Vauxhall/Opel/Holden Astra G / Mk 4 / TS - Cooling system warning light (Coolant temp sensor) 18 Jan 2018 (Forum)
I've got a 2001 Astra with the X/Z18XE Engine, with the Simtec 71.1 ecu. It's throwing a cooling system warning light, but nothing actually seems to be wrong with the car. I wouldn't care, but I want to sell it. Coolant is pumping, the fans are turning on and off, the A/C works great even on a 43°C day like today. -
2008 Ford Focus - Undetectable Intermittent Starting Problem 16 Mar 2017 (Forum)
- 2008 Ford Focus 1.6 Style - Auto - 30,000 Miles Short version of what’s wrong with the car and important notes: - Mostly heat related starting problem - The car drives perfectly - There is no injector pulse when fault is occurring, the most important info here is wiggling the wiring harness WILL get the car to start when the car is NOT hot, however when the engine has warmed to normal operating temp wiggling wires will not have any affect which I’m guessing is due to thermal expansion. - ECU has been swapped out with another new one and problem persisted. - Disconnecting the ECT sensor will get the car to start almost 99% reliably. - ECT sensor has been replaced. - Crank sensor has been replaced. -
Volvo V50. 05 plate - Anti skid message brake failure, immobilser activa 30 Oct 2015 (Forum)
Would like heads up though if anyone thinks the work to vehicle and problems i am now experiencing are connected or just a co-incidence.I know from reading some websites this kind of problem is often attributed to CEM. Would like to explore all other possibilities first as I only had new ecu 5 months ago!!! Should say when I was at garage today they checked battery for load etc and alternator all appeared ok. Would welcome any advice Many thanks Rachel -
Ford Mondeo MK III TDCI 130 (6) Saloon - Alternator/ Battery charging problem 23 Jul 2015 (Forum)
What I would like to know is what the likely cause of the battery light being on is, would fuse 99 have knocked something else out? Is a non-genuine Ford alternator a problem with the ECU and charging? Is wiring the likely problem and if so where an what order should it be checked? Any help would be genuinely appreciated, I know there a lot of posts on this already so if I needed to be pointed to one please do so. thanks for reading. -
Mk3 vw golf - Can anyone help me with my mk3 vw golf automatic?? 1 Feb 2015 (Forum)
. £70 later and more head scratching they told us the car was too old to plug into their computers for a proper reading but from the info they could get they thought it might be the multi-selector switch that sits on the top of the gearbox and tells the gear box what gear it's in. £50 later and a new switch still not working. The only thing we can think of now is the ECU needs replacing. Is there anything we are missing before we fork out for one of those too? We can't find any wiring diagrams for a mk3 auto and the Haynes manual is useless! Can anyone help please? -
Independents vs main dealers, round 48 4 Jan 2013 (Forum)
The independent's comment about 'fallacy' of latest software is interesting. I've often wondered about this, having agreed to an ecu firmware upgrade on a past car, a BMW 120d, with a charge attached. If the software is resolving issues and the car is under warranty, shouldn't that be free? Perhaps the next time a dealer recommends a software upgrade, ask to see the release notes, see what it's meant to fix or improve. -
Citroen C5 (2001 - 2008) - 01 2.2 HDi EGR Valve and Swirl Chamber Diaphragm 22 Aug 2012 (Forum)
I have the dreaded ESP/Anti-pollution fault which only comes on every time and i mean every time!!! i use a dual carriage way or motorway and cruise at 70mph. I have had the ECU faults read by a friend who does my MOT's and the only faults recorded were; 1, Glow Plug Fault 2, Mass Air Flow Sensor Fault 3, Swirl Chamber Fault The Glow plug fault does not as yet trouble me as the car starts fine even on a cold start and also as they seem to be a bit of a sod to get to, i'll wait for warmer weather to start that one. -
Pug 306 to 307 - Car upgrade, have I made a mistake? 11 Dec 2011 (Forum)
And because of the amount of computers and sensors on the HDI I decided it was wise to seek out a replacement before a wire for the ECU itself or something equally fatal also rotted. So I have now bought a 52 plate 307 2.0 HDI only to see many references to these ALSO having crappy wire used in the loom. So now I am wondering if as much as I like the car if the experienced professionals on here with experience of peugeots of this kind of age think I just just ditch the new car right away and maybe look at something else like perhaps a focus although to be perfectly honest I am half tempted to go back to something more "simple" like a rover 200 series, maybe the streetwise on a 53/54 plate due to the lower level of computerisation and complexity (and cheapness of spares). -
Fiat Punto ELX - Punto steering problem fixed! 23 Sep 2010 (Forum)
