  • Better looking estates 20 Jul 2003 (Forum)
What estate cars look better than the saloon or hatch they are based on. My list is Rover 75, New Avensis, Alfa 156, most BMW touring(s), most volvos, new mondeo. And I always loved the look of the old rover 3.5 when they had the non standard estate conversion.
  • Historical Help wanted 24 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Are there any experts out there that have heard of a firm called Bickley Motors. They were active in S London, 1920ish, making bodies for RRs and other chassis. I ask because the owner, a Mr Levett, was my Grandfather, I now have no family that were around in those days to ask. I found a huge tome on coachbuilders in Waterstones but could find no mention in there.

  • Discovery Dti fuel filter warning 29 Dec 2002 (Forum)
In-Laws are visiting this weekend (non 'car' people) driving Discovery Dti on an 'S' plate. Fuel filter warning light is on, and in that wonderfully vague way of hers, sister-in-law says " oh, it's been like that for a while". They're due to return to London tomorrow (200 miles) what do people think : call the AA now?
  • changing a hub on a vectra 17 Oct 2002 (Forum)
Hi I need to replace the O/s/f hub on my 97 vectra. I'm led to believe this will be fairly straightforward- jack up car, support, remove wheel, caliper and disc, remove hub end cap, undo hub nut, swap hub and refit. Is there anything I've missed?

  • Mondeo Buyer 13 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Looking to buy a 2.0 petrol Mondeo (manual gearbox), R,S or T reg; prices seem to drop substantially when mileage is over the 100k barrier. If I buy a Mondeo with 100k miles, what major costs should I budget for over the next, say, 30k? The alternative is to buy a Mondeo at 60-70k but pay a premium to reflect the lower mileage, your comments please.

  • Mondeo T-Diesel ..MOT Failure 3 Dec 2001 (Forum)
Hi My 1989 18 Mondeo Turbo Diesel has failed the "Exhaust Analyzer" test for it`s MOT. I`ve been told to take it on a long run , driving it at high revs to "clear the exhaust out". I understand the reasoning behind this , but should I be trying/changing/adjusting anything else to get it to pass?

  • Converting to Wire Wheels 8 Apr 2001 (Forum)
I have an MGB with ordinary wheels and am thinking of converting it to Wire Wheels. Can anyone advise me of what`s involved in doing this.ie What do I have to buy and do to carry out this change.? How much will it cost for either a D-I-Y job or for a Garage to do it? Is it easy to do? ( Any forseeable problems ?)

  • BMW 1 Series E81/E87 (2004 - ) - 120D SE : 6000 mile ownership report 20 Oct 2007 (Forum)
I paid a very reasonable £11700 retail, for a 2.5 years old which had covered 55k miles. I will start with the good bits? The 120D is a fantastic driver?s car, and that begins with the superb 163 bhp chain-cam engine which delivers a combination of performance, economy and refinement which would have been inconceivable only a few years ago. It?s a winner.
  • Nissan Leaf - Refusal of Short Term Right to Reject 16 Mar 2022 (Forum)
Hello all,   I purchased a car from a dealer 5 days ago, since then I have noticed an issue with the o/s/f, making a noise. I booked it into a Nissan garage to have it looked at and received a report back that stated the front anti-roll bar bushes needed replacing and both o/s and n/s would need to be done, on top of that they also stated that the 12v battery was only at 50% capacity and there was an outstanding recall on the car.
  • Paracetamol or a comfy motor? 18 May 2010 (Forum)
Elvis Presley`s last motor was on display (want to see the shots?) and another old bloke wearing a leather jacket was speaking to me in German - not realizing in those first few seconds that I could only respond with "blow main ballast tanks" or "surrender" Translated - "American cars arf arf arf - the panel gaps - it`s not ze  Audi" Cars are nothing really are they compared with with human condition?
  • The lost art of car salesmanship 30 May 2007 (Forum)
Ruth Badger certainly had the right idea on last year's Apprentice but the two bozos (no naming or shaming unfortunately) at a MINI and at a Ford dealership somewhere in the North West of England would have been fired by Sir Alan in the warm-up. I tried to p/x my Touran for an S-max earlier this year. The "salesman" refused to give me a p/x price on my car for TWO WEEKS!!!! In the end, I decided to stick with the Ran and wait until the S-max acquires the new 2.2 diesel engine next year.
  • No fun. 8 Jan 2019 (Forum)
We can trace the decline produced family sized cars back to this point with larger blue collar models like the Omega, Vectra, Mondeo etc etc plummeting in demand as fleets sought to avoid the painful depreciation they suffered from. It’s also when we seen the decline in advertising spending. In the 80’s and 90’s we had a UK car show and smaller shows like the Scottish car show at the SECC along with small regional shows but today there’s nothing promoted by the manufacturers. Another dose of fun removed.
  • Ford Cougar (1998 - 2000) - 98 2.0 Recent Purchase, few things gone wrong 13 Feb 2010 (Forum)
The garage mechanic thought it possible if they were not fitted right (not enough grease???). Front N/S CV joint has rusted through and snapped, killing an ABS (reluctor??) ring. Rear N/S wheel bearing has gone completely. Having just checked the MOT history it was advised there was 'play' on the bearing on a MOT failure 6 days before the dealer resubmitted it and got it passed.
  • Removing remains of LIFE from metallic paint 3 Jul 2009 (Forum)
The seem innocuous enough I suppose, fluting and creating a din as you listen through the open window at 5am, trying to gain consciousness with the help of a strong coffee. That`s the thing about the current heat wave.. SOUND. The town hall clock strikes five - so you know the wind is from the East, due to the volume and clarity. It`s the `nature hour.` Soon there will be the reciprocating metal roaring and snorting as engines fire up on driveways and the mammals get on with blasting their behemoths along the stained tarmac of the outer lane.
