  • 2007 Passat 2.0TDi (PD140) - PD140 wont start 27 Jun 2013 (Forum)
They confirmed that all glow plugs are lighting up, the injectors are receiving a pulse signal and the lambda sensor reads. They also checked the lift pump in the tank and it is pumping, and the injectors are receiving diesel. They bled the fuel system to ensure no air is trapped somewhere. I am really desperate and they don’t seem to find the fault. Has anyone experienced anything similar and does anyone have any suggestions where to continue looking for the fault.
  • Peugeot 206 hatchback (1998 - 2006) - 06 1.6HDI FAP DPF Removal Experiment 16 May 2010 (Forum)
Some questions I have no answers for yet, is what the ECU will do when the EOLYS fluid tank runs empty. Maybe I should try removing the magnet sensor in the fuel flap, to stop the EOLYS dosing taking place each time I fill up. Any comments would be appreciated.
  • I was sold a dangerous vehicle and have no rights? 9 Mar 2009 (Forum)
The power steering has a bad leak as do the wheel cylinders and the following is in dire need of replacing to make the vehicle safe to drive: track rod, anti-roll bar, exhaust system, front tyre, rear wheel cylinders & brake shoes, suspension mounts. It also needs the diesel injection fuel pump replaced but I understand there is no advance warning to identify a problem with this component. The total cost for getting it back on the road in a safe condition is estimated at £1,500but could be as much as £2,000, depending on whether the steering pump and a wishbone need replacing.
  • Ford Fusion (USA) - mini road test 14 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Even when it does, the close ratios mean you don't get the jerk my Honda gives me. Would go back to it over a diesel if fuel costs weren't an issue, and I never thought I'd hear myself say that. Economy was surprising given I wasn't driving lightly, with 32mpg (imperial) overall, and that was about 60% freeway at 75mph, 30% singletrack road, and 10% town driving.
  • Volkswagen Golf V estate (2007 - ) - 10,000 mile report 18 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Good precise gearchange: I miss an automatic less than I thought I would. I could have had DSG, but the Mercedes drone put me off 4-cylinder diesel automatics, possibly for life. Touching wood, nothing whatsoever has gone wrong or fallen off. They build these in Mexico, so in between dancing on their hats the workforce seems to have done a good job.
  • MG MG ZT (2001 - 2005) - help - mid-life crisis? 1 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Are there any parts which are just not available, and which if I didn't find, could take my car off the road? b) Which engine should I go for? Attracted by the better fuel efficiency of the 1.8T, but I believe these engines have the higher chance of head gasket failure. Is this right? Is the 2.5 V6 the better engine, or does it also suffer from head gasket failure?
  • The hypocrisy in road pricing 5 Dec 2006 (Forum)
Mr Begg (if it were he) compared road pricing with using a telephone, the amount that it is used it effects the amount that is paid, his analogy was to the effect that in comparison with using a telephone roads are free at the point of use! However he completely neglected that fact that even drivers of 50mpg super minis / diesel cars pay around 6 to 7p a mile to the government in fuel duty alone! It was pleasing to hear that the matter of congestion being a cost to business is being acknowledged. Though how the hell does road pricing help?
  • Return from Val D'Isere 2 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Giving up skiing time to pay a parking fine is not in my order of priorities. I'll have to send them a cheque in Euros to settle it. However, with low French fuel duty rates we completed the round trip of over 400Km on half a tank of gas for 28 Euros. A quite incredible feat of economy. After adjusting my driving style and expectations it became quite a well liked, roomy, practical and well equipped tourer.
  • Kia Ceed 3 - Dual Clutch Transmission review 22 Nov 2017 (Forum)
If you are interested, please note that since 2015, Kia has stopped offering petrol DCT for Ceed. It is now only available as 7-speed diesel. There are some niggles though. The temp gauge is now digital which you need to manually show by pressing few scroll buttons. The instant fuel economy is now a digital bar (instead of actual number) and only displayed in MPG (in old model you change change units to km, L etc.)
