Overall reliability

Great looking, well equipped, comfortable but limited practicality.

Bought as a low mileage car fully kitted out with winter pack, xenium pack, keyless drive etc. It really looks the part and has plenty of toys inside - on paper and to look at a fantastic car.
It drives very well, the T3 engine has plenty of torque from low revs so it's easy to use around town with enough power on the open road to make it fun. Fuel economy is in the 38/40mpg range which is OK.
It is a very comfortable car with the best seats of any make out there - try sitting in a BMW 1 Series or an Audi A3 for any length of time and then try the V40 and you'll be amazed how much more comfortable the Volvo is.
The build quality is very good in line with the best Germans. Volvo are a premium manufacturer and I really notice this when I get into more "mainstream" cars which clearly use cheaper materials.
So a great choice as a premium hatchback but it does have a coupe of issues buyers need to be aware of. It is really only a four seater - the two main rear seats are pushed closer together which makes the middle seat very narrow. Fantastic for four people, a nightmare if you want to carry a fifth. Also the boot is not that big, especially if you have a space saver spare wheel which makes the boot even smaller.
It's had a couple of things fixed under warranty - a leaking gasket in the coolant system and a "module" replaced after the electronics went haywire on a couple of occasions. Both known issues and actually identified and fixed by the dealer at service time.
Overal I'm really impressed by the car and would choose it again as long as it fits your needs from a practical point of view.
