  • Which car to go for? 8 Jul 2015 (Forum)
    - budget: £18-21k - prefer small SUV/crossover type - got used to luxury and high seating of XC90 (but not fuel efficiency!) - automatic - prefer petrol but open to diesel - 6-8k miles per year - main qualities: comfort, safety, style - max age for used: two years We have so far considered Qashqai (£22k for 1.2 petrol new but unsure of resale value and second hand models scarce); Mazda CX-5 (looks good but costly new); CR-V (lots of kit for the price but costly new and poor reviews); RR Evoque (love the looks but costly even used and not a lot of kit for money); and Kia Sportage (looks good but not the best comfort levels or drive quality).
  • FIAT Grande Punto - Grande Punto 1.9JTD Sporting MAF sensor issue HELP 19 Dec 2013 (Forum)
Hello all.. I have a 2007 Grande Punto 1.9 diesel sporting with the engine management light on, car runs perfect no funny hickups etc although the fuel consumption has gone fairly bad. I have had it plugged in, which came back being fault code P0111 and P0101 which indicates that the air flow metre is at fault (lack of voltage supplied).
  • Seat Leon Mk 1 TDI - Puff of white smoke on cold start-up 9 Apr 2013 (Forum)
I did wonder if perhaps the glow plugs were suspect but the car starts pretty much immediately even at subzero temperatures.  Could it be a leaking injector or another issue?  I've used BG244 fuel system cleaner and Millers Diesel Power Plus in the car previously but I guess it did nothing for the smoking issue. Has anyone else here had experience of this issue with the VW 1.9 TDI engine?
  • Whats the right car? 27 May 2011 (Forum)
I currently drive a ford mondeo ghia x 2.5 V6 and to be fair even though its lovely to drive it is murdering me on running costs. I am 22 so insurance is stupid, fuel prices are on the rise so you cant afford to have a heavy foot which is what fast fords are made for, and the government are tight fisted so road tax is stupid. Simple solution you might think, get a small car and/or diesel.
  • Hyundai ix35 - Ecomony Figures 23 Apr 2011 (Forum)
I bought a new IX35 Premium Diesel about 3 weeks ago. The quoted mpg figures from the brochure are as follows : Urban 40.4, Extra Urban 54.3 & Combined 47.9 The car had 10 miles on the clock when I bought it, and so I fully expected the engine would need to be run-in.
  • any - 80 mph limit on motorways 20 Mar 2011 (Forum)
incidentally last week went from carmarten to west london 210 miles 3 hours 10 mins roads eerily empty between 10.15 and 1.30 in the day. fuel cost seems to have stopped a lot of driving and slowed down lots of people too. But 4 of us went by car, cost  46 lites in diesel round trip, train fare would have been £67 each + 2 underground tickets zone 9 @£11 each so far cheaper for us to drive,
  • VW Passat - VW Passat power reduction 12 Jan 2011 (Forum)
The engine on my 2006 (current shape) 2.0 TDi diesel Passat occasionally cuts back to half power, presumably to safe get-you-home mode. It has done it on and off since new but it is more frequent now. The car has done 146,000 miles but is still quiet, fuel consumption is good and performance - when the problem is not happening - is good.
  • Volvo S40 (2004 - ) - 06 2.0 Starting problem 20 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I have owned a '56 diesel SE Sport Volvo for 6 months, bought and latterly serviced by an independent. Almost from first getting the car there were intermittent problems with it starting. These initially were rare and merely inconvenient, but got progressively worse.
  • Honda Accord UK (2003 - 2008) - Scuba Diving - Don't use a Honda...... 5 Oct 2008 (Forum)
So now I have up to £ 10 K to play with for a SH replacement. I want the same EX spec as my Accord, ie leather , satnav, cruise control but something less fuel gulping than the 2.4 engine and without the possible £ 400 tax in the future. Although I don't mind one way or the other I think a diesel is the best option , I want at least a 2 litre and I prefer Japanese reliability.