  • Buying a car, would like a few things cleared up 24 Feb 2017 (Forum)
3: Why do some prices for the same cars online have such huge variations. a quick example would be, i was browsing autotrader & came across some Skoda Octavias. The diesel ones where nearly twice the price of the Petrol ones for the same milage & age. Can the engine taking a different fuel really alter a price that much or are there far more differences to the engines in these cars than just the fuel they take?
  • Any - Does Start/Stop Technology Really Save any Money? 23 Jun 2014 (Forum)
I have been attempting to make my own comparative measurements on a Sept 2001 (61) registered 22,500 miles (and rising) 1.25 litre supermini over intervals in excess of 1200 miles and it is proving difficult to see any significant benefit or improvement in fuel economy by manually 'emulating' the behaviour of a well engineered s/s system such as might be found on cars with sophisticated alternator and battery management systems designed to optimise fuel economy and overall performance i.e. as per BMW 'efficient dynamics' specifications.
  • A bland farewell 24 Oct 2018 (Forum)
The local main dealer has a few but most are at heavily over book prices and my confidence in them has already been shattered. We’ve also both recently changed jobs which now involve very short commutes and really a diesel is no longer suitable and the petrol CRV although very robust is very thirsty and with all the hysteria about diesels barely any cheaper used than the more plentiful diesels. I’ve now gone back to roots with a good used Japanese petrol model instead.
  • Electric & Hybrid Cars 12 May 2012 (Forum)
The petrol engine runs all the time, with the electric power used to give it a bit of an extra push when necessary, so the fuel economy is nothing at all to write home about, and for a car that claimed to be a sports car, it was ugly as sin. The Peugeot 508 hybrid is electric power only at low speed, with the diesel engine only turning on as you speed up.
  • Peugeot 205 record? 1 Nov 2000 (Forum)
She will easily take this new role in her stride and I'm sure that she will be able to do this for very many years to come. We still have a 306 diesel turbo which is a wonderful car and I'm about to take delivery of a Rover 216 coupe. However nothing could ever replicate the incredible service of 205 G667 SST. May she long enjoy her well-earned semi-retirement.
  • BMW 2 Series Active Tourer - A weekend test drive in a BMW 225xe plug-in hybrid 22 Jan 2017 (Forum)
‘Sport’ mode uses the petrol & electric motors together all the time (obviously using more fuel too), and is good fun – the throttle response becomes very eager, and it delivers surprisingly (and amusingly) rapid performance both from a standing start and when merging from slip-roads, overtaking etc.

  • Picked up the Scenic today.... 23 Apr 2007 (Forum)
It has none of the rumble of a Ford or VAG diesel, just a slightly "ticky" background hum overlaid with the odd whistle from the turbo. Absolutely no vibration can be felt through the steering wheel, pedals or gearlever at any revs. Following SWMBO earlier, I noticed it barely smokes at all either.
  • For Volvoman 14 Mar 2003 (Forum)
Although I had the car flat out several times in each of the journeys done so far, I don?t tend to cruise above 120MPH because (a) more frequent fuel stops negate any time saved, (b) the concentration to do it safely is immense, and very tiring, (c) cruising in this speed range is easy to go with the flow. As a lesson to me during the first trip, with 140+ MPH on the clock, I had an old boy in a diesel Passat doing all of about 60 pull out from the inside lane, across the otherwise empty middle lane, in to the outside lane, and back again, whilst he scrabbled for something in his glove box.
  • Downsizing one car - which and to what? 27 Mar 2022 (Forum)
DB used to turbo diesel engines, might not get on with frequent gear changes (but he did encourage me to buy the Civic, considered one himself but put off by prices for newer model at local dealership) Usage of second car would be more by my other half, for me if he needs the bigger car or I only want to go a short distance.
  • Mazda CX-5 - Car breakdown very soon after service 7 Aug 2025 (Forum)
After 16 days of having the car and looking at it on and off, the garage came to the conclusion that a fuel injector was stuck open, which had flooded the engine and exhaust system with diesel. As a result, the injector needs to be replaced, an exhaust regeneration performed to clean it and a new battery, leading to a bill of almost £1000 including £400 just for the replacement injector.
