• BMW 3 Series E46 - Coolant Leak 22 Jun 2010 (Forum)
  BMW 318i Toring E46 54K miles, has a coolant leak around radiator, only appears to leak when temperature activates the fan. The leak source is difficult to locate as it appears to be under the chassis cross member. Any thoughts?

  losing coolant - seems to be a leak on the front of the engine at the left hand side as you look at it - could it be water pump ? any ideas on what it would involve( big job/small job etc.)?

  Hi All, need a bit of advice, I have a 52 plate fiesta 1.25L. 2 months ago it was over heating regularly so I put some K Seal in the Radiatior coolant which resolved the issue. however now there is steam and a hissing noise coming from the radiator coolant screwcap. There is also the same steam coming from the back of the engine cover and a grim smell.

  Hiya, Have just replaced the turbo on my 1 series 120d, while there the tech found a mucky caramel coloured film on top of the coolant, he advised he has not seen this type of thing before, there was nothing in the oil and the engine isn't over heating so I am desperately hoping that it isn't the head gasket! I have read on the web that if you mix coolant types this can happen?

  1995 N Reg 1.4 Polo Had a problem with engine overheating. Thermostat has been replced and new pump. The coolant isn't reaching the radiator, in turn the fan can't come on. We've checked for blockages. Does anyone have any idea why the coolant wouldn't reach the radiator when the main culprits have been replaced?

  Two weeks ago I put in a new radiator. Unfortunately there is trapped air at the thermostat housing. I say this because the coolant temperature dial stays at zero and the temperature sensor for the dial is fixed at the top of the thermostat housing. The coolant temperature dial has moved briefly to it's normal position only after parking the car on a hill though.

  2012 Megane Coupé 1.6dci with an intermittent EML. I’ve had it plugged into a Renault diagnostic laptop which is flagging up ‘secondary coolant heater’, but I’m not convinced it has one. Has anyone got access to a wiring diagram for the car? The Haynes manual doesn’t cover this engine.

  Is there any substitute that can be reliably used, bearing in mind the specific VW anti-corrosive requirements? As a thought - does anyone know what coolant is used in the Ford Galaxy diesel engine as I think this is a VW PD unit. Any help appreciated.

  I Have a 1.9dt 1998 406 which is leaking coolant slowly, it goes from max to the warning light coming on every 1k (3 weeks) any ideas where i could start looking for the leak? should i just carry on topping it up or could their be a bigger problem that is causing this to happen

  I cant refill with coolant without air locking. The system will only take 3 litres out of 5 initially and when i run the engine, it just boils and overflows(cap left off). Can anyone offer any advice please?

    I've not noticed any leaks or major loss of coolant prior lockdown.   I've topped the tank back up to its minimum level with a litre of antifreeze - is this ok, in that my tank isn't going to get flooded by the missing coolant during lockdown?

  How do I get rid of this? Before I changed the coolant there was no noise. I followed the correct procedure during the coolant change, the radiator and heater matrix (behind engine) bleed points were only closed when coolant appeared. I re-did the coolant change, again the same noise.

  I'm being very pedantic here, before anyone says it - but my car was paid for by a sum of money I can't see myself coming to again any time soon, so it has to last. I changed the coolant, didn't get all of it out and my Dad flushed it through with a watering can (I wasn't going to do this myself as I'd bought de-ionised water to use but what's done is done) So, my cooling system now has a mix of pure water, garden tap water, and an unknown amount of coolant.

  Hi, I need to top up the coolant in my Jazz and the local dealers don't seem to be able to supply the "long life type 2" stuff that the Jazz seems to wants. Given the car is only six months old I suspect that it didn't have enough coolant from day 1 - nice PDI from the Honda dealer!

  K reg 107K miles. I am going to change the coolant soon. I am led to believe that these engines are rather sensitive to coolant or lack of it. The Haynes manual graphically describes how to replace the coolant but my car does not have a bottom drain plug on the radiator nor does it have the vertical filling point on the top hose.

  In the Car-by-Car Breakdown HJ has put the following comment. >What to Watch Out For >Make sure the 1.4 8v is not losing coolant and has not overheated through loss of coolant in the past, possibly due to friction on the bottom hose as a result of soft engine mountings. I had been noticing that I was loosing coolant in my car - not excessively but I was having to top it up every 1,500 miles or so to keep above the "min" level.

  I took it to the main dealer thinking it might be a gasket problem. They tested the coolant pressure which they said was ok after running the engine for an hour. They then fitted a new cap on the coolant tank just in case the loss was due to evaporation. This didn't work so I'm still slowly losing coolant.
