  • Correct fluid/oil types ?? 29 Aug 2002 (Forum)
How important is it to stick to exactly the same make and/or type of brake fluid, coolant, engine oil, power steering fluid etc. etc. when topping up their levels ? My Volvo manual states for example that I should top up with their own coolant (type C - blue/green @ 50% water/50% coolant) but doesn't seem to give a specification for this that I could try to match elsewhere at less cost.
  • Air con repair 6 May 2002 (Forum)
My Volvo 850 has an air con problem. There is a leak somewhere. Independant servicing garage says its a compressor leak. Main dealer says most likely evaporator leak. Neither could say for sure because the system has to be gassed up first which they say costs over £100.

  • Tow bar height, caravan weight, rear suspension 8 Sep 2001 (Forum)
When a caravan is towed, the weight of the van lowers the suspension even more and so the tow bar is even lower - hence more weight is applied to the tow bar. I am thinking of a caravan next year. The suspensionon on my Volvo 940 estate, when unloded, is a good 2 inches lower at the rear than it is at the front. Will this be a problem when towing a caravan {70 kgs down force}, should I up rate the suspension, can I fit stiffer / longer rear shocks / springs.
  • My question to an MP regarding Bio-diesel - Reply! 4 Feb 2011 (Forum)
One of my constituents owns a 2008 Volvo diesel-engined car that was the subject of a safety recall by Volvo owing to concerns that rising oil levels in the engine may cause the car to ‘self-fuel’, thus making the car run away without it being possible to turn the engine off.
  • Will need a 'station car' car soon... 15 Mar 2017 (Forum)
At worst (generally) I would get wet and miss the intended train. Prior to the Jaag I had a Volvo 440,before that a petrol Maz 6. The volvo wasn't very comfortable, especially after working for 8 hours and then having to drive 200 miles in it. So anything similar would be ruled out. I am thinking petrol Mondeo/Maz 6, but what about some 90s cars, Rover 600 ??
  • Can't make up me mind wot car to buy 30 Jul 2007 (Forum)
My 1992 Volvo 240SE haas just passed the 150,000 mile mark, following 2.5 years of ownership, bought for £400 (though about a £1000 spent in repairs first year, not much since). I've enjoyed care-free motoring with it; i.e.
  • Go back to petrol: would you? 3 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I've been a diesel user for nearly five years, persuaded to change by the then-new BIK rules as I was choosing what turned out to be my last company car. I still have that car (Volvo S60 D5) and I've been very pleased with the way it combines usable thrust with mid-40s fuel economy, while keeping all the dieselly noises out of the cabin. Only having to refuel it once a month at the moment is a bonus too.
  • my hit list of new cars to buy.. 15 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Of course ncap might beat little relation to real life. After an extensive survey here is my list, now, really the volvo is the pick of them all, but is a lot of money for a small car, the mazda is good value, but has a lot safety rating and is a little small inside for a big guy, so my heart really at the moment goes out to the RAV 4.
  • Colchester dealerships - The merry go round 23 Jul 2025 (Forum)
Kia ( Now Glyn Hopkin ) have moved up to the top of Ipswich road by the A12 to the ex Honda site and recently joined by Glyn Hopkin Nissan who have moved out of a constricted site in the town which was shared with Renault and dacia all of which were Glyn Hopkin. Volvo have moved to take up the huge Skoda site.
  • Mid Large Family Car 17 May 2022 (Forum)
Now the tricky bit; I don't want a Merc, BMW, Audi, Jaguar or any VAG brand. So far, I can think of a Volvo S90 (a bit too big), Kia Stinger (a bit too flashy) or some kind of Maserati / Alfa (a bit too unreliable).  Any other ideas please? TIA
  • Volkswagen T-Roc - Volkswagen T-Roc vs Peugeot 3008 5 Aug 2020 (Forum)
I know the T-Roc is more of a crossover while the 3008 is a smaller SUV so it may be comparing apples to pears but I was just wondering if anyone had any opinions to which car may be better? Or even if they might recommend something entirely different. My family already has a Volvo XC60 serving the role of a SUV so my thinking was that the T-Roc may play the role of a somewhat smaller car. I've tried driving both cars and liked them fairly equally, especially that you are higher sitting in them than say a Golf or something smaller and lower to the ground in size.
  • Car hunting nightmare 4 Feb 2016 (Forum)
The brands I am mostly looking at (unless anyone says avoid): Citroen Fiat Ford Nissan Renault Suzuki Vauxhall Volvo    Not sure if I am ranting or asking for help on suggestions.
  • Vauxhall Vivaro - Watch your mirrors 18 Sep 2015 (Forum)
Spotted blue lights in my mirror; all traffic in Lane 3 slotting neatly into Lane 2 to let the two police cars through (one black and unmarked, the other a dog patrol in a Volvo). I moved over too. But in front of me was a black 12-reg Vivaro (might have been a Renault or Nissan I suppose) and the police sat on its tail for a mile or so, sirens and blue lights going: did the driver give way?
  • Mitsubishi GDI Carbon build-up 15 Sep 2014 (Forum)
(rough running, poor starting, occasional tappet noise at low revs) A quick look at mitsubushi forums shows that almost everyone with a GDI engine (some volvo's too)has the smae problem, yet Mitsubishi only advise a strip down and clean up at approx £600, or replacement throttle body at much the same price. Is this acceptible in a low mileage, well cared for car.
  • Vauxhall Vectra C - buying a >3 litre car... scouring autotrader 10 Dec 2013 (Forum)
Current Volvo is a bit too asthmatic for towing the caravan, so my cunning plan has been to do an autotrader search for a petrol engined car, 3.0 to 3.9 litre, up to 10 years old, max price £5000.  As you will be aware the site narrows the range of manufacturers for you.
  • Which used lorry? 30 Apr 2011 (Forum)
Some swear by DAF and MAN, some say Mercedes (but parts are expensive apparently.  Have also been advised to steer clear of Ford/ Iveco, Renault and Volvo, but unsure whether there is any real basis to that or just personal bias. Basically looking for something reliable that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to fix if it goes wrong.  (Yes, I know all lorries can be dear to fix, but I imagine some are better than others).
  • 1st baby on the way, £3.5k to spend - suggestions? 31 Jan 2008 (Forum)
The in laws have retired to the south of France - we're in Aberdeen, so a car that could handle THAT journey would be great - but to be honest it might be just way too far to drive. So far I have been looking at Volvo V40's (with high mileage), Citroen Picasso (seem pricey), Renault Scenic (not seen any in our price bracket), Skoda Fabia Estate (top end of budget). I'm open to any and all ideas really ... what car, what age, what to look out for?

  • Stupid Adverts 24 Feb 2005 (Forum)
(TIC comment). The Mitsubishi Colts playing football. The Citroen C4 that turns into a dancing robot. The Volvo ad with people having inane conversations about space suits, life on Mars etc. The people acting like cretins who ring up and ask ?Quote me Happy? I know people will say that at least they?ve made an impact and I remember the brands advertised, but all that?
