  newbie to the forum here so looking for advice or just comments on buying a used 3 door hatchback. I like reasonably sporty, reliable, 35+mpg, min engine 1.4 max 2 litre. Prefer petrol only because government is determined to punish diesel owners over next few years. I only do about 6000 miles a year and I am 55 but share it with my daughter who is 22.   Have a long list ..in no particular order or preference lol   As I'm new..be gentle haha   Suzuki Swift Audi A3 Ford Focus Volvo C30 Vauxhall Astra Honda Civic Renault Megane Mazda2

    I'm going a bit round and round in circles on what to go for, so any help or thoughts appreciated.  The list at the moment is: Nissan Note circa 2007/2008 - 1.6 Ford C Max 2006/07 - 1.6 Skoda Roomster 2007 - 1.4  Peugeot 307 SW - 2007/08 - 1.6   Have I missed any obvious other candidates?  Any strong thoughts / experiences that might lead me in the right direction?

  hi son has a 57 plate peugeot 407 coupe 2.0 diesel, the same engine i believe has in my 2.0 ford focus, 58 plate. my focus has a pre-heater which when outside temp is at a certain low temp, setting the temp control to max the pre-heater activates. not sure what that actually entails, i.e. i don't think the engine warms up any quicker but i think it works on the interior heater. so on driving first thing on a icy morning the car interior heats up quicker. does anyone know if the 407 has a similar setup as i cannot find any info on it in the owners manual. thanks

  I travel by air more often than a normal lay person (maybe 20 to 30 flights PA), and I honestly would not have boarded a 737 MAX 8 after the Ethiopian disaster at the weekend, there were just too many similarities which were obvious just a few hours after the terrible event.

  I changed the oil filter and engine oil a month ago. Engine was topped up to 3/4 of from max mark. It is still approx 3/4 still. I hear this clicking/tapping noise when I let go off the accelerator pedal each time. Any ideas on what this could be? Is it because oil is not up to max mark? Everything looks ok, coolant up to max mark, no signs of oil leak or leak at cyclinder head, etc.

  We've been having intermittent problems with loss of power, not able to get above 35mph with my foot to the floor with max revs of 2000rpm. In addition we've got huge amounts of black smoke from the exhaust and under the bonnet and fumes in the car which smell like exhaust. Also loss of power steering. The car has done a lot of miles, over 220 000, is this the end for it, or can it be fixed?

• Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 05 1.6tdci Bonnet lock mechanism / cautionary tale 14 May 2008 (Forum)
  I transferred the barrel & installed it. However in talking to a mechanic I learnt that this is an ?upgraded? part to allow Ford to claim a level of compliance with Thatcham. Since it is effectively a short cable bent through an S curve, its quite stiff to turn even when new. He informed me that they fail occasionally mostly due to corrosion and / or the lock becoming stiff.

  It is accompanied by lots of smoke and if I try and accelerate a twittering noise similar to the waste gates you hear on rally cars (at least that?s what I think it is). This lasts for a 10-15 seconds and then disappears. Any ideas?

  Guru's My car knowledge inept son believed the only thing you had to put into an engine was petrol, Therefore the lack of any form of lubricant (and coolant) has resulted in crank damage.. It is currently a 1.4 Zetec-S, a breakers locally has the 1.25 version. My question, would you know if the 1.25 will drop straight in? Would the 1.4 gearbox/ecu etc be suitable? Many thanks, Stuart.

  Having changed the ht leads and plugs on my focus i have still got a really bad and unnerving rough idle the car runs 'lumpy' (sounds like a vw camper) and loss of power on any sort of incline,although once the revs pass 2k it seems to clear but the power issue (hesitation) is still there..
