  • Skoda Karoq 1.5tsi DSG - One year in 5 Nov 2023 (Forum)
The (engine) oil needed a couple of hundred ml top up after 9,000 miles.  No other issues - the slow puncture went when the tyre got reversed.  The fuel cap latch needs to be lubricated every now and then as it starts to get sticky. I'm still very pleased with the cream leather interior and it's holding up well.  My wife and son like the little trays and cup holders in the back and are happy being carted around.
  • Second hand car choice - first time buyer. 10 Dec 2009 (Forum)
My dad has a Ford Focus which I have never had a problem with but I'd ideally like something a bit smaller. I'm not too fussed diesel or petrol. Here's what I've found: Golf 1.6 S FSI 52,000m 3dr £4,500 and a 5 dr for £5,250 Peugeot 207 Hatchback, 1.4 HDi S 5d 2007/07 £4,700 - now I think this one is a very good price although the ad doesn't give the mileage.
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 1999 1.8 Courier van instrument/electrical problem 7 Feb 2009 (Forum)
I am having a problem with the electrics on my van. I guess if this is a common fault it could affect other Fiesta diesel models and perhaps other Fords with the same instrument systems. A month or so ago I started noticing that some of the warning lights on the instument panel glow faintly when I'm driving. The full beam, fuel heater coil, brake warning and ABS lights have all been affected but at random and sometimes two at a time.
  • 2003 V70 2.4T chip tuning 19 Nov 2004 (Forum)
With so much recently posted about diesel chip tuning, here goes with good old benzine, but first, some history. When ordering our V70, I agonised over whether to go for 2.4T or T5. In the end, the decision came down in favour of the 2.4T because: a) Having tried both, power delivery was far more usable in most circumstances.
  • Renault Laguna II - Renault - You couldn't make it up! 13 Sep 2020 (Forum)
The engine is a direct petrol injection unit, known commonly as the IDE (for Injection Direct Essence) and coded as the F5R. The fault it suffers is that the fuel pressure regulator, which on this engine has to handle very high pressures more commonly found in diesel engines, sticks and causes the fuel pressure to rise dangerously high. When this happens, the engine management system senses the excess pressure and shuts the engine down to prevent damage or injury.
  • Are current VED rules simply killing old cars? 9 Nov 2013 (Forum)
Let me give you an example... using my own car. My car is a Volkswagen Lupo SDI. It has a 1.7 N/A Diesel Engine. It's not fast, it's not particularly fun, but it's super fuel efficient and great for my 80 miles a day, travelling to work and back. Driving carefully, you can easily achieve in excess of 75MPG.
  • My Ford Fiesta Review 8 Oct 2011 (Forum)
Im 6ft and theres more than enough headroom, and with the seat fully back im too far from the pedals so a taller driver should have no problem in the Fiesta. Driving Its no secret on here that im sceptical of small diesels, the last one i drove was an old Fiesta 1.8D and that was befitting of the term 'tragic' but im delighted to report things have changed. Started the Fiesta up and although you can tell its a diesel, thankfully its really not that obvious.
  • Vauxhall Corsa 1.3TDCI Ecoflex, 2008 - HELP!!! problems within 2 weeks of purchase!! 30 Dec 2011 (Forum)
So I went to pick the car up 2 hours later, and was told I had a whole new headlight unit fitted, and the fuel filter had been replaced. They were unable to print me an invoice, but gave me a copy of the engineers notes. It was clear that the words " replace and fit new diesel filter" had been added on by someone else, in different handwriting.
  • BMW 5-Series E61 Touring (2004 - ) - 25,000km report BMW 530d 9 Jun 2009 (Forum)
46mpg. More importantly I get around 1,000km between fill ups which justifies my decision for the diesel version over the petrol. I actually think this level of fuel efficiency is amazing for a 1 1/2 ton six cylinder 240bhp car with an automatic gearbox. The first service is looming in a few thousand kms.
  • New Car Advice/Reality Check 4 Nov 2012 (Forum)
It has 73,000 miles on the clock which after some reading here and there is a good thing suggesting lots of motorway mileage which is exacly how a car likes to be driven (concerning the DFP filters). This also leaves me £2,000 to spend on insurance (£750) and £1,250 to spend on fuel and/or unforseen circumstances. I am not sure why I picked diesel rather than petrol however this is just an example. This type of car 'compact' or 'C segment' is my preferred style of car for aesthetically speaking and practically - if I am going to drive to Europe or stay over in far away places in the future i.e. big boot, more comfortable than smaller car, can hold 4 adults (if someone wants to tag along haha).
