  • VW Passat 1.9TDI 130bhp 05 model (B5) - Flywheel - Dual Mass or Solid ? 28 Apr 2010 (Forum)
What I need advice on is if there is much of a difference in fitting a replacement dual mass flywheel / clutch setup, as opposed to a solid flywheel / clutch setup.   The Solid flywheel conversion is almost half the price of the dual mass setup, but which is best ? Saving on price initally sounds great but is it a false economy ?

What are the advantages / disadvantages of them? Thank you
  • Mitsubish Shogun 3.2 DiD - Dual mass flywheel 30 Jun 2011 (Forum)
The dual mass flywheel on my Shogun has failed. Would anyone recommend replacing it with a solid flywheel conversion ? Apparently the kits are supplied with an Exedy clutch plate equipped with larger springs to replacing the dampening effect of the DMF.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 04 2.0 Dual Mass Flywheel 30 Sep 2008 (Forum)
My car has just developed a clutch / starter problem, and the problem has been diagnosed as a Dual Mass flywheel failure. To rectify this it requires complete new clutch assembly new dual mass flywheel and possible new starter motor. My Question:- Can the dual mass flywheel be replaced with a solid flywheel without causing any future problems.
  • Citroen C5 2.0HDI 110 2004 - Solid flywheel vs Dual Mass Flywheel 6 Oct 2016 (Forum)
I have read lots of people have DMF failed is not so reliable is prefer to replace to solid flywheel. When I use to own Peugeot 306 2.0HDI 90 it has got a solid flywheel which I never had a issue from 70,000 miles till 245,000 miles on the clock. So it make me wonder if I took off from Peugeot 406 2.0HDI with 90bhp which has got a solid flywheel and swap to my Citroen C5 to stop get other problem in the future.

  • SEAT Alhambra 1.9 tdi 55 plate - Dmf to smf 8 Mar 2021 (Forum)
Hi I am thinking of changing my dual mass flywheel to a solid mass  flywheel.  But  I was wondering will it cause problems or damage to my car please? I have heard that some people  do have problems and some don't.  My car is remapped so it's quite nippy .thanks
  • 1.9TDI. 90BHP 108000 miles - VW Sharen clutch 21 Apr 2011 (Forum)
Hi, i'm having problems with the clutch, it seems to be making a vibrating noise when reversing, someone told me it might be the dual mass flywheel  packing up. These seem to be an arm and a leg to get done. But there is a solid flywheel you can put on instead.  Just wondering if this would make much difference to driiving this car.
  • Ford Fiesta (2002 - 2008) - 03 1.4 Clutch, dual mass fly wheel 19 Jan 2010 (Forum)
My daughters TDCI 1.4 seems to be ready for a clutch; this is not slipping at the moment but is biting at the very top of pedal, the car seems to stall without too much coaxing when in reverse mainly but will obviously stall also in forward motion as well. Does this indicate a problem with the dual mass flywheel (if fitted) and how would i be able to tell which type? - (DMF or solid version.) many thanks in anticipation.
  • Citroen Berlingo Multispace (1998 - 2010) - 05 1.6 longevity of 1.6HDi in comparison to 2.0Hdi 5 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Does it have particulate filter or dual mass flywheel on the Berlingo version of this engine? Any particular reliability issues? thanks i.a.
  • Ford Mondeo - Mondeo 04 2.0 TDCi clutch problems? 15 Jan 2011 (Forum)
The clutch feels fine otherwise, gears are easily changed, no noticable change in performance or MPG...would this sound like the clutch (or flywheel) is on the way out? It's a Ford mondeo Mkiii 2.0 TDCi 130bhp, got about 79k on the clock. I've heard the Dual Mass Flywheel is lucky to last that long, so if it was on the way out, I'll look at replacing it with a solid flywheel kit as I intend to run this baby into the ground!
  • Skoda Octavia I (1998 - 2004) - 03 1.9 Tdi... solid? 28 May 2009 (Forum)
He has found an 03 1.9 TDi from the same specialist garage (clearly an excellent place) that supplied the T, fsh and clean as a whistle but nearly 100,000 miles. Is the 1.9 Tdi unit decently solid or not? I doubt if the car has a DPF, but does it have one of these absurdly fragile dual mass flywheels, and is there any risk of the fuel pump going? It will spend quite a lot of time not being used, and most of the use it gets will be pootling.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 05 2.0 TDCI Flywheel/clutch replaced, now gearbox 26 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Hello I got bit by DMF failure 2 months ago (failed starter caused by getting clogged up with swarf from disintegrating dual-mass flywheel/clutch); I ran the car on the replacement starter till it started sticking again... and then the clutch went. By which time I had enough money together to order a solid flywheel with Valeo clutch and slave cylinder.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 04 2.0 tdci Strong clutch pedal 17 Jan 2009 (Forum)
as the cost of replacing the clutch, flywheel etc is going to be £600++ i want to be more certain that having the work done will actually rectify the problem. I also asked about changing to a solid flywheel, which i understand will make the biting point more noticeable as it will not be "dampened" as before, however i could probably live with that if the clutch spring was lighter!!
  • DMF's and the van connection 14 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Many threads here about the fragility and the cost of dual mass flywheels, which i confess i didn't know anything about till probably 12 months ago, thanks to the good chaps here. I always where poss have proper auto's so haven't wrecked one yet. There's advice to start the vehicle rolling on tickover and then to make the smoothest of changes, which is admirable, but i for one would be bored to death in minutes, and large cities would grind to a halt, and i'm sure that 99% of drivers would be the same.
  • Honda Accord Tourer - Dull, dull, dull 4 Mar 2011 (Forum)
well yes it does, but as a complete petrol head I need to enjoy my cars and the Honda is merely "transport". Why did I go for petrol? 'cos very concerned about high mileage diesel problems with dual mass flywheels, disintegrating turbos, blocked diesel particulate filters and the like. The Honda is worth about 4.5k I reckon with 12 months T&T - so what would you get if you sold the Honda and wanted something with decent shove and better economy?
