Criteria for a Motorway Patrol Car 20 Oct 2003 (Forum)
The reason I ask is, I would imagine cost would be high on the list; I've seen a lot of Range Rovers, Discos, the odd Nissan Patrol, Terrano II, Isuzu Trooper and on one occasion even a Merc ML - What is the justification for running a 4X4 as a motorway patrol car over say a Vx 3.0 Omega estate or a Volvo T5 V70 for example? I would imagine both the latter would be much better high speed pursuit vehicles and be able to carry pretty much the same equipment/load as most of the above mentioned 4X4's and be equally capable at a motorway RTA and I'd imagine that they may be cheaper to run too. -
Reconditioned and second hand car parts 12 Aug 2003 (Forum)
Have other people any stories or views about these much cheaper parts. Which parts are worth risking, and which aren?t? The million mile Volvo owner always says to use original parts, is he right in all cases? -
Buying but hardly any sellers 9 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Its true its seems selling a brand new car is to tough for lots of sellers. I have put together a comprehensive list of options to with a Volvo XC70 and sent out a request to 10+ sources of cars. A significant number of the sources came from browsing this site although I do appreciate that does not mean they are OK. The spec was detailed and amounted to a further 6k worth of factory options and dealer fit options but it seems this takes the car to the difficult league and may did not even bother to reply, some couldn't offer the car. -
Thanks for all advice this year - QX 19 Dec 2002 (Forum)
After much testing of almost all Turbo Diesels on the market, I went back and bought another QX (again)! The list is: 1. 406 2.1td 2. passat td 110 3. mondeo 1.8td 4. scorpio 2.5td 5. volvo 940 2.4td 6. Rover 620td I cannot get used to the TD's characteristic. I find it completely gutless from idle to 2000rpm, where I would always press the throttle down gradually until almost full throttle, then I would be hit by a HGV from behind suddenly when the turbo picks in, where then I always jump off the throttle. -

Big cars: further to fall? And what would YOU do? 22 Oct 2008 (Forum)
It was a shock: last time I even looked at its value was about two years ago, when it seemed to be worth about £7,500; now, traders are advertising tidy-looking Volvo S60 D5 manuals of similar vintage and mileage to mine (six years, 83,000) for £4,500, and in one case, less than £4,000. From which I deduce that mine is probably worth between £3,000 and £3,500. -
Switching 2 cars to EV 26 Aug 2024 (Forum)
At the moment we have: 2017 LR Disco HSE 90k miles - owned outright - about £20k value. 2010 Volvo V70 150k miles - owned outright - about £1k value. The V70 is getting a bit long in the tooth and we are spending a lot on upkeep and repairs, the Disco costs a fair bit to run and is starting to develop a few expensive repairs. -
Take me back 23 Jun 2021 (Forum)
Bluetooth this, hands free that, twenty ECU’s, numb electric steering and hugely complex automated manual gearbox all with an almost certain gargantuan bill for repair at the other end. My wife’s Volvo is full of complex electronics that fill me with fear and are never used by me if I can avoid it. Even turning on the A/C requires much eyes off road distraction. I long for simpler times. If I could buy a modern version of this. -
Honda CR-V - Petrol Estate or SUV 35mpg+ capable around £3k 23 Sep 2020 (Forum)
Using this web's real mpg as a beacon I am thinking of the following models which I like Honda CR-V MK3 (2007-) 2.0 Vtec Honda Accord Estate MK4 (I think) (2008-) 2.0 Vtec Ford Mondeo Estate MK3 VAG line up with the 1.4 TSI or even the 1.8 TSI Volvo V50 1.6 When browsing I also looked kindly at the Mazda 6 which adopted euro 6 in 2012 but I am worried about getting stuck with DPF issues and else. and they are more on the £4500 region and up The Astra Van also adopted Euro 6 with the 1.6 CDTI as early as 2013 but I don't like that much. -
James Ruppert 26 Apr 2020 (Forum)
