Why isn't my wife qualifying for a no-claims discount?

What exactly is a no-claims bonus? My wife has recently bought a small car and applied for insurance quoting a full no-claims bonus. For the last four years she has been a named driver on my Motability car insurance and prior to that was the main driver and policy holder on various insurance policies since 1996, when I had a serious crash in a company car and was medically retired. She has therefore made "No claims" on any insurance policy, a fact that could be proved by entering her full name and date of birth into the Motor Insurer’s Database.

They have claimed that we are being given a no-claims discount on the Motability car and would not listen to the fact that the amount I pay depends on the car not the driver, which can be proved by the fact that the price quoted for a car is available on the website before you have even given your driving record. They say she cannot claim no-claims discount on two cars at the same time, which she is not doing obviously. She is therefore having to pay full price for her insurance.

There is no such thing as a "No-Claims Bonus". You can get a "No-Claims Discount", which is self-explanatory. Different insurers have different criteria for this, so different discounts are earned for each year without being involved in any sort of claim, whether at fault or not. NCDs only apply to the policyholder. If the policyholder remains uninsured, entitlement can lapse after one year uninsured or two years uninsured, depending on insurer. The MID only goes back about five years.
