More details are coming through about Nissan's radical new British built Primera IV that finally shrugs off the dowdy looks of its Mk I, Mk II and Mk III predecessors and goes on sale from 1st March. A 'first' is the built-in closed circuit TV camera in its rear number plate surround. This is linked to the TV screen on the central instrument pod and, instead of aiding rear-parking by coloured lights or bleepers, actually lets you see what is directly behind the car.

You can already buy cars with adaptive cruise control and lane assistance – Drive Me is an advancement and improvement on this. In fact, the prototype model, which has fairly limited functionality, uses the same sensors and cameras as a regular Volvo V60. Production cars will have a much bigger suite of sensors though – high resolution cameras, lasers and RADAR, facing in all directions. These sensors will link to advanced maps of the road and GPS satellites, so the car can identify precisely where it is on the road.

Ford had originally supplied a blue Consul but the producers apparently asked for it to be replaced with one painted in a brighter colour to stand out for the camera against a drab London background. The Consul was used for the entire series one production and most of series two before being replaced by Ford with a Granada 3.0S shortly after the Consul range discontinued production in 1975.