This week he has written an article about buying a car for the price of an annual bus pass (£625 from memory) but instead of suggesting a list of robust, simple, reliable petrol engined mass produced cars for which parts are cheap and available he’s went off on one with a list of the worst cars you could possibly buy on such a tight budget from a turbo diesel Renault Espace to big BMW’s, Mercs, Jags, a V8 Audi through diesel Volvo estates with interstellar mileages and Saab Convertibles even an Alfa Romeo. It is in fact a list of cars you shouldn’t buy for £625. The slightest thing goes wrong with most of them and it’s a write-off. -
Audi A3 Sportback - Advice from owners for used premium car purchase? 2 Aug 2017 (Forum)
Thoroughly reliable but thoroughly ordinary, plus some quirks that make me hate an otherwise accetpable vehicle. So am considering moving to a premium make, which I'd say are Audi/Merc/BMW/Volvo, with a budget of around £10K used. This will be the most we've ever spent on a car, and I've typically had Citroens, which have been unreliable. From what I've read, an Audi A3 will suit but the field's wide open. -
High mileage driver looking for next (used) car 17 Jun 2017 (Forum)
I would like a big estate car which drives well, though not wedded to BMW, though it has to be said, once you're used to iDrive, and you try another car (Volvo V60, Jeep Renegade) and realise how dreadful their user interfaces are.....Anyway, what might I consider that is reasonably quick, won't do terrible MPG, is at least as big as the Beemer and feels good to drive? -
How to decode your VIN Number 16 Dec 2015 (Forum)
For example; Audi(A), BMW(B), Buick(4), Cadillac(6), Chevrolet(1), Chrysler(C), Dodge(B), Ford(F), GM Canada(7), General Motors(G), Honda(H), Jaquar(A), Lincoln(L), Mercedes Benz(D), Mercury(M), Nissan(N), Oldsmobile(3), Pontiac(2or5), Plymouth(P), Saturn(8), Toyota(T), VW(V), Volvo(V). 3rd character- Identifies vehicle type or manufacturing division. 4th to 8th characters- Identifies vehicle features such as body style, engine type, model, series, etc. 9th character- Identifies VIN accuracy as check digit. 10th character- Identifies the model year. -
Suggestions of a good new car 4 x 4 5 Jul 2015 (Forum)
I have the trade in price of this BMW plus a few thousand to spend, so not too much really. I looked at the Volvo XC90 and xc70 - the latter is too small in the back, and the 90 seems to have other problems I have seen on forums. I had an xtrail several years ago - a good reliable car but found it slow, uncomfortable and not a nice ride. -

Swapping S-Max for Kia Sorento 16 Jan 2014 (Forum)
Having looked around I don't like any of the other seven seat MPVs and apart from the Grand C-Max you cannot spec them up to the same level as my car with all the bells and whistles. So its back to the larger 4x4s and the BMW X5, Audi Q7 are way too expensive, I had a Volvo XC90 and thought it awful so have arrived at the Kia Sorento or Hyundai Santa Fe twins. The Kia appears to offer better value for money for the same spec and engine/gearbox combination. They will be a little more economical and faster than the S-Max and appear to have a nice flat floor and three individual seats for the second row. -
A6/A4 - Audi A6 or A4 Avant 7 Feb 2012 (Forum)
Hello again! The Mrs and I have now discounted the Volvo V50 option based on the apparant limited space available. We both like the look of the last shape (54-08) A4 and larger A6 Avant. This will be the main family car and as such will be driven by my wife in the main as she is about to go off on maternity leave with our second child. -
Nissan Pathfinder - New car choices 30 Dec 2011 (Forum)
Combinations we've come up with so far are:- a Sharan or a Previa plus an oldish X-trail or CR-V a Nissan Pathfinder or Volvo XC90 plus an oldish Mazda 3 or similar. I like the idea of a 7-seat 4x4. I don't want a Landrover. The XC90s look nice but I'm worried about problems at the age we'd be buying (60k miles ish). -
Mercedes clk 320 - older car running report 12 Jun 2011 (Forum)
Great idea to start the running report on the new Volvo. Thought I'd give a try at one on my older car which I bought three years ago at 94k and registered in 2000 .I've got to 130k now and apart from normal servicing I had one large bill for a pse pump of £600 and was quoted £600 to fix the convertible roof at the main dealers.
