Great car but engine will cost you a fortune if you have a 1.6TDI with the EA189 engine
Car has been great except for problem that I now discover is common to VAG 1.6TDI with the EA189 engine. Apparently EGRs have been a problem with VAG 1.6TDIs for a long time, long before the NOx emissions scandal broke. It has been suggested the VAG should replace them free of charge because the sheer number of failures suggests that the parts are fundamentally not up to the job.
It seems the high emissions of this engine before the NOx emissions fix was one of the causes of the EGRs failing so frequently on 1.6TDIs.
Mine has gone , costing me £65 for diagnostic and then £775.71 after miserly goodwill from Skoda/dealer.
Avoid cars with this engine at all costs!!