  • Which company car to choose ? 13 Jul 2008 (Forum)
    2) I would like the company car tax to be as low as possible. 3) I would like it to be reasonably economical, as I will be paying fuel for private mileage. I will still have access to my old car, a Vauxhall Astra diesel, as my wife will get this. 4) If the car could feel special in some way - something like leather seats, 'climate control', cruise control, or 'sporty appearance', this would be a bonus.
  • Excessive oil company profits? 1 May 2008 (Forum)
And then someone pointed out that the Gov made £25 billion from fuel tax last year (on much lower prices) and would make a nice little bonus on the increased prices this year for doing nothing except collecting the tax - and I wondered - who is ripping off who? Are the oil companies ripping us off?
  • Amusing experience at dealers 7 Jun 2007 (Forum)
This tickled me. Just nipped out in my lunch break to get a PX figure on the Veccy and a figure for 150 bhp diesel Signum. It's a large national franchise, selling only VX at this particular outlet. Sat down with salesman to get some details. Gave home address. Salesman: Now, West Midlands? Is that in Birminghamshire Me.
  • Chinese Citroen ZX problem... 12 Mar 2007 (Forum)
On the air intake hose, between the air cleaner and the inlet manifold, there is what I suspect is an airflow meter with a mechanical air vane, am I right? I know there's something resembling one of these things on my Vauxhall diesel back home so I'm guessing it does the same job. This device, whatever it is, has had to be cleaned twice in the past year. The car has suffered poor fuel economy, and when the dealer has connected up the diagnostic machine, this thing has been instantly pinpointed as the culprit.
  • 306 d turbo lacks power. 30 May 2005 (Forum)
and the air filter was just as black so I have changed the oil and air filters, oil and put cleaners through the air and fuel systems, but this is my first diesel and I'm struggling. Do you change your glowplugs like you would spark plugs? I have inspected them and they seem fine. In fact from what I can tell all seems fine, any ideas to what could be causing this terrible lack of power?
  • Pug 306TD tacho sensor/wiring 30 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Is this correct, is it supposed to have a very high impedance? I would be very grateful if any other pug306 diesel owners (with tacho display) could measure the resistance of their tacho unit (with crankshaft sensor disconnected). This plug/socket connection is below the fuel filter, and has a 3 plug connector, with the two left most pins only used.
  • Taxi! 14 Dec 2003 (Forum)
As if these statistics are not enough, Taxi Stockholm is a franchise operation with 1,600 cars on the books, mostly E Class Diesel Estates and V70 D5s, all clocking up this sort of mileage, all requiring servicing, and all requiring dispatch coordination. Instead of the Volvo RTI traffic avoidance and navigation system, the franchise entitles the cabbie to an integrated dispatch control and touch screen navigation system that was truly impressive.

  • Help with replacement car choice 16 Feb 2017 (Forum)
I wonder whether I should really consider a Civic with the 1.8VTec but having tried one and being used to a turbo diesel,  I rather missed the lack of torque at low revs. Has anyone (other than HJ) tried a 1.2 PureTec 308 and like it? Perhaps I should be looking at diesels- we have had two with DPFs and had no emissions systems problems and I will be getting rid at c. 75k-80k miles perhaps before any problems would emerge?
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 1.8 or 2.0 litre petrol, or 2.0 TDCI? 18 Feb 2009 (Forum)
My guess is that the TDCI will be a much nicer drive, with a litle more noise but a heck of a lot more useable power. There is little to choose between them in fuel cost: on current prices, my spreadsheet says that 30k miles in the diesel will cost £3,093, compared with £3314 in the petrol. That's barely £200 a year, but enough to pay for an extended warranty on the diesel once the manufacturers warranty runs out in 18 months time.
  • Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer - Is this MPG-based scheme unfair? Help please! 7 Feb 2016 (Forum)
I'm beginning to think they might be unique.... The car is fuelled with a company credit card or from the company diesel pump, and his private mileage repayment is calculated by working out how much of that fuel was spent on business miles. They do this by calculating how much fuel would have been used if the car achieved the manufacturer's mpg rate, and anything on top of that is deemed to be private mileage, for which the employee is charged.
