  • Peugeot 306 Hdi 1999 Manual - 306 irratic rough idle and varying RPM higher up 8 Feb 2011 (Forum)
If the accelerator is then held constant the revs eventually and suddenly increase to the "right" level and the engine runs smoothly.   When the accelerator is released, it goes back to idle and runs roughly again and the whole thing can be repeated.   I'm thinking this could be a vacuum problem, but not sure where, or maybe a fuel supply problem or possibly a sensor problem but don't really know, anyone got any ideas?
  • ford focus1.8 tdci - fuel problem, dead car 4 Feb 2011 (Forum)
Eventually got a mechanic to come tonight (6th January 11) and he managed to jump start it for about 30 seconds at a time, was running really lumpy for the few seconds and just cut out again.  He thinks it may need a ford fault reader on it (?)  Thing is, can't get it to a garage 'cos it doesn't actually run!!   Does anybody have any ideas what this fault might be?
  • any - A bargain 4x4 5 Jan 2011 (Forum)
Everyone loves a bargain and with the increase in fuel prices and likely interest rate hikes I reckon there will be some bargains 4x4s to be had. Lots of people have bought these over the last few years who cannot really afford to run them and I reckon lots of them will flood the market this year (2011). I'm giving serious though to getting one in the next few months, but to be honest I have little knowledge of whats out there so looking for some ideas.
  • Nissan micra 1.4 SE 2006 - engine management light?? 28 Nov 2010 (Forum)
my engine management light came on last week the car has been running fine no probs although it has been well over due its service, i took it to a friend to run the diagnostic to avoid the main dealer price he said that the code showed it might need a lambda sensor but might just be it needs a really good service.... so i took it to my dealer for it well needed service and MOT they said if it was the lambda sensor it would fail its MOT but it passed could it have been just in need of a good service the engine management light is still on but will that just need turning off now????
  • Hyundai i10 1.2 comfort - Starting problems on my new car 4 Oct 2010 (Forum)
My i10 is beginning to give me starting problems, intermittently. It’s a March 2010 model and only 600 miles on the clock. I mainly do short runs but have taken it on a 40 miles long run at varying speeds to give it a boost, so to speak. Still had difficulty starting this morning as it cranked for a while before starting. This has happened about 4 times in the past two weeks.

  • Ford Mondeo 1.8 Petrol LX - Mondeo Clattering noise - bearing or chain? 5 Jul 2010 (Forum)
However, I have run it past a mechanic friend today, who purely stuck his head in the engine, not carrying out any proper investigative work. He is of the opinion that the clattering sound is either one of the bearings or the chain cam.
  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 02 1.9tdi PD130 starting problems when parked 29 Jun 2010 (Forum)
Had the car from new, estate sport, 110k miles, last 2 years had problems starting when parked nose up ( only a few inches and progressively getting worse ), turns over fine after several mins cranking it starts, runs rough, feels like fuel starvation, fine after 10 seconds of running. ( has worn the starter motor out over time ) When parked nose down starts perfect every time. since problem fuel filter and fuel pipe to PD pump changed ( Known rubbing point under the main air intake tube at the back of the head ) Can not find any air or fuel leaks.
  • Citroen Saxo (1997 - 2003) - 99 1.0 Engine Hesitation 27 Jan 2010 (Forum)
I have taken a look at the previous posts about engine hesitation and i seem to think mine is slightly different, Im certainly not a car expert and im trying to figure out what is causing the following problem. When my car is damp (not cold as when we had the snow it ran fine strangely!) or hasnt been run for a day the car starts to hesitate when accelarating. After the car is run though it works fine until the car sits for maybe a day without being used at which it hesitates again, i have had a load of issues with this car already and ive done a bit of research but dont have any conclusive answers.
  • Honda CR-V II (2002 - 2006) - 06 2.2 Dipstick 4 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Is there anything special about the dipstick on the CRV ? My engine started running badly occasionally on Saturday so I stopped, checked under the bonnet and with no other signs of problems I checked the oil using the dipstick and it appeared empty. Having added 5L to it and turning the motor over for 30 secs I rechecked it and there was still nothing.
