvements in say a Ford Pop/Anglia (sit up and beg) to an Anglia with the reverse rake rear window. Any thoughts /experiences?
  • Number plate mystery 7 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Front page of the Manchester Evening News today told the story of a local mother and daughter who had fiddled the social out of hundreds of thousands of pounds with multiple false identities.......so far so good. The motoring link here is this, the daughter, Lorraine B**** ran an Audi TT with the number plate LOZZIE B..now I've racked the old brain cells and havn't come up with anything that might make this up...I tried a tenuous Irish LOZ 2138 but that doesn't come up on DVLA vehicle check.
  • Gaping mouths 16 Apr 2008 (Forum)
These look like the archetypal tailgaters' cars-"I'm a big fish, so move over, or I'll swallow you." Audi seem to have started the trend, now being copied by many, e.g. Ford & Peugeot. And while I'm at it, why do the recent BMWs look so sinister and nasty, particularly in the darker colours? It seems to be something about the swage lines along the sides.

  • Which small car will suit my trailer? 10 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Do I need to find a car with an unbraked towing weight of 750+ or should I be looking at the weight of the car. My current car (Audi A4) weighs 1405 kg, has unbraked 740kg and braked 1600kg and pulls the trailer easily but I am selling it and need the smallest capable car. Any suggestions please? Thanks
  • Volkswagen T4 Caravelle (1994 - 2003) - 2002 2.5TD Engine Management light-generic reader? 2 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Last time I had it done on the VW I think it was ~£70 Will the generic readers on ebay do the trick? e.g.: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VOLKSWAGEN-AUDI-SEAT-SKODA-CAR-FAULT-CODE-READER-U281_W0QQitemZ120213408937QQihZ002QQcategoryZ30921QQcmdZViewItem P.S. My brake lights didnt go off yesterday so Im thinking a dodgy switch (which was exactly what it was last time).
  • Exciting new car markets 21 Jan 2008 (Forum)
With BMW stuck playing King Canute, I see that Audi have apparently joined Mercedes in capitalising on Munich's commercial constipation. Drive the Deal yesterday announced a new range of discounts on the A4. Who would be a traditional bricks and mortar franchised agent?
  • Car masking on TV adverts 3 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Hi all BR'ers Why are more or less all cars on TV adverts have their front and rears disguised in some way. Several adverts I refer (there are many more) to are the car tax one where the Audi A4 get crushed but the front and back lights and grille have been altered to hide its shape Also the the recent new ford mondeo advert which IIRC all ford cars are in the advert. The guy pushing his car (hevaily altered ford Sierra with an 04 plate on) and floats away at the end.
  • Ronin - the film 18 Sep 2006 (Forum)
Anyway, what really annoys me about all films is the way that they ignore the real life potential of the cars on the screen. An Audi S8 wth nitrous injection will be more than able to pull away from a 205(!) in a few seconds. Why make a point of getting a character to demand an S8 with nitrous, if they didn't use it to its full potential.
  • Hall of shame! 12 Aug 2006 (Forum)
According to a survey by confused.com a lot of prestigious cars are involved in a disproportionate numbers of accidents - see http://cars.uk.msn.com/news/car_news_article.aspx?cp-documentid=746281 . In this "top ten" you will notice Alfa, BMW and Audi are well represented. The Managing Director of confused.com said, "...luxury and executive cars have among the highest accident rates because they are often used for long distance travel, with busy, stressed and tired executives behind the wheel."
  • Low MPG on LPG Autogas car? 18 Jul 2006 (Forum)
I must commend you all on the mass of motoring knowledge you have. I have an LPG converted car. The car is a 1984 B reg Audi Coupe 2.o Injection 5 Cylinder. When I bought the car it was already intalled with the LPG kit. The problem is I only get around 140 miles (local miles) to 60 litres of gas. According to my calculations thats about 10mpg on LPG.
  • Are older cars more reliable? 21 May 2006 (Forum)
It's as tough as old boots, and still looks much better than new cars these days (looks wise). Everytime I go and post things like " thinking of buying a mk5 golf, or mk4 or a new audi a3" people tell me not to bother.. Don't do it they say, you'll regret it. Regret it?? On a car worth on average 15k???!! So here I am, putting off the purchase of a new car. I've got my old R reg golf, No air con, no ABS, no sat nav, in act not very much but the essential: a good strong engine.
  • Rear brake caliper problem - Mazda 323 4 Apr 2006 (Forum)
This is either a 5p O-ring or a whole new caliper - having had to replace the same caliper on my even older Audi a while back suggests the latter, but I'd welcome any inside knowledge. It does seem that handbrakes and rear discs don't really mix - the only car I've had so far with rear discs that have behaved was a Citroen GS, whose handbrake operated on the front (inboard) discs, and had a separate mechanism and pads for the handbrake.
  • Product placement in films 24 Jan 2006 (Forum)
IIRC Ford also supplied 4x4's for Jurassic Park. Then of course there are the 'concepts' produced by Audi for I,Robot; and Lexus in Minority Report. Is this outlay by the manufacturers really worth it? It must cost mllions, but how do they quantify a return on their investment? -- let me be the last to let you down....

  • Equipment for driving in Europe 8 Jun 2005 (Forum)
In Germany you are required to carry spare fuel on the autobahns, but you aren't allowed to take it in to Europe in the Tunnel. 3. Spare bulbs, even if you can't fit them without a vist to a garage (Audi among others) 4. Fluorescent jackets, pssibly one for each occupant of the car. 5. Warning triangles, some countries require 2.
  • Tyre Wear 1 May 2005 (Forum)
I once got 90K from a set of Michelin X tyres fitted to a Beetle that was driven flat out everywhere. Even 40K from a set of Continentals on an early Audi 100. Now I am pushed to get 15K on a Golf GTI turbo or SWBBO's Yaris Verso. Daughter's Polo gives similar mileage. Not complaining, merely commenting! That said years ago a pal scrubbed out a set of front cross ply tyres on a Mini-van in 1,500 miles - driven vigorously on minor roads in Pembrokeshire.

  • Big cars - why would you need one? 3 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Sat in an Audi A8 the other day. Quite nice, but made me think 'Why would anyone want a car this big?' Cars like the A8, 7 series, S-class, etc use loads of fuel and are unwieldy. One-up, it's like sitting in an empty concert hall; hardly involving.
  • Honda Civic Type S v. Mercedes A-class 31 Mar 2004 (Forum)
(I still think the Skoda Fabia vRS is ideal for her needs, but she won't be seen in one. And she's not having my Audi A4 Avant 2.5 TDI - it's the best car of the 15 I've had in 35 years!) David Duvall
