Buying advice needed: Family car - thinking ahead 14 Jul 2014 (Forum)
About me: 43, live in London. Drive mainly short journeys but coupled with the odd long haul run up the M40 to my parents in Oxford. I'd like to long drives in France each year, but my wife isn't keen. I'm happy to buy a nearly new or 3 year old vehicle which I would run till it falls ot pieces. -
Mazda 2 - Mazda 2 1.4 Diesel - Cutting out when cold 8 Jun 2014 (Forum)
I have just bought a cheap late 2003 Mazda 2 1.4 diesel with 100,000 miles which I believe is based on the Fiesta 1.4 TDCi engine. I have an issue where I start the car first thing in the morning and it runs for about 2 seconds. It then cuts out and will not start. If I prime the fuel using the hand primer in the engine bay I can see air bubbles moving in the clear fuel line. It will then start and run fine. -
Vauxhall Signum 2006 1.9 cdti 120 - Seized engine after clutch failure? 31 Mar 2014 (Forum)
Whilst driving it, the clutch starting to crunch away and the clutch pedal sank, screeching noise followed by me rolling to the side of the road. Engine run sweetly before this, and carried on running without problem (with the exception of screeching clutch failure!). Then switched engine off AA attending, they put it in gear and tried to start it, the car stalled. -
Renault Clio - Renault Clio engine shutsdown 24 Sep 2013 (Forum)
Hi, my daughter has a 2002 Clio 1.4 Auto. It runs fine for about an hour, then an engine light comes on and it drops power completely... very dangerous on the highway. If you stop and restart the car it seems to reset and run OK for a while then does the same thing... could be related to temp?. -
2001 peugeot 206 1.4i - engine managment light 13 Jul 2013 (Forum)
i own a 2001 peugeot 206 1.4i , i was driving it along the road all fine then the eml ( engine managment light ) came on and the car was also running a bit rough , so i did the wise one to make sure that what i thought was wrong with the was right and called the rac , the rac arrived ask what went wrong so i told the mechanic so then he went to his van and brought out a brand new ignition coil pack and swapped mine for the new one , but the car still running rough and the eml was still flashing so the rac man ran a diagnotic test and the test turned up with a problem which i thought , the injectors , so i drove home stripped out the injectors refurbed them by cleaning them with petrol toothbrush and a needle ialso used a woman's emery board to sand the wire conection's on the back of the injectors and replaced all the rubber gromets due to 2 of them being perished and one being split , i then rebuilt the injector rail and refitted it to the car started the car and the car was running sweet but now the eml was on constant so i purchsed my own dianostic machine switched off the eml ran a dianostic test and everything is now really sweet and no more problems . i thought i would share this for anyone that has a pug 206 . -
Ford Mondeo estate 2006 Tdci 130 - Mondeo diesel - smoke on startup 26 Apr 2013 (Forum)
The car was serviced by the book until about 4 years old, and annually since then. All done by local Ford dealer. Last service a month ago. Car starts first time and runs well, with plenty of power and nicely smooth. Fuel consumption has been between 40 and 50 mpg since purchase. However, over the last 9 months it has started to smoke a bit on startup. The engine starts fine, but for the first 10 seconds or so it seems to run very rough with a noisy rattle, and it puts out a fair bit of white smoke, which smells very dieselly, like an old railway locomotive. -

Help Deciding New & Unusual/Rare Cheap-To-Run Car 24 Jun 2011 (Forum)
But it also needs to be cheap to relatively cheap to run. Reason being is I only passed my test last year! (currently 23, yes I know I passed late!). I am looking at a budget of around £12,000 maximum. -
VW Golf 1.9 tdi / 1.6 petrol approx 03 plate - Diesel or Petrol 11 Feb 2011 (Forum)
also on some runs the engine may not fully warm up. i appreciate that my driving patterns will not be ideal for a diesel, but my brothers 306 1.9td seems to cope well with similar driving habits. whilst i can live with a petrol i would much prefer a diesel. thank you to all posters in advance. -
Citroen saxo 1.4i auto - Sluggish acceleration problems 8 Feb 2011 (Forum)
I have recently renewed the headgasket and had the head skimmed, as before it had a over heating problem, I had previously before renewing the head gasket also replaced the lambda sensor, coolant temp sensor and crankcase sensor but these didn't make any difference so I went for the complete strip down and replaced the gasket, which despite the current fault sorted the initial running problem out. The car runs perfectly in idle and when you dip the throttle in neutral there is no hesitation or misfire, only once you've put it into drive (put load on the engine) and try to pull away does the fault become aparent. -