  • Peugeot 405 Diesel (1988 - 1996) - Year unknown TD - Fuel starvation - won't idle 22 Oct 2009 (Forum)
It is running on veg oil/diesel, mixed, but this problem has only recently occurred, after several months of veg oil use. It has a Bosch injector pump, which should tolerate veg oil. My gut feel is that the injector pump is partly knackered, but do BRers have other ideas?
  • Peugeot 205 (1983 - 1997) - 88 1.9 immobiliser/ignition problem 7 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Thinking my immobiliser is faulty. Problem is car won't start on occasion, every other time starts first times and runs sweet. usual trick to start is take a spark plug out turn over to see if it sparks, on first try no spark on second attempt start and runs on other 3 cylinders. Before taking a spark plug out can be trying to start for a few minutes with nothing.
  • Ford C-MAX (2003 - 2010) - 04 2.0d Charging Circuit 1 Feb 2009 (Forum)
The alternator warning light comes on when you switch the ignition on & goes off when the engine is running (i.e. just what it should do) but checking it more thoroughly with a voltmete in the cigar socket, the battery voltage gradually drops over several days and (unlike my other car & every other one I?
  • Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 1998 1.8TDi EEC V PCM 16 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Can I just put the loom and ECU in and connect it up to all the sensors and actuators on the engine and it will work?? Or, does a separate 12 volt feed need to be run to it?? It is a Ford EEC V PCM with 104 pin connector - though which wire is the 'live in' is the problem!! Where can I get a proper wiring diagram for EEC V engine looms/ecu's?? Cheers, Stuart.
  • Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - 05 2.0SDI Possible fuel pump problem. 12 Jan 2009 (Forum)
Now whenever I try to start the car it turns for about 10-15 seconds then starts - once I push down the accelerator the car cuts out. When the car is finally started it will run for about 2-3min then cuts out. (only runs if I dont push down on the accelerator) At a guess, could this be the fuel pump? Is this something that happens to Golfs? My SDI has only done 55k miles.
  • Vauxhall Corsa B (1993 - 2000) - 98 1.0 Injector problem? 5 Oct 2008 (Forum)
The mother-in-law has a 98 1l Corsa that she keeps at ours for when she visits. It has two problems: * Speedo doesn't work (think this is the sensor on the gearbox) * Runs slightly rough at idle. When running there is intermittent hesitation which I can best describe as if trying to drive an older car with the choke out. She has taken it to the local garage who have 'put it on the computer'.
  • Vauxhall Vectra C (2002 - 2008) - 2003 Vectra Replacement 13 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Any ideas what would be a good economical car, diesel and with more economical service costs! Needs to fairly family sized etc. Or should I just run my Vectra to the ground? Mondeo? Octavia? A4? A6? not sure what the service and parts prices are like for running costs etc. so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
  • Nissan Primera (1990 - 1996) - 1995 1.6LX Advise on solving coolant loss 12 Sep 2008 (Forum)
So I have this car and wish to clean out the cooling system (i.e. drain, refill with pure water, run briefly & drain again to flush away any gunk) then refil with antifreeze & fit new thermostat before autumn sets in. Any comments on this problem and how to move forward would be appreciated.
  • Ford Fiesta (2000 - 2002) - 01 1.3 Coolant flushing and renewal 7 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Can I just check that all I need to do is open the radiator plug at the bottom of the radiator, collect everything that runs out and discard, then use a garden hose to flush it out. Then I fill with water + radflush after closing the radiator plug, turn the heating to full and run the car until the thermostat opens and the radflush penetrates the whole system.

REF: HJ's telegraph Q&A SAT 28 JUNE '08 Does any one know why an ex rental would be better run in than a car bought from a private seller? Can someone expand on HJs reply? Surely a private owner would take more care to run the car in strictly adhering to any guidelines given by the manufacturer.
