Car by Car Breakdown 27 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Is it that the qualities of each of these cars outweighs their faults? Or are the faults in reality limited to a small number of cars, with general reliability being pretty good? Due to experiences in my Dad\'s old Renaults and Citroens as a kid, I have a phobia about unreliable cars. -
Chrysler Grand Voyager 2000 2.5td - electrical faults and loss of power above 2000rpm 20 Mar 2017 (Forum)
(probably a fuse, I hope) The interior lights don't come on with the drivers door, all other doors work fine and the other electrical components of the drivers door work ok. So, thats it. Bring on the comments, I'm a big boy (an old fool more like) and can take it, although I do hope some will offer sensible advice, and no I won't accept "scrap it" Perhaps I should also add that I have always driven old bangers (never been able to afford anything remotely new), and in fact my old 3.3 was probably the best car I have ever had, and sadly this diesel, despite being half the mileage doesn't even come close. -
Abs and handbrake light 10 Nov 2020 (Forum)
So my OH jacks him up at the weekend takes the drums off and replaces new shoes and spring kit as he noticed the clips on the old one were broke and thought this could have been making the noise. Anyone who has had the sheer joy of owning the old focuses will know that any job requires the good old trusty hammer, after much bashing to get the drum back on we figure we are good to go. -

Daihatsu Charade - Cambelt change / dealers implications on 5 yr old 16 Nov 2010 (Forum)
(I do not believe the dealer intentionally mislead me). I do feel I paid (slightly) over the top for the car but was 'sold' on the reliability of a small dealer and full 6 month warranty but I don't feel like spending more now. Have I got a case against the dealer who sold me the car. -

Have I got a case against the dealer who sold me the car. Indeed should I worry as the car has only done 25K and cambelts don't deteriorate with age (his argument, not mine). -

Ford Mondeo - disposing a scruffy, uninsured car that runs 17 Feb 2014 (Forum)
so if all goes to plan I will have a newer car soon. Only one insurance policy so the old one will have to be uninsured - I have off-road space for it. This also means I need to declare SORN on it to avoid trouble - this stuffs up a plan to keep it taxed and buy short-term insurance if anyone is interested. -
Citroen AX (1987 -1997) - 1989 1.1 RE, trouble with front brakes 16 Dec 2008 (Forum)
I wonder if anybody can give me some hints. Reliable old AX11 that always starts well and runs well. Has been a cheap car to run and not much has gone wrong. Recently when braking sharply the N/S front wheel seems to lock up but the car does not pull to N/S when applying the brakes. -
Should I buy what I want? 11 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Gonna be thirsty, and older than the above. Am I going to end up hating it? Any help or other suggestions (except for diesels or French cars) greatfully received. I'll be doing about 350-400 miles each week. The car must be reliable. -
Speeding (mostly excl cameras) Vol 45 21 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Sure I speed and TBH, would have been travelling close to 40 if I had my old C class. There must be a sligh error in the speedo reading and let's asy i was doing 33mph - is the old, unwritten rule for good weather and clear road rquation out of the window, ie: Speed of car travelling = 30mph + 10% + 2mph = no endosement? -
Any water cooled engine - Is Old Coolant better or worse than water? 6 Dec 2016 (Forum)
Of course there's no need for anti-freeze here, but I'd think there'd be a risk of long term corrosion damage. If I had an unfixable leak on a truly disposable car I might put a pinch of washing machine powder in it from time to time, but its hard for me to regard a shiny 10-year old Skoda as quite that disposable, even though that's as old as Taiwan cars usually get. -
Peugeot 5008 - Peugeot 5008 or Ford S-Max 20 Aug 2017 (Forum)
On my budget I can get a 5008 that's 2-3 years younger than an smax and about 20-30k miles less. I'm hoping to keep the car for about 5 years. An smax would then be 10years old and a 5008 would be 7 or 8 years old. Based on this I've researched that the 5008 would be worth about £1k more than the smax in 5 years too. -
Mazda 3 TS2 1.6 D - Conrod through Engine 15 Jan 2014 (Forum)
My TS2 1.6 diesel had a conrod go through the engine in Dec 13. The car was 3 years old in Mar 13. It has been serviced by Mazda each year but not inline with the Mazda mileages specified (Jan 11 with 10,061, Feb 12 with 24,416 and Mar 13 with 47,754). The car has been inspected by Magna Mazda in Salisbury and it needs a new engine, vacuum pump and turbo charger. -
Complexity of Modern Cars 10 Dec 2012 (Forum)
Todays cars are very unlikely to ever become classics & most by the time they are 6-7 years old are not worth a light. Worst investment you can make? -
Renault Clio II - Compensation/Repair 7 Mar 2011 (Forum)
Do i have the right to get the car fixed and they try and get the money back after? The garage that i brought it from want me to call them back after they have spoken to Trading Standards (who they say will agree with them and that i should expect what i get when i buy a 10 year old car). -
car damaged in own drive! 7 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Hi. Yesterday my neighbour crashed her car into mine while it was parked on my half of a a large shared drive. She accepts full responsability but the problem is that my car is an 18 year old Mercedes. Yes, I know its old but it is in,until now, pristine condition with no rust and runs better, smoother and quieter than most other modern cars I've been in and i've looked after it for the last ten years. -
In the market for new car - please help 2 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Hi everyone. First time post here so be gentle. Also bear in mind I am not too "up" on cars - that said, I still prefer to have a decent driving experience and not just any old banger. I passed my test two years ago and my first car which I still have now is a 3 door 1.4 Corsa B (1998, S Reg) I have a lot of family and am now looking into an equivalent 5 door, alhough not too sure I like the 5 door Corsas (new or old style). -
what I should have done New lexusIS 11 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Advise them that if extensive repair work will be required to rectify the faults you reserve the right to reject the car. 4. Don't be fobbed off with any old date to fix the faults..the dealers know that the longer you have the car the weaker your ability to reject it. Keep the use down to a minimum if you suspect a major repair could be required. 5. -
Driving Other Cars, Insurance Q 21 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Insurance renewal time for me and I was wondering if anyone here can help me with some specific information, should they have it? I am 24yrs old, when I took out my current years insurance I was 23. I am with Budget but my current policy is underwritten by Inter Hannova. I currently have the 'drive other cars' extension on my policy. It was a bit of a surprise when I got this facility from Budget being under 25 and all, but it is very useful thing to have-share the driving with a mate on a trip out, borrow a family car to nip to the shops, take the old man's Cooper S out for a spin etc.
