  • Ford Focus - Up in smoke.... Some advice please 28 May 2015 (Forum)
My friends father (who is 82) purchased a 2011 Ford Focus 1.6 Sport from a Main Ford Dealer After owning it for 3 weeks he noticed the lights weren't turning off in the daytime (he was using them in automatic mode) This happened a couple of times and he booked it back in at the garage he bought it from to be checked.
  • Third party insurance wont pay 6 Feb 2015 (Forum)
Having spoken with my legal people they explained that the insurer would have to go to court to be granted article 75 by a judge which they couldnt have done in 5 hours but the insurer said they are automatically article 75 when the policy holder had the incorrect insurance. I work for Direct Line, my own insurance say they are talking rubbish as do the Motor Insurance Bureau and that they are responsible for a third party claim.
  • Toyota Aygo - Aygo semi-auto transmission problem 7 Oct 2014 (Forum)
The brake which must be pushed down to start the car had frozen; although, I was able to change the gears to put the car into drive and reverse. A local garage diagnosed it as a "gearbox problem" and said with automatic cars the gearbox cannot be repaired, just replaced. I was quoted £2200 by Toyota and £1500 by the same independent garage. Just by chance I sat in the car again and wiggled the gears (next morning) and as if by magic, the car started up!
  • Focus 1.8 TDCi - 2002 Focus 1.8 TDCi poor starting 22 Feb 2014 (Forum)
I have been using the accelerator to keep the revs at about 1000-1200rpm as soon as it starts to stop it from automatically stalling itself, which I believe occurs at about 700rpm, am I likely to cause any harm doing this (thinking lack of lubrication around the turbo bearings when first started), or am I being paranoid?
  • Tyres Optimised for Ride Quality 12 May 2013 (Forum)
Fuel economy seems to back up Continental's claims too, with an easy 50mpg obtainable (this with an automatic 'box). This wonderful ride compliance comes with a cost, though, and that is the handling, which is perfectly safe and progressive, but not exactly razor-sharp.  I don't mind that at all, because the tyres' other virtues are more important to me, but anyone wishing Nurburgring handling finesse should steer clear of the EcoContact 5 tyres.
  • Seat leon - Engine cutting out 26 Apr 2013 (Forum)
Last Septembe I bought a 12 Plate Seat Leon 1.6 Economtive. After a short while the engine started cutting out on me (not the normal automatic stop/start). Every time I took it in to the dealer, I was told that the fault was registering as a sensor fault. They never changed the sensor as they said there was nothing wrong with it, it was actually out of alignment which caused the engine to cut out whilst driving.

I don't want us to tighten up on student visa's or work permits for skilled people from outside the EU while unlimited unskilled labour has automatic right of settlement here by virtue of an EU passport. I don't want us to have to turn away good people so as Cameron can eventually hit his target. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-21614086
  • Saab 9-5 1.9 TDi Vector Diesel Estate - New Car 3 Jan 2013 (Forum)
It would be nice if it didn't have a boot lip to make it easier putting things in (and the dogs to get in) I don't really think Diesel is suitable for him anymore as his regular driving is barely 10 miles a day (divided over a weeks worth of driving) and the I'm concerned the current car is not that far away from having some major service costs due to very short journeys as its recently eaten a couple of batteries due to literately driving to the shops 1mile away and back again. As well as his 2 requirements I'd also like it to be Smaller, Economical, Automatic, Parking Sensors & Cruise Control. Any suggestions to replacements?
  • Choose A4 or Volvo or Lexus or Subaru 10 Oct 2012 (Forum)
Another reason is that i run few mileage per year(around 4000-5000 mile) and will plan to run it for around 3 years, then i decide to choose petrol one. Automatically gear box is must becasue sometimes my wife will use it. I have gatered the following information posted by dealership as follows: 1.(Auto,Petrol)Volvo V50  2006 (06 reg)  2.
  • Hidden insurance costs 26 Apr 2012 (Forum)
So, I phoned my insurers to ask when I would receive my next certificate. They said 7 to 10 days after the automatic renewal date of the 28th. I could get it quicker, however, if I paid a £9 fee for them to use a 1st class stamp! After registering my amazement, they made an alternative suggestion - I could tax the car online about 24 hours after the insurance renewal.
  • Lexus, BMW - Coming out of a company car to an allowance 1 Apr 2011 (Forum)
I'd also have to get a 3rd party warranty with one of these as I wouldn't fancy BMW level repair bills if something major happened. Criteria are that it has to be automatic and good for a reasonablt long cruise and low cabin noise is a big bonus.  I will be driving about 60-70 miles per day to and from the office. It would be great to get people's input here and hear any other suggestions, I had though about a Passat but after reading about DSG gearbox problems I have been rather put-off.
