Separate handbrake shoes/drums 25 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Just pondering about the lack of use of things, and i thought of those cars that have separate handbrakes with shoes, usually inside the rear discs, MB's and BM's and Volvo's notably but there are others too. Do those with such systems apply the handbrake gently now and again whilst moving to clean the rust and muck build up off the drum, or does the constant use of the handbrake stop the build up enough? -
Thursday night Motorway Cops [Read only] 28 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Were any members of the public shown on this item asked if they objected to being broadcast, and if not, how can the police justify this apparent hypocrisy? Both the saloon and estate Volvos appeared to have an area on top of the centre of the dashboard covered in black cloth stuck down with tape. Is this covering something Joe Public shouldn't know about, or is there a simple explanation? -
Another what banger :-) 11 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I know, moon on a stick but it is always worth asking if anyone knows of anything suitable! I am assuming old slab sided volvo estates are big enough. Is the primera estate big enough as that would be our first choice? -

Ideal car for Taxi 16 Aug 2007 (Forum)
I've been doing pizza deliveries for over 3 years as a part time driver so I know my way round. Would it be worth me selling my Volvo and buying a car that'll be less than 5 years old or just drive one of the taxi firm's cars? I would love to hear from you guys and in particular from any taxi or ex-taxi driver. Thanks -
A new menace on the roads. 25 May 2007 (Forum)
They look like multiple fog lights to me and are far brighter than they need to be. I don't know if they are day-running lights like the Volvos, but every Audi S6/RS6 I have seen so far has then on. But perhaps it is just the owners showing off in that usual German 'prestige' car way. They are a pain, and are bound to become more widespread. -
2-litre Laguna auto freebie 5 Jul 2006 (Forum)
SiL's Volvo 340 has burst its radiator, and a rich friend with lots of motors has offered him a 94 2-litre Laguna automatic for nothing. The car is said to be in good condition and has a new autobox less than a year old. -
Cam belt record? 24 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Like most people here I am careful not to exceed cambelt age or mileage limits, for example changing my wife's 306 1.8 belt on buying the car at only 15k miles because it was already eight years old. However, a quick check with Dad confirms that my Mother's Volvo 440 GLi with Renault 1.7 lump, owned by her since new in 1989 is still on its original cambelt 80k miles and sixteen and a half years later ! Recommended change interval is 40k miles or 5 years. -
How clear is your dashboard (%age) 9 Feb 2006 (Forum)
(40 marks) Controls, switches, stalks etc - overall design and style impression. Are they good to look at? (10 marks) Volvo S80 - 90 -- Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive? -
Why do the police get away with it! 27 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Monday evening, the M6, Cheshire. Everyone slows down as a Volvo police car comes onto the motorway. It pulls onto the outside lane and accelerates. I follow at a discreet distance. 80, 85, 90, 95 mph... no lights, no siren. Up to 100mph, all the way from Thelwall to Knutsford Services. -
used car safety ratings 2 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Newer cars are better than old, bigger better than smaller. In the luxury category I noticed that the Volvo S70/V70 didn't score as well as the 700/900 which is an older design. The BMW E34 didn't do as well as either. In the small cars the pre 98 Astras got a much better rating than the post 98 ones. -
Cat n Fiddle Road on TV last week 22 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Hi, Did anyone see the Police prog on the Traffic Police on the Cat n Fiddle Rd in the Peaks last week? The Gum chewing, Volvo driving, arms in body warmer, traffic cop booked the biker - who appeared to be in control, but over the double white lines, but let off the car driver {Lotus Elise?}who lost it on bend, due to excess speed and was also over the double white lines and out of control. -
recommended large estate ? 28 Nov 2004 (Forum)
My brother has a passat which is big enough but I find it uncomfortable, plus I hear a lot of horror stories, and Im not too impressed with the quality of my current A4 What should I go looking at ? Is the volvo v70 a decent size ? many thanks Mark -
exceptional service or not? 16 Sep 2004 (Forum)
Slightly stunned and fully expecting to be told this would cost £50 plus VAT I enquired what the charge would be and the reply "Nothing sir, all part of the service". In all the years I had my Volvo serviced by the local main dealer about 2 miles away they never once offered to do this so, is this quality of service normal or is the dealer acting above and beyond the call of duty? -
Goodyear F1 VS Pirelli 6000 3 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Hi, My Pirelli 6000's have done nearly 40K miles on my Volvo S60 D5 and they are due for replacement. I'm generally happy with the tyres but I remember reading a good report about the Goodyear F1. It would be nice to have a bit more grip, but I don't want excessively soft compounds, increased road noise and a harsh ride. -
Correct way to start any car 24 May 2004 (Forum)
Hi Guys I was having a conversation last night with a mate of mine who was a senior mechanic for Volvo for many years. We got round to the correct procedure to start a car and I mentioned that whenever I start my car I always push the clutch to the floor before turning the key(whether it's in neutral or not) and then I release the pedal when the engine has fired. -
Nice Sensible Reliable Boring 5 Mar 2004 (Forum)
They currently have a Nissan Primera 1.8 X reg which they've had for about a year and find a bit too big. Previously they've had Volvos (340, 440) which were fine, if a little "tank"y. Requirements: £5-6k About a 1.8, petrol or diesel Image - don't care 15-20k countryside miles per year Reliable Bit smaller than Primera but no smaller than Focus Also, how best to sell the Nissan? -
Mud Flaps 17 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I got them fitted on my V70, and there is so little ground clearance that road calming bumps, going over the drive lip etc. that each time I get a horrible scraping noise, front and rear. It strikes me as a bad design. Does anyone else have any views on Mud Flaps, or Volvo's implementation of them? cheers Durelli - son of a famous Italian tyre maker -
Best Tow Car ? 6 Jan 2004 (Forum)

A sobering thought 26 Nov 2003 (Forum)
I was e-mailed the following link (slow server, takes a few seconds to load), which is a pretty impressive testimony to Volvo S80 safety devices. Judging by the location of the wreck - on an exhibition plinth by the look of it - others would agree. Scrolling down the pictures, every single safety device has been used, from bags, to curtains, to crumple zones, to SIPS and so on.
