New Car 3 Oct 2010 (Ask HJ)
I have just purchased a brand new Mini from BMW. I opted out of BMW seal&protect and took it to my reputable detailing company for a seal&protect. This... -
The British car industry's finest hour? 17 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Range Rover - A relevant concept when new, corrupted by the lifestyle SUV fad and luxury car pretentions. 5. BMC Mini - Very innovative and of the moment, but grossly over-rated and should never have lasted so long. Cult status to blame. 4. BMC 1100/1300 - Everything that was good about the Mini, but in a bigger and more relevant package. -
Yaris D4D vs Golf TDI 130 12 Jul 2003 (Forum)
I own a Golf TDI 130 5 door bought new in January 2002 from Motorhouse 2000, it\'s an EU import. I bought the Golf over the Christmas hols in a hurry after I rejected my new MINI Cooper, following legal advice. But that\'s another story! The early BMW Mini\'s were not good news... To put this into context, I commute 40 miles a day to work and back. While I am very pleased with the Golf (it goes hard and it\'s very solidly built), I have done my sums and worked out that a company lease car could work out cheaper. -

Drivers on miniroundabouts - Undertaking and overtaking on junctions 14 Jan 2016 (Forum)
2. Went to get fuel at a large supermarket and on the main road entrance there is a painted mini-roundabout, as I was turning, indicating a yoof overtook me and then when he realised he was going to hit me tooted (a lot) and then turned into the petrol station and proceeded to nonchalantly fuel up. -

Distinctive motoring `sniffs` 10 Apr 2010 (Forum)
Well you do sniff at some motoring things, don`t you? ;-) Duckhams Q20/50 stood out as really different to other motor oils at the time I had a Mini van in 68. Not just in it`s green colour but it also smelt great. Wonder why? - I certainly don`t notice anything attractive about the smell of Mobil 1 currently. Wonder if it was a youth thing. -
No Spare. Compressor + sealant 24 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I have heard that once a tyre has had this gunge put into it a tyre company will be unwilling to repair the puncture - is this true? I am negotiating to exchange the supplied kit for a mini or normal size spare wheel. I am not too happy with the implications of having a puncture which damages the tyre in such a way that the sealant won't work or getting home but having a tyre that can't be repaired. -
What should I bid...confused! 10 Sep 2009 (Forum)
I'm planning to go to an auction tomorrow to view a Mini Cooper. It's an ex-lease car, three years old. Here's where I'm confused... Parker's guide reckon it's worth £11k, but there are a few advertised privately on Autotrader for £8k. To be honest I saw the Autotrader first and thought I might be able to buy it for £6k if I was lucky. -
Police dashing to "emergency". 21 Jul 2009 (Forum)
As the police cars overtook, oncoming traffic slowed to allow them to overtake. A few minutes later I came upon the police cars, stopped at a mini roundabout where there had been a minor bump between two cars. Although as far as I could see, the police cars were being driven in accordance with high-speed emergency driving, such driving is obviously an added risk factor on the roads and I question whether it is really necessary to drive like that on the way to a minor bump in a town street. -
FIAT Ducato Sevel X250 (2007 - ) - Reverse judder 25 Apr 2009 (Forum)
From the postings this sounds like a major problem affecting many, many vehicles, yet I have not heard a word of it before, is it a case of commercial vehicles having a very low public awareness? If this was a problem affecting the Mini, or a flash BMW, I suspect it would get a mention on Top Gear, or even the main News on TV, but who fights for the commercial boys? TV Mechanics 9 Dec 2008 (Forum)
OK - I admit to watching last night's Coronation Street. Girl has mini, having rouble. Tyrone the mechanic sits in it, says - no wonder you're having trouble, your oil warning light is flashing. he asks "when did you last check your oil". "Never", she says. So he immediately revs up the engnie then says "let's take the car for a spin". -
Stupid double rear fog lights 2 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I suppose it's so large it wouldn't notice someone ploughing into the back because they didn't notice the brake lights come on. Also, new Peugeot, although these are quite well separated from the brake lights. Also Mini. Why does stupidity persist? Is it because these cars are assembled in intellectually challenged English factories? Anyway, that's three from me - please add to create an HJ blacklist! -
Do most cars sound the same these days? 2 Sep 2008 (Forum)
When I was a lad (late 70's to early 80's) I could tell pretty much what car was approaching just from the sound it made. From the whine of a Mini/metro gearbox and exhaust trump of a Moggy Minor to the whine of Pinto engined Fords and rattle of tappety Chrysler/Talbots I could identify pretty much anything. These days, apart from chavved up Suburus or the occasional multicylinder job pretty much all you can hear as a car passes in the street is the roar of the tyres. -
How economical could a car be made 22 May 2008 (Forum)
Some people in the group I socialised with got incredibly good fuel economy by modifying small cars with the BMC 'A' series engine, such as Minis, Minors and the odd A35. The basics seem to be a gas flowed head, small (was it 3/4" SU?) and raised gearing. Engines are more fuel efficient these days but this is offset by cars being much larger and heavier. -

Designing `common sense` road features 15 Jan 2008 (Forum)
I once went down south and and ended up passing through a place that had a very complex multi, mini, roundabout system all connected together. Drivers no doubt well versed in its intricate rights of passage seemed to have no problems despite seeming a little jug like on detecting my slow, careful courteous (Yorkshire) attempt to fit in with them. -
Daihatsu Fourtrak (1985 - 2000) - Fourtrak and Trooper - why no more? 6 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Many farmers and horsey types saw them as alternatives to Discoverys and swb Defenders for towing and there are plenty still around in either station wagon or van guise. Izuzu now sell the Rodeo pick up and Daihatsu have the Terios mini SUV, but neither company has come up with a directly replacement. Given the ongoing popularity of 4x4s, I am curious why Isuzu and Daihatsu have never launched replacements. Can anyone shed any light on this?
