Mazda 6 or Ford Mondeo for a 50-mile daily commute?

I currently run a Mazda 6 2.0 TS2 estate (56 plate) - a previous recommendation of yours - and cannot decide whether to stay with Mazda or switch to something like a Mondeo or Insignia. My annual mileage is between 16,000 and 20,000 with a daily commute of 50 miles, almost all on A-roads, so I would also appreciate your view on whether this would favour diesel over petrol.

You definitely need a diesel. We got 51mpg from a Mondeo ECOnetic and 55mpg from an Insignia ECOflex, but the Mondeo had better roadholding and was nicer to drive. I don't think you'll do as well with a Mazda 6 2.2 diesel, though that engine is chain cam with no timing belt that needs changing. Mondeo diesel engines all retuned to 115, 140 and 163 outputs from next month's facelift.
