  • Alfa GT 3.2 V6 - Problems with new(to me) car dealer won't fix! 12 Feb 2011 (Forum)
I've currently wasted about 12 hours of my time going to and from garages and in fault tracking which has prevented me from working as well. The web site of the garage states that all cars are hpi clear, mot'd, serviced where needed, have a 140 point check, are professionally valeted and come with a 3 month/3000 mile warranty for peace of mind. The garage will not pay for anything (except for the £80) saying that it's just normal wear for a car of that age.
  • I bought a car six months ago and have now discovered the air con doesn't work - what can I do? 27 Jul 2018 (Ask HJ)
I bought a second hand car from a local dealer in January. In July I switched the aricon for the first time and found that it is not working. I got it...
  • What has caused a major engine failure in my Fiat 500 Multijet diesel? 30 Nov 2013 (Ask HJ)
In 2008 I went to a Fiat dealership and, with the help of the car salesman, configured a 500 Multijet diesel to my 'needs' and to a very high spec. Having...
  • Can I reject my Vauxhall Astra Estate? 30 Jul 2010 (Ask HJ)
You say "the supplier must be given three chances to rectify the fault for which the goods are rejected and must have failed to do so". Does this have...
  • Renault Scenic - recurring probem with used car in Scotland 14 Jan 2013 (Forum)
My Sister travelled the 100miles by Train to collect the car and when she got there the dealer wouldn't let her take the car away unless she signed a letter waiving her rights to any further warranty claim. As my Sister is the sole carer for my other (wheelchair confined) Sister, and my elderly Mother, she reluctantly signed and drove off.
  • My son bought a Ford Mondeo privately which has a starter motor fault - does he have any claim on the vendor? 14 Sep 2010 (Ask HJ)
My son has recently purchased privately a 2002 Ford Mondeo that was advertised as being a "very clean original genuine example of this ever popular car"....
  • Looking for cheap reliable Japanese car for my gf 14 Jan 2018 (Forum)
However this is not what you here from garages and people from the RAC who come to tow your car! I think they may only look at within warranty failures etc. We need a car which will go on for a while without too much trouble. Thanks in advance
  • Nissan Juke Suzuki Vitara - New Car Time. Juke or Vitara 23 Oct 2017 (Forum)
Anything from new to 3 years old Depending in prices . Probably rather buy new at around 14k than 1 year old at 12.5. No need to think about why car was sold. Get full 3 years warranty. Looking to keep the car long term. I,m wondering if the Nissan 1.2 engine with turbo is likely to be reliable or the 1.6 non turbo Vitara might be a better bet.
  • Bought a used car from a dealer, but it keeps braking down - can I demand a refund? 19 Sep 2013 (Ask HJ)
We brought a 2001 Volkswagen Polo two months ago from a dealer. After one month it broke down with a clutch problem, we informed the dealer and he said...
  • Audi Q5 gearbox failed after 24k miles 20 Sep 2016 (Ask HJ)
I've owned an 2009 Audi Q5 since new. It has covered 26,000 miles and serviced by our local main dealer to schedule. In late 2015, we noticed issues with...
  • New year, new car 9 Dec 2021 (Forum)
Does not seem as well regarded by the press but owners seem to love them. All 4 have good warranties, Hyundai 5 years, Kia 7 years and the Toyota and Lexus 10 years. A bit immaterial since we only intend to keep 4 years but it must be an advantage selling a car with warranty left. Obviously need to view and drive but is it best to forget this lot and simply buy a Skoda Scala 1.5 TSi Dsg SE-L at £19900 OTR.
  • Most - Let the sun shine on in! 20 Sep 2018 (Forum)
For my new car there was no factory sunroof option, and anyway when I purchased the car the dealer had a special offer, a new car laden with lots of useful toys nearly 40% off list price - and that’s also important to me too.
  • Sensible Car up to about £3000 28 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Criteria are: smallish, reliable, cheap to run, not too ancient, power steering (something the current car lacks), comfortable for driver and 11-year-old daughter, and likely to survive being used for frequent short journeys. Her previous car was an Escort, and she doesn't want anything larger than that, so there's probably no point in recommending Mondeo-sized vehicles without a compelling argument to persuade her that such cars aren't significantly harder to drive and park than superminis.
  • Cab runneth over 7 Feb 2009 (Ask HJ)

  • Sick Alfa 156 2.0 TS Man 9 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Main problem was car vibration all the time, through the front of the car and instability at speed. Dealer agreed with problem and decided to 4 wheel align the car 4 times, no improvement. Ordered replacement front and rear shocks. 5. 24 months old fitted front and rear shocks.
  • New car privacy concerns 23 Jul 2025 (Forum)
I’m also concerned about how telemetry data might affect warranty claims or even lead to penalties for speeding based on my driving patterns.  The new & upcoming EU and UK Data acts that include provisions for vehicle telemetry data, also does not instill confidence on how our car telematics data is going to be used by external organisations.
  • any - another one of those 'which car' questions! 5 Jan 2014 (Forum)
The car will be mainly used for a 15 mile commute each day (50:50 town and 50mph A road) with me taking it say once a week on a longer 50 mile round trip to work on dual carrigeway and maybe a run out at weekends.
