  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 02 2.0 failure for engine to start 20 Jan 2009 (Forum)
The car is a zetec diesel estate. The car was working satisfactotily when parked overnight. The following morning the car would not start and showed no response when the engine was turning over (the battery is in good order).
  • Rover 75 (1999 - 2005) - 02 2.0 Reluctant to start 13 Oct 2008 (Forum)
There are no warning lights. Performance is fine once it's going. It went into the garage yesterday and had the fuel filter changed (they said it cured the problem but clearly not), and short of dragging it to a dealer to see if any codes are logged I'm not sure what the problem is. Has anyone seen this issue before?
  • Looking for a New MPV, advice needed 29 Jan 2008 (Forum)
I'm looking to replace my car (most likely with something maybe one year old, at auction) and the following things are important to me: -speedometer and gauges in front of the driver, as opposed to in the centre console (rules out the Picasso) -good fuel economy, ideally a better economy than my 1.9 dTi scenic.... I expect this to be diesel... but would consider a good petrol -i just need a 4 seater, but would consider a 7 seater if it meets the above two points.
  • Refuelling mishap Pug307 - advice sought 19 Jan 2007 (Forum)
He then drove the short distance (no more than 1 mile) back to the office. The RAC collected the car, and took it off for the fuel system to be drained locally and car was refiiled with Diesel, cost for this was around £150. I have been talking to my colleague as my concern is that he may have problems with the car in the future.
  • 96 VW Golf 1.9D starting problem 22 Sep 2006 (Forum)
I had the glow-plugs changed yesterday but it is still giving the same problem. The only other thing that I have not changed for a while is the fuel filter. Please does anyone know what else it could be. Thanks in advance.
  • Green Police ! 1 Sep 2006 (Forum)
As well, the Toyota Lexus RX400h hybrid SUV is currently undergoing trials in the U.K. for full police duty, including patrol and emergency response. I wonder if this will result in lower council tax bills aftere the savings in fuel costs. I think not somehow. Cue the Hybrids not being economical debate !
  • Which car? 28 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Ideal car VW Polo/ Lupo post-2000 but I know i'm pushing my luck with my budget. I need it: To be VERY economical on fuel (BTW should it be diesel or petrol...?) To be no more than £2000 To be in the lowest of the low insurance bracket (I'm 22) To be small and nippy To be reliable and sturdy - I know nothing about car maintenance and don't really want to learn.
  • Spain 22 May 2001 (Forum)
Drove across From Zaragoza to Madrid, sometimes travlling at 200 Kph, along beautifully maintained and arrow straight roads, when the roads passed through villages and towns, obviously we had to slow down, but instead of finding a Speed camera or a craftily hidden copper, they have a system which will turn a set of traffic lights to red if you approach the well marked sensor at over 50 Kph. Spain obviously hasn't caught on to the use of the motorist as a revenue "Cash Cow" - the fuel is much cheaper too - Diesel approx 45p / litre. I want to go and live there !! Why do we continue to put up with the shoddy tratment by this Cynical and dishonest regime ?

In the reply to the 'Superman' comment, the part that says "Quite a lot of Volvo owners are coming very unstuck from trying to run their Volvo diesels on anything else" is not correct. The EGR / EGR cooler fault with the Volvo D4 modular diesel engine is well-documented and is a fundamental design fault from the factory, compounded by inadequate pre-launch testing.
  • VW Passat 1.9 TDI Estate 11 Nov 2012 (Forum)
On a previous thread I was debating going petrol over diesel for my next car. However after thinking logically (i.e. not every diesel owner suffers a turbo failure, or countless DMF replacements) we have both come to the conclusion that due to our mileage each year we would be around £700-£800 better off (and that is a conservative estimate) by going diesel.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - Another TDCI problem - smoke from radiator grille 10 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Tonight however it seems to have got worse, there is a fair bit of smoke coming out after hard driving (was late for work) that smells of Diesel. I called the RAC, the patrol bloke looked for a couple of mins, said he could see diesel over the front of the engine but could not see the actual leak. He suggested it was the fuel pump that was cracked which could cost around £1000 fitted.
  • Audi A3 Thoughts 12 Nov 2004 (Forum)
BUT - I am doing quite a bit of mileage now and it has to go I think distressing as it might be, it need s a lot of servicing, the repair bill can be high, and the fuel consumption is another story. Anyone want to buy? Having looked at some impressive diesel cars I really like the Audi A3 2.0 diesel with DSG. I drove an SE for a longish test drive and was impressed by the performance and the transmission.
  • Mazda Mazda 6 (2002 - 2007) - Turbo Diesels - same afflictions as TDCI? (Vol 3) 17 Mar 2012 (Forum)
The car was recovered to a local garage who have repaired my car numerous times over the last 2 years. The current state of play after many investigations and phonecalls to diesel specialists, and a local mazda dealer ( who seemed totally uninterested) by the garage is that they suspect that the fuel injectors, one or more are shot, although they told me they still cannot be sure.
  • Please advise - New car up2 17k 27 Apr 2007 (Forum)
So i'm left thinking, do i go for diesel, shall i buy new (depreciation i hate that word) or just forget and enjoy, shall i consider another car or shall i just stick with my trusty run of the mill car that has never let me down and is stupidly cheap to run.
  • Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 2000 2.0 110 BHP HDI Air Pollution Fault 23 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Turbo decides to have massive lag and only kicks in a 3000 rpm but drives fine other than that. Local garage changed water logged air filter - no change to turbo lag. Then one morning the fuel pump (located in the fuel tank) decides to give up. Second hand fuel pump fitted successfully and car starts fine, however 'air pollution fault' showing along with the engine management light on dash.
  • Toyota Avensis (2003 - 2008) - Post-service - poor starting and fuel economy 6 Feb 2010 (Forum)
(Strangely, my car also suffered a 5-10% drop in MPG after the 20k service, only being back to normal after the 30k one). One other thing, they added fuel cleaner to the tank. Are these different for petrol and diesel? Is it possible that something unwelcome has been added to the tank?
  • Vauxhall Corsa CDTi 05 plate - V Bad fuel consumption + minor electrical niggles 26 Jan 2011 (Forum)
Have had the car from new, always been a fab car to drive and an excellent slave for the daily commute. About 66000 miles I am experiencing dire fuel consumption.  It's diesel and 1.3.  I have always used the same fuel garage (bar the odd time when I am out of town).  I have done Liverpool to Aberdeen (some 375 miles once i get through the town) on 3/4 tank from brimmed.

  • Nissan Qashqai+2 - Finally traded my Tino in 1 May 2018 (Forum)
It’s got the 1.6 CDi Renault start stop engine which Honest John seems to rate. I really wanted an automatic and wasn’t after a diesel but I do enough long runs and will be driving to France this year so the fuel economy will be nice. Had Diesel vans for years so kind of know what to expect with maintenance. 12 month warranty and 2 years free servicing plus got £400 for my Tino which is what I paid for it and it’s only worth £100 now.