  • Difficulty finding the right car spec 22 Sep 2009 (Forum)
I would like a Citreon C5 with the hydroelastic suspension which means that it has to be the Exclusive model.I also wish it to be petrol and manual. They only do a 2.0 litre petrol automatic in Exclusive trim.Ie no manual gearbox for the model i want. Next car i looked at was a Honda Accord. My requirements are that i want a soft suspension. The GT version is perfect looking with all the toys but only comes with 17" alloys and sport suspension(ie hard). They make the lower model with 16" wheels and standard suspension but non of the toys and body kit which i would like.
  • The last golden-ish age of car choice? 13 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Considering a period - of less than 10 years - from the late 60s into the early 70s, and merely considering small-medium family cars, there were such models as the: Alfasud (flat 4) Austin 1100 (hydrolastic suspension and great packaging) Citroen GS (air-cooled flat 4 and hydropneumatic suspension) Daf 66 (continuously-variable automatic transmission via rubber belts) Fiat 128 (transverse engine with end-on gearbox) Ford Escort/Cortina (utterly conventional) Hillman Imp (rear inline engine canted over almost on its side) Morris Minor/Traveller (from 1948 / part timber-framed) NSU Ro80 (wankel) Renault 10, 16, 12 (respectively, engine: rear, behind front axle, ahead of front axle) Simca 1000 (inline rear engine) Triumph Herald (separate chassis) VW Beetle (air-cooled rear flat 4) Wartburg Knight (3 cylinder 2-stroke) In the above list - they weren't all good, but BY GUM there was a heck of a range to choose from!!
  • Honda Jazz/Fit (2008 - ) - Jazz - iShift 28 May 2009 (Forum)
I have had my Jazz iShift for 1 month now. I previously had the Jazz CVT. I read the reports about this type of automatic and was somewhat apprehensive. I test drove the ishift and I felt that yes it was different but I could get use to it. The first few days were disconcerting. It was very jerky. However I soon adapted my driving style - the CVT was very "press and go" - and I am very happy with the car.
  • Future advances in car technology 9 May 2009 (Forum)
I would imagine BMW or Mercedes having a camera device which will actually scan and 'read' road signs and automatically adjust the speed of the car accordingly with the ability to override the speed limiter with a dab of the accelerator similar to cruise control. Speedometers will get larger and there won't be the need for rev counters anymore.
  • What would you buy? 30 Nov 2008 (Forum)
So assuming that I have a budget of £15,000, what would you buy bearing in mind the following aspects: - I drive 9,000 miles each year in mostly suburban Manchester; I would prefer an automatic; I need four doors and seat four people in comfort; I demand air-con, electric and heated mirrors, electric windows and remote central locking. I would like Bluetooth or equivalent built in; Comfortable ride and excellent driving position, with easy access; All these are easy.
  • Citroen C1 (2005 - ) - Have you driven one? 1 Jun 2008 (Forum)
I wonder if the better equipped models deal with these issues (well some of the them)? Overall, a five door automatic version would suit me quite well if it had a/c, radio controls on the steering wheel, you could get into the boot without requiring the key and I could get comfortable more quickly.
  • New car for Mother-in-Law 14 May 2008 (Forum)
Hi, The time's come for the Mother-in-Law to get rid of her ageing Corsa, and she'd like me to find her a replacement. Criteria are (not very exciting I'm afraid) * Automatic * Easy to drive and park, she's a fairly tentative driver * Compact, but enough space to carry her 3 young grandchildren, so 3 proper rear seatbelts very handy, and 5 doors * Easy to get in and out of, she's not very nimble these days * Low-maintenance, reliable, hassle-free * She does a few motorway miles, so must be able to cope out of town The following do not matter!
  • Cumbria to Kent, not a usual BR thread 25 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Lake District to Kent and back on a single tank of fuel -- not bad for a (very) large car with an automatic gearbox and a high average speed. MTC
  • Legacy Turbos - Buying/Running 19 Mar 2007 (Forum)
    (C) How does one spot a "thrashed one" - they cosmetic condition looks fantastic, and I know the legacies are supposed to be very robust, so would presumably wear well even if they were driven hard. (D) Most are automatics (which is what I'd go for) but does the auto-box handle the power, or will an auto-box rebuild not be far-away ? (E) What is the insurance situation like ? I'm a 35yo single male, living on the edge of SW London/Surrey, thankfully have a lower-risk suburban Surrey postcode - are we talking £1000 a year premiums ?
