  • Crankshaft pulley removal vectra auto 9 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Help! I am trying to replace the water pump on my '97 vectra 2.0 automatic. I can get as far as removing the timing belt, but to do that I have to remove the tensioner. But I can't get at the tensioner bolt as it's behind the crankshaft pulley, which means I have to remove said pulley.

  • Calculating top gear performance? 28 May 2002 (Forum)
Maths is not my strongpoint so I need some guidance on how to work out which gear ratio/final drive combination is likely to be the most long-legged when looking at a particular car on paper. These vary between versions of the same car, particularly, of course, when automatics are brought into the equation. I think I can work out that anything under a 1:1 ratio is an 'overdrive' but final drive ratio presumably then determines the real-life effect when comparing vehicles.

  • Best Back Seats 21 Aug 2001 (Forum)
I was interested by Chris Watson?s comment in the Budget Automatic thread: ?i have never liked mondeo's as the ride in the back feels rather rough, and you can feel vibrations through your back, plus not alot of legroom, but i am 6'6".? I think it?s an often overlooked point that if you are choosing a car for the family and they don?
  • Radar Trap 11 Jul 2001 (Forum)
"Well" says the RAF chap, "I had a couple of Harriers doing a low-level slow navigation exercise in that area. Their defensive radar told them that they had been "painted" by radar which automatically set up a sequence to target an anti-radar missile at the source. Thank your lucky stars that when the system asked the pilot for the OK to let the missile go, he declined"

  • EU wants all cars equipped with emergenc 8 Feb 2005 (Forum)
"The European Union executive unveiled plans Thursday to equip all new cars sold in the EU with an emergency transmitter to ensure rapid medical help in the event of a crash. Around 2,000 lives could be saved a year once the automatic emergency call ("eCall") technology is in place, the European Commission said, targeting a start date of 2009 for the devices. The transmitter would be activated automatically by pressure sensors that would detect a sudden impact, or manually by an injured occupant of the car, and send an SOS via the EU-wide emergency call number 112.
  • VW Starting Problems 27 Jul 2004 (Forum)
and does not misfire but does still surge until the engine is warm. My Uncle seems to think that the second problem is caused by the automatic choke not kicking in at all to help it start from cold and the coughing and spluttering is caused by fuel starvation as the engine is trying to fire but there?s no fuel there as the chokes knackered.
  • Pinking Primera 29 Jan 2004 (Forum)
2001 Primera Sport-Plus 2.0i with CVT-M6 automatic gearbox. Only 22,000 miles. Has been pinking for months and the main-dealer has been unable to sort the problem out. The pinking only happens under very specific conditions.... Generally it is when gently cruising at between 30-40mph, with light or no throttle, when the gearbox will select a very high gear, revs drop to about 1200rpm.
  • Vauxhall Zafira 1.4 Sri turbo auto - How is a turbo with an auto box? 12 Oct 2024 (Forum)
My wife and l like automatic petrol engined cars in a roomy MPV bodystyle, not SUV. Over the yaers, we have got used to Japanese cars with approx 2 litre engines, but to get one now you have to either 'buy old' or 'buy import'.
  • Renault - Should I trust Renault? 21 Jul 2024 (Forum)
So much so we were on the verge of considering a Clio as our second car But at just 3 years old the automatic gear box on the Kadjar has failed resulting in a lengthy visit to the garage (>10 days) as a part (something to do with the clutch??) has to be ordered Thankfully an extended warranty was purchased!
  • Where to buy used cars nowadays? 5 Jul 2024 (Forum)
Where is everyone’s go to place to purchase low priced used cars now? Especially for the hugely popular economical supermini automatic market. Autotrader - usually overpriced by private sellers and salesman if you do see a bargain it’s with a garage with terrible or no reviews in some dodgy area Gumtree - see autotrader and doesn’t seem to be as popular as it used to be for used cars Facebook marketplace - everyone knows about this one.
  • Used Estate Recommendation 1 Jul 2024 (Forum)
Requirements below: - Budget 15-20k - Family car as we have 2 children - Petrol as mainly driving short journeys - Prefer automatic - Preferably less than 4 years old and under 40k miles Having done a bit of research, I narrowed it down to either a Škoda Octavia Estate, Škoda Superb Estate or Mazda 6 Estate. Currently got my eye on something like these: https://www.cinch.co.uk/used-cars/make/model/details/8f6f1aba-317b-446c-b399-252b1762e8e3?
  • Peugeot 308 - Auto petrol intermittent erratic revving / stall 3 Jun 2024 (Forum)
My wife's automatic 1.2 2015 308 is experiencing a strange revving / stalling issue. The engine is revving up slightly or bogging down whilst driving, particularly under 35 mph. Then at very low speeds it has on a couple of occasions stalled (reverse parking for example).
  • PEUGEOT 2008 Allure 1.2L 130hp AT8 - New Peugeot 2008 - Am I in Denial? 30 Mar 2024 (Forum)
So I've spent a month with my new car and I have to say I LOVE IT. The car is relatively nippy, the automatic transmission very smooth and the build quality feels fantastic.  Having said that, I'm still dealing with comments like - 'what, you bought a French car? You're crazy.....' Am I simply in denial, or are reliability/quality issues still an issue with French cars.
  • Can you recommend an upmarket, reliable hybrid SUV 19 Feb 2023 (Forum)
Also, comfort and looks matter. Definitely want it to be comfortable to drive, smooth over potholes etc. I prefer automatic, want high adjustable seats and don't mind a sunroof. I worry about reliability and repair costs once out of warranty. We expect to keep this vehicle for at least 5 years. I would estimate 8000 miles a year and am thinking that a hybrid would be a good choice.
