  This car sat for about 5 years without being started. I fitted a fresh battery, it started in about 8 seconds. I drove it about 1/2 a mile and put it back in the garage. I noted that fuel gauge showed very empty. Zero needle movement. A few days later someone else attempted to start it.

  A slight issue after a 12 hour shift though - I'd left the sidelights on (used to auto lights, you see) and returned to a flat battery. Ill see over the next few days how the battery is. If needed it's £40 from ECP for a new one.  So, for little more than one month's payment for a lease car, I have a functioning banger.

  Always-on is, however, extra wear on the old radiator fan and I'm likely to forget to disconnect it and flatten the battery  The overheating has happened before and if it keeps happening I'm going to bust the head gasket, (traditionally fragile on these 3-cyl engines), assuming I havn't already Last time I fixed it by re-making the connection to the engine temperature sensor which controls the fan relay.

  When the driver's door is opened, even with the lights off, there is a two-tone warning sound which I think is the lights-on warning, and the battery runs down over a period of days, suggesting something is ON, though nothing seems to be. When the ignition key is turned after the car has been idle, the dash display shows "ECO-MOD" which is the annoying mode it goes into to save battery power if you try to use the radio for more than 20 minutes without running the engine!

  Right, i changed my alterntor because it was failing, fitted a used used one the battery light was still on, done all the checks 3 pin plug was ok check the red wire for connectivity all was good. This was charging better than my last alternator was put it under load and it dropped below 12v and never raised to i was happy it was the alternator and was organising to get another sent out(budget as very low on cash at mo).

  Doing the battery disconnect and radio code made no difference. It has not run since. Sorry for long intro, but its been that sort of job and internet search seems to be bogged down with immobiliser lights flashing or no fuel.

    The Infos Menu states “GPS : 0 Sat” and the Battery voltage flucturates.   I have removed fuses 77 and 57 from the rear fuse box.

  My thinking was that if the turbo looks OK then the MAP sensor could be faulty, I took it off, cleaned it and replaced it and disconected the battery for half an hour to clear any faults. Reconnected battery and no faut, engine runs fine. Next day fault is back, my thought is to replace the MAP sensor, any other suggestions?

  Checked it over before going into work for the day and it all seemed fine, thought it must have been a dodgy gauge/sender. That evening, totally flat battery. RAC man came and eventually got enough juice into the battery to start it but it was draining continually. Pulled a fuse out and halted the drain, got home and checked what this fuse was and it was the diesel preheat circuit.

  Any idea if I'm on the right path? We've had the car for 9 years and I can't remember ever having put a new battery on it, if its breaking down could it be the cause of the problem? Thanks in advance for any help

  It will not even turn over now, the power is there but the key just turns and its still dead. He has checked the battery and its not that. I really don't know what else we can try to get the car working and we are really desperate as I recently had another baby (hence the getting the Voyager) and now we are unable to go out as a family!

  Hi all. So i have a VW Golf 1.9 TDI 1999 and the other day the battery dies. so i got the AA out and they used thier booster to charge the battery and everything was fine until i realised 2 things. 1 - the electric windows do not work and 2 - the central locking does not work either.

    He suggested £280ish for the fuel regulator and around £100+ for an airflow sensor. The battery was bosch silver so was under its 5 year warranty. My question is do I need to get parts from the dealer only as the mechanic doesnt trust aftermarket parts? If not where should I be looking to get them.

  This problem started (or got very considerably worse) after we disconnected the battery to work on the elctric windows and then reconnected the battery. May be a red herring, but may be relevant? We have changed the temperature sensor , the plus and HT leads, and finally the Mass Airflow sensor.

  It ran fine as long as I didn't activate the indicators, which acted as a handy 'kill-switch.' It then gave up the ghost again 25 yards from my garage. The garage mechanic disconnected the battery and left it inside over the weekend. On Monday he went to examine what he and the AA man thought must be two wires rubbing in the steering column somewhere, reconnected the battery and hey presto, the headlights readjusted themselves and the car started first time, no problems.

  I left it and returned the next day and the resevoir was still full. I know it will need a new battery but have no expierience other than changing tyres as to fixing cars. Any ideas what may be wrong just to give me an idea of the possibilities I may be looking at would be appreciated. Thank you Matt PS: It's diesel if that has any relevance.

  Engine turns over and you can hear it wants to go but won't catch and fire up even when I connect my jumpstart battery booster. Sometime if I leave it an hour it will start ok. Battery is good and spark is evident. Without exception if I tow it for a bump starts it starts ok after 25 yards and runs fine immediately.

  Fuse now fitted with a pushbutton to press before starting car, until I can resolve problem. When battery went flat during investigation speedo would sit just off end stop and work. This stopped when battery charged. Where is the speedo interface unit? is this built into the dash panel. There is not a direct connection between the black socket and the speedo meter movement on the dash panel.

  Now I'm assuming the controls stopped working so someone hacked a wiring from the starter to the fan with a relay to stop it draining the battery and that the fan was therefore likely to be always on and hence burnt out? Thoughts? Is this normal wiring? Can I unhack it? Assuming a new fan is required regardless. Ta in advance M.

  I charged my battery up full and tried again but still nothing. Can any of you guys help me out in what the problem coulf be? thanks Gaz
