By reducing heat loss, plastic wraps could theoretically cut fuel consumption by 5% in the summer and up to 10% in the winter. The system has been tested at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences using a 1.4 litre Volkswagen Golf. A research team led by Professor Norbert Deuben enclosed the car's engine with 30mm thick polyurethane foam boards. The engine was run to its operating temperature of about 100C before being turned off. -

Shortlist so far Octavia - but mainly diesel, concerned with reliability Focus mk3/mk2 but not many with 1.6 petrol, is 1.6 vcti still the Yamaha one? Or 1.8 Avensis estate petrol Kia ceed estate Hyundai i30 estate Volkswagen touran Maybe a large hatch would be big enough... I did see a Skoda Rapid Spaceback byf don’t think it would be big enough. I’m a diesel fan but modern ones put me off, currently have a 1.6cr in my seat but failed regens and oil overfilling/dpf and intermittent injector errors put me off the older PD I had was much better. -

Also, I'm looking at two replacements: 2003 03 FORD FOCUS 1.8 TDCi Ghia Full Leather Interior 5 Door Hatchback 2003 03 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF 1.9 SE TDI 100 5 Door Hatchback Both are priced at £5995 and appear to be in really good nick but the have quite high mileage around 90,000 on each. I've never had a deisel before so I'm unsure if they are decent buys. -

Honda - Civic - didn't like it at all, poor equipment level and too small for price - Jazz - Lovely to drive, but not quite big enough. Volkswagen - Passat 130bhp - Excellent to drive and good equipment, but no hatchback. Ford - Mondeo 130bhp - Excellent to drive and good equipment levels. Toyota - Avensis Hatch D4D - Fair to drive, excellent quality and equipment, haven't found one within price range Skoda - New Octavia 140bhp - Excellent engine and quality, favourite so far, but think it may be impossible to find a used one within price range. -
