The engine is Ford's well-known 1,988cc belt-driven twin-cam Zetec/Duratec modified to deliver 127kW (170bhp) at a heady 7,000rpm and 196Nm (145 lb ft) torque from 2,500 to 5,500rpm.

Standard equipment includes 16-inch seven spoke alloy wheels, leather and Alcantara upholstered sports seats, electronic climate control, a leather-upholstered sports steering wheel (with tiptronic shift controls for automatic models) and a Driver’s Information System.

  The standard Evo VIII puts out 276bhp at 6,500rpm and 282 lb ft torque at 3,500rpm on 97Ron + , now fed through a 6-speed rather than 5-speed box. 0-60 comes up in 5 seconds and top speed has had to be restricted to 157mph, about 7mph up on the max I ever had from an Evo VI or Evo VII on the Millbrook bowl. Electronic goodies inclide Active Centre Differential and Super Active Yaw Control and the driver has the option of optimised settings for driving on Tarmac, Gravel or Snow.

  The previous record for an automobile sold in Arizona was held by a Ferrari 250LM, which sold for £7.4m at RM’s 2015 Arizona Biltmore sale. The Mercedes is one of the most desirable classics of the interwar years.   To celebrate the 50 th anniversary of the Renault 16, Team Renault Classic has entered two 16TSs into this year’s Monte Carlo historic rally. The car, which was named Car of the Year in 1966, will start the 2015 event in Reims, northern France, on 30 Jan. Car number 16 will be drive by ex-Formula 1 driver Michel Leclère. The winner of the 1969 Premier Pas Dunlop Gordini Cup will be joined in the car by Laurent Lamat and Gilles Dubois, winners of a competition organised by FCRA (Fédération des Clubs Renault et Alpine).
