Can you recommend a comfortable car for long motorway journeys?

We are in our eighties and our next car will probably be our last. What is most important is ride comfort and comfortable seats. We do about 11,000-12,000 miles a year in the UK, mainly on motorways. At present we run a 2008 BMW 1 Series. We are looking at Mercedes-Benz A and B-Class, Audi A3 and newer BMW 1 Series and would appreciate your guidance on a suitable automatic vehicle.

Of these, a new B-Class with the new dual clutch automatic transmission will be best because of the more upright seating and easier entry and egress, but you have to be careful about choice of wheels and tyres. Go for 16-inch wheels with 205/55 R16 tyres to get decent ride quality. Otherwise, consider a smaller Ford B-Max 1.6 Powershift.
