  • Peugeot 207 - Braking fault 18 Feb 2021 (Forum)
Obviously it’s an old car etc I’m just not sure if and how are there more faults really? As it was running OK with just the abs braking system fault until went into the garage. Any advice would be really grateful
  • Toyota Yaris - sticky/locking brakes 23 Oct 2020 (Forum)
My wife bought a 2nd hand Toyota recently. When driving it at low speed or in slow moving traffic it locks the brakes almost just by looking at the pedal.  I only have to press a little for them to come on fully I can't seem to be able to press and have the car slow down properly it's all or nothing. It is really annoying I depress the pedal by an inch and its OK but not enough to stop the car, then a few mm more and they 'slam' on like I've really 'stepped on the brakes' so a really jerky ride, and she hates it and makes her sick.
  • Vauxhall Corsa D - Brakes grinding when hot 27 Mar 2017 (Forum)
I'm not hard on the brakes, but they make a horrible noise once warmed up. Click the links for photos of the discs, which are not shiny. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y168/David5032/IMG_0081_zpsa6vywlt1.jpg http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y168/David5032/IMG_0080_zpsagsp6rg8.jpg Please can anyone advise what could be making the noise?
  • Mercedes 220 diesel - Dual clutch transmission 31 May 2016 (Forum)
The Mercedes has a “Hold” position, which disengages the transmission by an additional short stab on the footbrake after stopping and allows the foot to be taken off the brake pedal with the engine running, rather like neutral position on a manual gearbox. However, if I hold the brake pedal down, the engine continues to run and the car is stationary.
  • Ford Fiesta ecoboost - new brake discs, pads & shocks-price? 17 May 2016 (Forum)
I have changed the tyres but haven’t had any other work needed. At my last service the mechanic recommended new front brake discs and pads and new shock absorbers. He has quoted me £840 for a full service and the work done (a full service is £280, the brakes and pads are £250, shocks £310), I wondered whether this was a reasonable quote for this work?
  • Toyota IQ - Used car deposit 31 Aug 2015 (Forum)
Hi I put a deposit down with a credit card, went see the car but the brake disc were very corroded and they said it had full service history, but it was missing a service. They said they will check the brakes before I collect the car and give me a new MOT, i took pictures and showed to a mechanic and he said that should be changed.
  • Ford Fiesta Saloon 2004 Petrol - Front brake rattling 12 Aug 2014 (Forum)
I have this strange rattling sound coming from the front offside wheel area, it's more obvious when I go over small bumps in the road. I notice that if I brake gently it stops the rattle, also after I brake I get a slight pad rubbing, maybe this is connected? I've had the wheel off but couldn't see any problems except the disc moves a bit, I assume  the disk is held tight by the wheel nuts?
  • Ford Focus Estate Mk1 - Replace Front Brake Hose 21 Nov 2012 (Forum)
Need to replace drivers side front brake hose for MOT, have seen various descriptions on the web and dont have a manual, questions are   1 What size spanners are required, assume ring spanners would be best. 2 When bleeding, do all wheels have to be done or just front 2, approx how much brake fluid likely to need?
  • Servicing my Fiesta 20 Feb 2012 (Ask HJ)
I have recently bought a 3 year old Fiesta 1.6 petrol engine with 9000 on the clock, is there anything I should get double checked i.e brake fluid, oil,...
  • BMW 318 Touring (2004) - Brake sensor warning light not clearing 14 Jun 2011 (Forum)
Brake sensor light came on recently as rear pads were worn.  Had the pads and sensor replaced but the sensor light would only clear until the car moved away then come back on.  I took it back to the garage (national tyre, exhaust & brake chain, not BMW) and asked them to replace the sensor as I assumed this was faulty.
  • Can I fit smaller wheels to my Land Rover Freelander? 14 Aug 2010 (Ask HJ)
I have a Land Rover Freelander with 18-inch rims. In order to fit winter tyres, can I put on 16-inch or 17-inch rims on, or not because of the brakes etc?...
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 02 1.6 brakes knock 6 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Is this something I can rectify my self rather than troop all the way back to the mechanic who cant look at it until next weekend. Really want this sorted as I dont want the brakes to be unsafe and its also got its MOT due Any advice would be great Thanks
  • Mazda 323 (1998 - 2003) - 03 1.6 Brake caliper - replacement isn't correct 10 Feb 2009 (Forum)
My Mazda 323 2003 1.6 GSi is currently in an ATS garage. The front driver's side brake calliper has failed. The replacement part that ATS sourced wasn't the right one, and they were having problems finding the correct type. So I bought a recon calliper from Brake Parts Superstore in Rotherham, but that also isn't correct.
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - Plastic brake pipes - safe? 24 Oct 2008 (Forum)
My dads car (same car) had the brake pipes done last year and they are metal all neatly put round the fuel tank, on my car they seem to come from under the sill. Is this dodgy workmanship? I am going to have a good look under the car on saturday when my machanic puts it on the ramp but until then?
  • Honda Civic UK (1995 - 2000) - 1996 Concealed Rusting Brakepipes (& Rover 400) 17 Jun 2008 (Forum)
A word of warning for anyone with a 5-door Civic and I'm fairly sure this will also apply to the later model, 95 onwards Rover 400. I suffered a brake failure this morning due to a rusting brake pipe blowing. The car passed its MOT last year without them being mentioned. A post mortem at the garage revealed that where the rear brake pipes run under the car they are covered by a plastic casing which renders them all but invisible.
  • Volkswagen Golf IV (1998 - 2004) - 03 1.9td Brake Fluid changes - £50! 14 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Can anyone tell me the frequency of which brake fluid should be changed? Is it two or three years? My car is booked in for a service, but got a call from the garage asking if I want brake fluid changed as they havent got a record of it being done in two years.
  • Renault Clio II (1998 - 2001) - Brake fluid type / general fluid change discussion 6 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Any thoughts? I thought about doing the Mondeo brake fluid at the same time (DOT4 Ford spec ESD-M6C-57-A) though the dealer only charges £39.99 inc, its a no brainer, booked in for next week. Regards.
  • Ford Focus brake pad wear indicator? 1 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Does anyone know whether a 4 year old Focus has a warning light (or possibly audible warning) for front pad wear? Reason for asking is that my Sister-in-Law's car failed it's MOT allegedly for worn front brake pads. The Ford dealer insisted that the pads would need replacing for the car to pass the MOT. The old pads were 'unfortunately' disposed of before the hefty bill was paid. There was no sign of braking problems or warnings before the MOT.
  • Astra 1.7 TD '98 - Brake pedal creep 2 Nov 2006 (Forum)
Recently noticed when stopped in traffic, particularly facing downhill, my brake pedal slowly creeps down to the floor. I know its not really good practice to sit with footbrake on and not use handbrake, but who doesn't? Checked fluid levels several times in last 2 weeks and doesn't seem to be losing any and no sign of any obvious "damp" patches around wheel cylinders.
