  • Will the new Lada Niva Travel be sold in the UK? 14 Jan 2021 (News)
The rear also sees the introduction of LED taillights and a more embossed bumper. All Lada Niva Travel cars are equipped with a permanent four-wheel-drive system, while off-road versions get a standard snorkel, off-road tyres and an unpainted plastic body kit to protect the paintwork from damage. The Niva joined Lada's range in 1979, but financial difficulties prompted AvtoVAZ (Lada's parent company) to withdraw from most European markets in 1997. The SUV was rebranded as the Chevrolet Niva between 2003 and 2020 when AvtoVAZ was in a joint venture with General Motors called GM-AvtoVAZ.  Lada is now part of Renault and shares its platform with a number of vehicles from the French carmaker's line-up.
  • Hidden Heroes: Vauxhall Meriva VXR 16 Aug 2019 (News)
First of all, while the Meriva on which it was based was the definition of automotive white goods, the VXR model had a cheeky, unexpected character. But more than that, it was absolutely hilarious to drive, with frantic power delivery, surprisingly sharp steering and a vast amount of grip.  It was an excellent hot hatch, but one with a body that was perfect for the school run and the tip run.

  • Volkswagen axes Beetle in move towards electrified vehicles 14 Sep 2018 (News)
Sales have been slow in recent years, as buyers opt for the more conventional Golf over the less practical Beetle. • Fake number plates produced in minutes 11 Sep 2018 (News)
The process of car cloning is when criminals steal another car's identity by using its number plate on another vehicle. This is often done to hide motoring offences such as driving without insurance, tax or MoT - but it could also be used to throw police off the scent following a more serious crime. To cut down on car cloning, only DVLA registered suppliers can legally produce UK car number plates.
  • A Grand Monday: Fiat Punto 60S 30 Jul 2018 (News)
Tough, basic, mechanically durable and refreshingly stylish, the Italian manufacturer is renowned for making some of the best superminis in the world. The Punto is a case in point – great to drive, lively even its most basic form and distinctively styled, it’s hard to believe that it’s now a quarter of a century since it first appeared.  But then, ask yourself this. When was the last time you saw a Mk1 Punto?
  • Dramatic finish for inaugural Blue Train Challenge 28 Sep 2017 (News)
Inspired by the legendary run by the Bentley of Wolf Barnato from Cannes to London in March 1930, the Blue Train Challenge set off from Deauville with James Gately and Tony Brooks driving into the lead in their 1937 Cadillac Convertible.    As the event (organised by the Endurance Rally Association) journeyed 1690kms through Fountevraud, Vichy, Lyon, and L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, with crews and cars competing in a series of regularity sections, special tests, and time controls, Gately and Brooks kept the rest of the field at arm’s length until mechanical failure hit at the final regularity just before the finish line.

  • Petrol prices set to overtake diesel next week 4 Sep 2017 (News)
Early next week, petrol prices are expected to overtake diesel, as the shut-down of at least 11 large oil refineries in the Gulf Coast drives up US demand for petrol imports. • A Grand Monday: Ford Mondeo 25 Oct 2016 (News)
Our tip for the next Ford to catch on as a classic is this – the original Mondeo. Despite being 23 years old, it still looks fresh and modern, and is still a decent car to drive, too, making it ideal as a usable family classic. It was also a brilliant car when new – a deserved European car of the Year winner, and a model that completely transformed public perceptions of Ford’s ability to engineer well-made and fine handling cars after the PR disaster that was the Mk 4 Escort.
  • New fuel consumption test thrown into doubt by Brexit 7 Sep 2016 (News)
. The news comes as HonestJohn.co.uk analysis shows that the gap between advertised and   Real MPG   economy is at its widest ever, with fewer than two out of every 10 cars achieving their advertised MPG. The current NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) test procedure was due to be scrapped in 2017 and replaced with the all-new WLTP (Worldwide Harmonised Light-duty Test Procedure). The WLTP test is said to be more realistic than the NEDC; however, with Brexit causing uncertainty across the board, the Government has now refused to say if it will implement the new test or not.

More fun to drive, but estimated at a high £18,000 to £25,000 this 1947 Triumph Roadster 1800 complete with separately screened dickey seat must have been one of the first. I very nearly managed to swap my 1959 Isetta 300 for one back in 1964.

According to the advert, the car ‘drives superbly and smoothly, without clonks or rattles. Everything works correctly, although the windows could do with some lubrication as they open a bit slowly.’ It continues, ‘The interior is like new, and the ashtray and cigarette lighter have never been soiled.’ It even has the original owner’s wallet (complete with handbooks), the radio code, spare wheel, jack and tools.
  • A Grand Monday: Low-mileage Montego estate, £899 25 Jan 2016 (News)
As you’d expect for such a cherished motor, it comes with plenty of history – old MoTs, handbooks, spare keys, dealer badges and even mats. According to the advert, it drives well and is comfortable at motorway speeds. It’s been garaged for the past year, but the current owner is losing his storage so needs to downsize his fleet. This Montego has just 22k on the clock.
