Which comfortable small car for long and short trips?

I would like a small car, maybe new or newish. I cover two main journeys - to London (about 80 miles round trip) and to Dorset (about 180 miles round trip) - and short local journeys. I enjoy comfort and would like some ideas. Also, my son wants to buy a Qashqai - is that the best?

It's hard to beat a Mazda 2 1.3TS2 for pleasure of driving, economy and reasonably relaxed cruising on the motorway. Qashqais only make sense on 15-inch or 16-inch wheels with deep profile tyres. On 17-inch or 18-inch wheels with low profile tyres, they do not ride speed humps and potholes well.
