What's the best petrol 4WD for fuel efficiency?

I need a small four-wheel drive SUV that is good on fuel. A petrol preferably but I don't mind whether it's an automatic or manual. I had an Audi Q5 and now have an A3 but I need to drive over fields. I drive 20,000 miles per year so needs to be efficient.

We rate the Suzuki Vitara as a reliable and capable 4x4 but, despite being relatively car-like to drive, you might find its road manners lacking compared to your Audi Q5 and A3. The Volvo XC40 is excellent and would be fine for 20k miles a year, although waiting lists are long.
