  • Ford S-MAX engine failure after 44,000 miles 17 Oct 2016 (Ask HJ)
I bought a six month old Ford S-Max from a dealer in 2011. The car had 6000 miles on the clock when I bought it and has been regularly serviced ever since....
  • Bulk diss count 5 Dec 2009 (Ask HJ)
This week my 1997 SAAB 900 Convertible failed its MOT test due to a crack in the bulkhead. It was fine at the service in August. It has done 98,000 miles...
  • All - Depreciation after 7 years 31 Dec 2019 (Forum)
There are many 7year old and older cars( HJ's shelf life!) usually well north of £20k. Do members think that depreciation will accelerate on some of these with the rapidly changing factors(government and new tech?) or will depreciation continue as of old ie tailing off.
  • Does the New Nissan Micra come with an intelligent key system? 6 Feb 2011 (Ask HJ)
Does the New Nissan Micra come with an intelligent key system?
  • Road tests 7 Nov 2008 (Forum)
Yes, the later focuses handle and drive well, but the front wheel drive transmission noise on these, Ka's, fiestas sound like a tractor. The 1.3 engine in the old Ka [and some of the old fiesta's] is little changed from the unit in the old 1960s Anglia. And the seats in the Mondeo are the only car guaranteed to give me back-ache aftre more than 30 mins. Mind you, Ford's corporate hospitality is legendary!
  • £5k, 22yrs old & 60 mile commute 23 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Hi all, I was wondering what people would suggest for the above - a total budget of £5k (preferably including insurance) for my 22yr old sister who will be commuting 60 miles a day. I'm thinking it'll need decent fuel economy, she's never had her own car so has no NCD (so insurance will be painful) and it'll need to be reliable. Any sensible suggestions would be appreciated and considered!
  • Old Mini - Modern Classic? 15 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Just passing time looking at the e-bay motors section recently and I am amazed at the prices being asked (and sometimes achieved) for the old style Mini. Not the 60's/70's Cooper/1275 models I hasten to add, but the 1.0 litre BL built cars from the 80's, most of which have long since died from terminal rust. One punter was after £1500 for his rusty 1985 mayfair model!
  • Seat Leon 1.9TDI FR - Seat Leon 1.9TDI FR 17 Oct 2011 (Forum)
Does anyone on here know what problems are likely with this engine/model, any preventative maintenance to prevent problems, etc as I'm conscious the car is 7 years old already and I've never bought a car this old before? Also, the car does not feel any faster than my old (but remapped) Focus 1.8 TDCi 115hp.  I'm considering a rolling road session to see if the power is where it should be...
  • New versus 3 years old quandary 30 Jul 2011 (Forum)
An extra £3,755 gets me a 3 year newer car with a 5 year warranty. Assuming I keep whatever car for 5 years, the extra is only £755 odd per year.... Saying that, I haven't factored in depreciation which will be a lot more on the brand new car to the Focus.
  • 17yr old male drivers......insurance......again!! 22 Apr 2010 (Forum)
I know this has been discusse before, but.......Wow!....insurance costs for 17 yr olds!! My son will be 17 this summer and I would like to insure him on either his own car (looking at group1 or 2 cars) or as an additional driver on a slightly higher grouped car belonging to me. Quotes coming in at £2,050 for a group 1 car with pass plus succesfully completed.
  • Risks buying certain 3yr old cars 24 May 2007 (Forum)
Its often a common policy of economic car ownership to buy at 2 or 3 years old to lose the high initial depreciation, but (IMHO) times have changed and certain models pose enhanced risks. Decades ago when I learnt to drive as a teenager (and as a consequence work on cars) any inadvertant abuse of the car was tempered by a growing mechanical sympathy due to understanding and being able to *visualise* what was going on, in for example the clutch, or oil flow around a cold engine.

and if so would it cause a problem if I took out a new policy for the new car, when I still have a few weeks left on my old policy?

  • Part exchange on car - VO5 shows old address 23 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Hi I have just agreed to part-ex my existing Vauxhall Omega as part of the purchase for my new car (for very little money - but I wasn't expecting much). I have all the necessary documents etc but the VO5 does carry my old address as I never got it changed when I moved to my current address 4 years ago.
  • Insurance for 17 year old 6 Mar 2008 (Forum)
My 17 year old son is currently taking driving lessons and I'm trying to organise some insurance for one of the family cars (both for pre- and post-test driving). Assuming a Fiesta 1.25 finesse (wife's car) any experience on the cheapest company?