I had tried all of the suggestions such as connections, fuses, new battery, battery connections, made sure the alternator was charging OK, earth connections, cleaned out the steering ECU, no improvement. Picked up on a couple of posts on different forums where people had solved the problem by re-soldering some of the joints on a circuit board inside the steering motor, so eventually took the plunge and had a look. -
1999 R reg Chrysler Grand Voyager 3.3 LE LPG - Chrysler Grand Voyager 3.3 LE LPG help wanted... 10 Jun 2010 (Forum)
I called the RAC guy to see if he could locate the problem and he chcked the spark plugs and fuel injectors and said that they werent getting a pulse which is why it was misfiring so badly. His overall diagnosis was that it must be the ECU that is failing because strangely the engine management light was not identifying the problems with the engine. The Chrysler garage want £95 to run the same tests that the RAC man did, and they have already started indicating quotes of over £2000. -
Vauxhaull Corsa CDTI - Black smoke 1 Jun 2010 (Forum)
I am starting to think its mechanical but as the smoke is Black and the compression is 350psi (cold and dry) that kind of rules out Piston rings, There is no oil in the water or water in the oil and no excessive pressure coming from anywhere so that kind of rules out the head gasket. Could of course be the ECU but when its pluged in to tech 2 it works fine so not sure about that. I know the head gasket was replaced not long ago so could some thing be put back wrong like the gasket be on upside down or the head torqued up to tight and cracked or some thing like that? -
Toyota Avensis (2003 - 2008) - Post-service - poor starting and fuel economy 6 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Took my '56 2.2 (150) D4-D Avensis for its 40k service on Saturday. When I dropped the keys off at the service desk they explained that they also had to do an ECU re-program, as recommended by the factory. I'm not delighted with the results..... Symptom 1 - On the five or six occasions I have started the car since the service it has started extremely poorly. -
Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - TDDi 2002 - Fuel Pump problem ? 7 Nov 2007 (Forum)
They seem a little reluctant to respond and confirm that IF I spent all this money, it would absolutely 100% cure the problem :-) In addition, they have also gone a bit 'fuzzy' over my questioning around whether they have actually read the ECU on the Fuel Pump itself, which I am told is very important! The other information I want to share with the forum, is that they claim that so far, they have spent THREE AND A HALF HOURS diagnosing and test driving the vehicle and the bill so far stands at just under £300 - BEFORE they do any work - is this a rip off or what AND as stated, they don't seem keen to offer me a guarantee that it will fix the problem!! -

Audi high idling and cutting problem. 1 Apr 2006 (Forum)
Although after doing this they said the car was fixed. When I said it wasn't they started saying I also need a new ECU. One other thing I noticed is that when the air conditioning is on the car seems to only warm up to 75-80 degrees Celsius ( on the dash gauge). It used to always go to 90 degrees Celsius after a short drive. -
Tyre speed rating surprise 28 Jun 2005 (Forum)
As it happens, on my car the factory electronic speed limit (137mph) has been removed as a result of the BSR software that I installed, but unless I got lucky with the tyres (I doubt it) it makes me wonder why Volvo bothered with such an odd limit in the first place. Even if ECU software is considered to be 'global' and in some markets lower rated (perhaps winter) tyres will be fitted, it's still a might odd maximum speed to choose for a limiter. -
Leon STDi - Temp Sensor & Economy 1 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I have a few questions... 1. is the sensor likely to be knackered providing an inaccurate reading back to the ECU. 2. I have had this car for four years since new and covered almost 100K miles in it. It has always taken longer to reach normal operating temperature than any of my other cars, including its VW Golf cousin with identical engine. -
VW Golf 1.8 timing question 21 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Having now moved my distributor (which the mechanic states was seized in place - factory anti-tamper seal possibly), does this now mean that my engine is correctly timed, or are there other parts in my distributor which is confusing my ECU even more? The guy who does my servicing is very honest and reasonable, and has always made a very good job of my cars before. But like everyone, he is human and humans do make mistakes. If I went back to him with some feedback that what he'd done was wrong, he'd be happy to put it right I'm sure. -
Peugeot 406 Diesel Playing Up 3 Nov 2002 (Forum)

Lights, Complex????? 11 Mar 2002 (Forum)
I then phoned the Dealer in the Lake District that I bought my car from who informed me that they also had the same trouble and found that the ECU had to be told to activate the wiring even though there is no mention anywhere in Land Rovers information. They would do it for me free but with it being a 160 mile round trip suggested trying a nearer dealer to avoid the fuel costs.