1989 ford escort 1.6 CVH - Engine trouble 23 Nov 2010 (Forum)
I left it for 10 mins and went back, i noticed that one of the HT leads was loose so connected it back up and tried to start it again. This time it started no problem but now it runs very lumpy as if its sometimes running only on 3 cylinders and sounds very tappety, also the light are still dimmer than they should be. Anyone have any ideas whats up? Luckily i bought it off a friend and i know that he will take it back and/or repair it for me unfortunately though that would mean driving it back the 110 miles or having to get it transported. -
Offroading on country paths 9 Jul 2010 (Forum)
They are not safe for horses, bikes, walkers or runners due to the deep ruts and uneven surface. I've tried cycling, but gave up. I've tried running but gave up. I even went running down one steep path that is just about passable and my way was blocked by a 4x4 coming up the hill. I had to climb up a steep bank, and sidle along at a 45 degree angle to get past. -
excellent result with in car camera 26 Jun 2010 (Forum)
Drove striaght home ( 4 mins)& rung the Police who within minuest arrested this Yob with the help of CCTV in the town. My main concern was that if the event was captured on CCTV it may of looked like a hit & run. The police duly arrived within minuets & I was able to show them the incar camera footage ( roadhawk) showing the hooligan running diagonally at the side of the car from the opposite side of the road! -
Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 00 1.8 High idle speed and over revving 24 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Ive checked the cable which is free and smooth running. Ive had it diagnosticly checked and no fault codes are standing. Checked for air leaks, none found.. After a little research, i found a common problem to be the Idle Air Control Valve, which I replaced.. it made little difference if any. -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 99 2.0 HDi P0230 Not starting. Injectors not firin 2 Dec 2009 (Forum)
I did a DTC scan today and got: P0230 Fuel Pump Primary Circuit Malfunction (yet other pugs with this code still run?) P0380 Glow Plug/Heater CKT A Malfunction (Pending) Whatever 'Pending' means with DTC's?!?! I'm totally stuck and was hoping this would be a good car to resolve and use...proving me wrong! Lift pump works fine, it runs for approx 10secs with ignition on and then when i try and start the car, the lift pump runs again. -
Skoda Octavia II (2004 - ) - Long term caretaking 17 Aug 2009 (Forum)
After the great Sedona story, settled on a new Octavia 1.9 PD 105hp, have looked at the HJ running in advice. I am looking to run this a long time 10yrs +, hence I chose the PD over the CR diesels. It will go onto variable service intervals which might mean up to 2 years before first oil change. -
Peugeot Partner Combi (2001 - 2004) - 03 2.0HDI Poor Economy / Low Power 29 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I have recently purchased a 2003 Peugeot Partner 2.0 HDI (90), and having now filled the tank up twice, I'm beginning to think maybe the car isn't performing as well as it should be. Economy on a long steady 70 to 80mph run came out at 38mpg. The second tank has been steady local runs, which have come out at 35mpg. Overall, this seems poor to me, not least because someone else I know with a Berlingo 2.0 HDI of the same era reckons they achieve over 50mpg on a long run. -
Peugeot 205 (1983 - 1997) - 88 1.9GTi - Misfiring after running out of fuel 17 Jun 2009 (Forum)

Renault Laguna (1994 - 2001) - 95 2.0 M Reg - Weird wiring explanation 21 Sep 2008 (Forum)
However, when looking at the wiring I couldn't see a connection to the dial and wanted to describe my wiring and see if its typically "french" or a hack-job by a previous owner... From the alternator (or is it the starter motor) I have red and black wires running to a relay (split charge relay?) taped near the battery. Two more wires run from this into the bulkhead. From there I lose them, but running to the fan connector are two more red and black wires with two cut wires spliced into them, a blue one and a light brown one. -
Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 93 1.6 Immobiliser saga 17 Sep 2008 (Forum)
With that out, the car will start, and the alarm led glows continuously to tell plod the car has been stolen. You can drive the car like that, everything works in the running gear. But the oil warning light glows faintly while the car is running. Just in case anyone knows, is that faint glow a sign of trouble storing itself up? Is something burning out? Might the battery go flat?