  • Ford Mondeo - 52 Reg TDCI 130BHP Injectors or what? - HELP! 27 Jun 2010 (Forum)
One garage put it on their diagnostic machine and said all my injectors were shot - even though the injector specialist said they were fine (though my garage and the specialist had a row over my car so who knows what really happened when my car was with them!). Other suggestions are that there is a fuel delivery problem, Fuel Metering Unit is gone (common on TDCI's) and that the wiring loom within the Common Rail, has gone hard and brittle (until engine is hot and oil has softened it up, so making the necessary connections for things to work properly).
  • Mazda 6 saloon sport 165 ps petrol - Mazda 6 sport 2 ltr Petrol mpg trip report 3 Sep 2017 (Forum)
Generally around home mainly trips to and fro shopping etc. I get 43/44 mpg and that is brim to brim fuel measure, it can go down but not under 41, no commuting, avoid traveling around rush hour etc. I hope this post gives a reasonable account of running a modern 2 ltr petrol N/Aspirated large saloon, and I have stated measurements to be either 'indicated' or brim to brim,  however to recommend it for commuting I can't as I haven't.
  • Kia Sedona 2.9 CRDi - Car will not start 20 Jun 2012 (Forum)
The results he was getting at the sensor were 1.3v at pin 1, 0v at pin 2 and Ground at pin 3. I gave the garage some info i had on the 'Common Rail Diesel Fuel System' and I believe and hope that they carried out the correct checks on the harness. v) The next thing I hear from garage is that all inputs / outputs at ECU are good apart from sensor and he was going to slave in a cable from ECU to sensor and see what we get.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 01 2.0 HDi Fault code P0230 Limp Mode 16 Mar 2010 (Forum)
800 M development costs for HDi and 4 years work by two major companies. You think PSA could manage more than 77K without engine trouble. A normal diesel could ! At least design an ECU diagnosis system that can tell you the exact problem, or support DIY diagnosis without all this dealer analyser rubbish. Rant over. I have to get the bus to the supermarket.
  • Mileages and misconceptions? 25 Sep 2006 (Forum)
I'm assuming: · Corrosion and other age related problems will not be accelerated by high mileage use · Electrical systems have a lifetime measured in years and not miles · It is possible to replace mechanical systems, up to and including entire engine and transmission systems, in order to keep the car running properly If the above are true, I think there is some widespread wooly thinking on the economics behind changing a high mileage newish car. For example, my car is a common rail diesel, and therefore many people have advised me against trying to run it to very high mileages. They warn that it will need new fuel pumps, for example, by 150,000 miles, at a possible cost of £1000. This is just one cost that I will likely incur.
  • Things we didn't ask for on cars 22 Sep 2009 (Forum)
The DPF.....great idea, especially the regen cycle being so bad on many cars that it starts diluting the sump oil with Diesel. No problem I read just change it if the oil level rises too much...whaaat, we pay a lot of money for quality lubricants, with fancy ratings and don't worry if it gets diluted by half a litre or more of Diesel.
  • Volvo XC90 (II) D5 256 2016 - Volvo XC90 Diesel Significant Lack of Power & MPG 1 Jul 2025 (Forum)
Apologies for this being so long but I want to be as comprehensive as possible, not least to avoid putting well-meaning forum contributors to unnecessary...
  • Most impressed by 17 Apr 2020 (Forum)
The rev happy Yamaha designed 1600 motor had just enough power to be fun yet was more reliable, better on fuel and smoother than the bigger Ford Zetec motors only the dearer cars. I wasn’t a huge fan of the styling but the drive more than made up for it. Buy a good one now as prices are heading upwards Rover Metro K series 1.4 GTA - Yes really!
  • New car shortlist - who's going to help? 19 Jul 2007 (Forum)
I do 20,000 miles a year and I want something I actually look forward to driving each day. Probably needs to be a diesel although the difference in cost neds to be measured carefully against the fuel saving. Here's the shortlist so far in alphabetical order, though I'm of course open to other suggestions. Audi A3 2.0 TDI (A4 isn't being discounted much so is probably too expensive) - very good to drive, and steering and handling more direct than the A4.
  • Recommend Me a Car 4 Sep 2006 (Forum)
The gearbox is horrible, notchy but not in a good way, noisy when idling-think input shaft bearing is on way out. Engine is horrible, really unrefined, doesn't want to rev above 4K-like a diesel in that respect. At motorway speeds you have NOTHING left for hills, overtaking. It's really loud and sounds really stressed even at 65-75mph. It suffers from tremendous drive line shunt (all mounts checked so no idea what's causing it).
