Last week a colleague accidentally filled his 307 HDi with Petrol. He then drove the short distance (no more than 1 mile) back to the office.

The RAC collected the car, and took it off for the fuel system to be drained locally and car was refiiled with Diesel, cost for this was around £150.

I have been talking to my colleague as my concern is that he may have problems with the car in the future. He was thinking of keeping the car for some time, so should he have any concerns? Reading the recent thread about the c-max would suggest this could be the case.

Mods- wasnt sure if should link this to this thread www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?f=4&t=48...5. If not hijacking it please move over if appropriate.

Many thanks in advance to all for your help.

What was the diesel to petrol ratio. Regards Peter
Refuelling mishap Pug307 - advice sought - PW
Was very low on Diesel when filled up- so was pretty much a full tank of Petrol that went in. Said it was about £40 worth of fuel.

Very, very hard to say what (if any) damage has been done. 1 mile is not a long way and there may just be enough diesel in the tank to keep things lubed.

For what it's worth, I'd suggest he gets a lubricity additive like Miller's Diesel Power Plus and adds it to the next 4-5 tankfulls, and see if any ill effects crop up.

It will have been on almost neat petrol if it did a mile, given that the fuel constantly circulates.
Personally that would worry me enough to move it on,
sorry to be so negative, but a mile is a long way under those circumstances, with a full tank of petrol.

Afraid I'd have to completely agree with oilrag; trade it in today. If he waits until something physical shows up, [50/50 chance?] it'll be far too late to avoid the £2800 bill. HDi's must lubricate on a knife-edge; they just hate any amount of petrol - even 5%.

Thanks all- that's what I was thinking. Will pass these comments on.

This is becoming a nightmare - what are we to do, never buy used diesels?

I heard on another forum about a salesman incorrectly fueling a brand-new car as it was being delivered - how would you even know it had happened?
Refuelling mishap Pug307 - advice sought - pmh
Should we start a register to ensure that no one from this site buys it s/h? At least post the area and color!

Agree with you Bill, I even feel bad about advising to sell it on in these circumstances but how can you risk taking the personal hit?
I`m not going to keep posting the link to the misfueling blog, but I can`t see a way to know if a misfueling has occured.
( re buying used) and I dont really think the full implications are out into the publics general car knowledge yet or used common rail sales would surely suffer. On second thought maybe not as the *engine well known for overheating and popping its head gasket* still sold well.....
All IMHO

"At least post the area and color!"
Good idea Peter. What if it goes through auction though and pops up elsewhere?
What about Colour, a secret mark on the bottom of the exhaust can, possible area.

I know thats really going too far..... but

The fact its a 307 & a HDI is enough to put most sane people off in the first place.

Even the technicians that work for Peugeot only like them for all the bonus they bring them repairing all the faults.

It's Impossible to say if any damage has been done...if the petrol to diesel ratio was high enough in the hp fuel rail to cause the engine to run very roughly and the owner finds any trace of metal particles in the bottom of the filter I would be concerned..otherwise forget it.

Colleague ran a full tank of unleaded through a Citroen HDi with no ill effects whatsoever.

50,000 miles later it still runs fine.
Refuelling mishap Pug307 - advice sought - Peter D
Can not be true, a full tank of unleaded so perhaps 10 or 20% diesel. The car would run at all. Regards Peter

what about this, from another forum, Sorry if not allowed to do this.......

"Summer 2005. my boss and his collegue went on a fisking trip paid for by the company. anyway they wangled a brand new toyota hilux d4d for the 10day trip. on the day they were due back we were just about to lock up when i saw an aa flat bed recovery come into our yard. hilux on the back. my boss had put 50 qid?s worth of petrol in it and drove until it started to cough and splutter as he put it. so we drained it brimmed the tank with kero left it overnight, drained it the next morning then brimmed the tank again this time with bp ultimate diesel. we then ran it on the dyno for 3 hours. didn?t miss a beat. all variables were in perameters. 6 weeks later a friend of mine who works for the local toyota dealer said that he had to change the complete fuel system on a hire hilux, bill> 3000 quid"

Put £40 worth of petrol in my 406 2.1TD didn't realise I had done so until after six miles or so the car started making distressful noises and proceeding in a series of kangaroo jumps. Rescue people towed it away drained it refilled it with the right stuff and sent me on my way. Done about 12000 miles since with no discernable ill affects. Quite surprised I got so far before it manifested itself, 40 quids worth of petrol must have pretty well diluted the fuel left in the tank.

The tough-as-old-boots old-tech diesels like yours were far more tolerant of mis-fuelling than the modern super-fragile CR stuff. It'd still have likely seized the injection pump and broken the cam-belt if you'd driven on though.

Many thanks to all for the help with this. Have passed the comments on. And to answer earlier comments is a silver 53 reg in the Exeter area.

Colleague is still mulling over what to do- as is quite concerned about the implications of what could go wrong, but is looking very likely that car will go.

Thanks again to all has been greatly appreciated.
