My 80 year old mother in law has expressed her intention to buy a new car. She currently drives a 2015 '64' plate Ford Ka which has about 40k on the clock. She sees impending bills on the horizon - last MoT required two new tyres and a ball joint - so wants to buy a brand new car to 'avoid any big bills'... -

'luxury' supermini ? 22 Jun 2006 (Forum)
Good quality ICE (or easily upgradable) 6. Bright 'luxurious' interior (cream or light grey leather ideal) 7. Reasonable running costs. 8. Max £10k - if used, max 3 years old. I can't think of anything that comes close. My Yaris scores well on 1, 2, 4, 7, and 8, but poorly on the others. Most cars that score well on 3, 5 and 6 are too big. -
New motoring offences 1 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Just caught a short piece on the news that there is going to be a series of new motoring offences which include (IIRC) "causing death by careless driving" (max. sentence 5 years) and "causing death whilst driving without an MOT, insurance etc." (max. sentence 2 years). Whilst I'm sure many people feel there have been serious gaps/weaknesses in the law which have often leading to apparently grossly inappropriate sentences, are these new laws going to make any real differences or are they just an example of an unpopular government kite-flying? -

Advice on replacement family car 16 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Whilst I don't mind it and it fits the space requirements, I'm not convinced that we need a 4x4. Am thinking something like a 2.2 diesel S-Max. Better value second hand, huge inside (although granted don't need 7 seats, but useful on occassion). Any views? This car will be a keeper for some time so depreciation not that high on the agenda. -
Mondeo unless you know better. 18 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Hi everyone, Would appreciate advice here! Looking to buy and run a car for the next 3 years. £4,000 max budget, 20,000 miles a year, easy on motorways where it will spend 90% of its life is a priority as well as honest maintenance costs. It needs to be Mondeo or Vectra size and must have AC. Prefer petrol over diesel as at this price point there seems to be a premium for diesel and far less choice. -

Buying a second hand automatic 20 Jan 2020 (Forum)
My wife has recently found a new job where she's doing a lot more mileage than previously, and she's always wanted an automatic (where she comes from they're the norm although she passed in UK on a manual). We currently have a paid off Ford Fiesta 2013, and we're planning on trading that in for an automatic. Including the trade in, our budget will be around £8k max. I've been mostly looking at Japanese petrol automatics, and I've read a CVT is generally a pretty safe bet. -
Mazda 3 auto - Which smaller car for my pensioner parents? 5 Aug 2014 (Forum)

Returning to UK with new baby. What car for £6K? 26 Mar 2010 (Forum)
Isn't too big (we'll be sharing the car and my wife likes small cars!). On the bigger side of things, I've looked at Ford C-Max/Focus estate. On the smaller side of things, the Honda Jazz or Nissan Note. If anyone had any suggestions, I'd love to hear from you. Thanks for reading!
